@@supertouring1 Labor salaries in the UK were low at the time for one simple reason .... factories and farms were allowed to use children as young as 9 years old. Being that the average adult's life expectancy then was less than half of what it is now, the orphanages were overpopulated with children. So, when they reached 9 years old, they were regularly transferred to "workhouses" (read: sweatshops) whereupon the factories would then provide food, boarding, and SOME education until the child reached adulthood. Because of these child laborers, UK's textile industry boomed using cotton picked and processed by black slaves in the southern American states. Many of these textile factories were powered by by streams and rivers and thus these factories existed all over the UK and their finished goods were initially transported via barges and later by train to the coastal towns for sale and/or export. Because the largest of these factories were deep within the UK, the abuses of child labor went mostly unnoticed until the Factory Act of 1833 was passed. Prior to this Act, there was no minimum age limit. The Act mandated that children aged 9 to 13 were restricted to a maximum of 8 hours of work per day and children aged 13 to 18 were restricted to a maximum of 12 hours per day. And thus it remained until the Factory Act of 1844 which limited children aged 13 to 18 to "only" 10 hours of work per day. Lucky them!

Inspired by "Jane Eyre", manifestly (the motif, of the wealthy gentleman man, of the poor governess and of "the bothering mad / paralyzed wife"). This is what made me slightly uncomfortable : for me, in that perspective, the movie is a kind of missed opportunity whereas, with the basic elements of the storyline, there was a real possibility to produce a captivating story and a cinematographic work in its own right. On another hand, I'm a bit embarrassed by the fact that the main theme is that of surrogate mothers and by the introduction of the question of euthanasia : these two topics may be as old as the world, but the fact that we discuss them openly, as societal subjects, is quite contemporary in my opinion. That's why I don't think it was absolutely relevant (even a bit intellectualy dishonest, if I'm severe) to insert them in a story that takes place in the XIXth century : in this time, it's much more likely that these problems remained unspoken and puted aside in a way or another ...
The other day I was thinking about how both my older kids used to enjoy school, and how my youngest hated going to school. Then I started thinking, the crazies that followed me were also following him. So if they were visiting him in school (the innocence of a child might have disturbed him too, having this stranger come and coach him to betray his mom), so perhaps he didn't want that feeling and therefore didn't want to go to school to avoid the crazies. 🤷 It probably felt like someone molesting him, telling him "Don't tell your mother anything about what goes on between us." ☹️🤷 So not only have I suffered mentally, but poor Joseph must have suffered greatly too, and that is why I had so much trouble with him and not liking school. But whatever, yes the past is the past and when I stand before God I will still be able to claim my innocence too, in such a wicked oppressive manipulative game.
They have accused the husband that he killed his wife by opening the windo, but the governess will discover that the woman could walk as her bottom of her legs were dirty. Which means that she was walking and how come her physican couldn't know about it. They have closed the matter.... His father dies with hefty amount of debts which caused them to sell everything to cover the Debts.
