Gosh you'd never think improv could get harder until you realise something like this exists. This is like improv on crack and steroids combined. The sheer amount of talent this takes
The craziest thing is that Jess and Zach do this often in their podcast, and I just finished watching their improv musical where they played 7-8 different characters with growth and development, coherent plot and all this based on a random word from the audience. I admire them so much!
I love how they create on accident some amazing lyrics that are so meaningful and relatable like “there’s too much choice, so you choose none and limit your voice”

I must say, as much as I love this show, I don't think the "shorts" really capture what makes it so good. It isn't just funny songs made up on the spot, it's the way they take the littlest thing from the beginning, and build on it until it takes over the whole show. They took a flub about being 1/2 man, 1/2 centaur (i.e. 2/3 man, and 1/3 horse) and just ran with it. Even the little callbacks in the finale about the principal and the pizza pockets get their due. It's all wonderful! Glad more people get to see this now
@Sverre Vd Z oh i thought they showcased that skill off in the game changer episode about mount sea port musical. I'm pretty sure that's added in post. They're adding multi-layered Brian May-style guitar lines, as well as synth strings. The shot of the band several seconds later shows the guitar player doing something else. That's not a knock on the band. They're good. 31:15 Jess realises that Ross was going to say 'work of art' a few moments before he says it because of the rhyme, and starts laughing. My favourite part. I like that he used that moment to tie in the earlier characters as representations of his friends.
I also love how Ross corrected the other's facts. Of course, he did the port-starboard thing, but in Michelangelo's song, Jess implied that Italy was on the Aegean Sea, when she meant the Adriatic. But in the callback, Ross sung about the Aegean in relation to Zac's Greek character!

Totally agree, it's probably my most-rewatched ep with Humpty Dumpty a close second. Everyone gets their moment, songs are all bangers, but there's enough improvised silliness to keep it fresh.

@@thepudgyninjaAgreed; while part of the charm of improv is that it's a little rough around the edges, this show has a noticeable newness to it. I'm willing to watch through any stumbling because there's a lot of potential here. & like GameChanger, the unpredictability is one of its strongest components

Okay I think this alone is gonna make me get into musicals, although I guess there won't be a song in any of them where they name drop as many streaming services as possible. So they can only be so much better than this.
But, well, there is a musical with a song where they list as many colors as possible. >:D It's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, if your interested. xD Other, I would also recommend Starkid shows, their all on TH-cam for free^^
idk if ur looking for specific musical reccs, but the movie adaption of the horror comedy musical little shop of horrors is up for free here on yt, its fuckin amazing :D
jumping on the musical rec train - as someone else said Starkid ABSOLUTELY has the same exact vibes as this. would also recommend Something Rotten, it's a ridiculous comedy about a guy during the Renaissance who invents the musical to spite his worst enemy, Shakespeare. it involves a song about the plague. also tap-dancing eggs
Game changer really has changed the game of content making it really lets their writers go through unique ideas and expand on the ones that people really enjoy like this and “Make some noise”. Its not just seasons of wheel of fortune or the price is right
I love how their improv is so good that this has a better plot and deeper connections and messages than actually planned, written, and rehearsed musicals. This is amazing
This episode had some of the best bangers including streaming services, change of gears, and rear view mirror. Humpty Dumpty and Space Rocks come close though. And I did like Muck of Murkmere
I knew this was going to be good the moment Jess decided to switch back to the tv character and beckon Brendan to stay inside. The way Zeke immediately caught on just from her slight accent on “Oh Brendan” was phenomenal
When Jess jumped in during the Gogu ride segment as a totally static wild animal bearing their claws and teeth, my first thought was that they were driving through a Rainforest Cafe
32:57 i love this line. not only is it a reference to "stay in and stream", but it also seems to bring the message of going with the flow, while also being a callback to zeke using boat terms to describe the car in "a change of gears".
This is an absolute DREAM cast for this show! Ross and Zeke are consistently my favorite guests on Offbook (Zach and Jess' podcast if you aren't in the know) and to see all 4 of them together is true bliss!
This. It was this exact reason why when this episode started my hopes skyrocketed, then I got spooked MountPort's musical was just a fluke. But nope. This episode was another homerun! (Hoping for another episode with this cast next season 🤞🏼🤞🏼)
I've been on this series since the first trailer, and Solving Personal Problems By Dinnertime is by far one of my favorite things to ever come out of this show.
why is nobody talking about the "fish out of water/bird out in the air" line tying in the introduction of the song. So brilliant! edit: and the aegean sea!! ross is so good at bringing back the references
Why was this actually so impactful to me... the ending song about his friends being not as difficult to reach out to as he originally thought. I really relate to this 🥺❤️ awesome choice for the TH-cam Upload
I was fully expecting Jess to go with Amelia Earhart (on the list of historical missing females she ranks pretty high) and burst out laughing when she went with Michelangelo…and then jaw-dropped with that amazing song.
Finding out that Zach and Jess got their own show on droupout honestly makes the subscription worth it. Only 5 minutes in and absolutely floored by how good that group number was. So excited to hear the rest but it’s so impressive to create such a good song right on the spot like wtf. This is god tier improv

Okay I think this alone is gonna make me get into musicals, although I guess there won't be a song in any of them where they name drop as many streaming services as possible. So they can only be so much better than this.
If your interested, try starkid stuff first
@@colourjumper6178 I was just going to suggest that same thing
But, well, there is a musical with a song where they list as many colors as possible. >:D
It's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, if your interested. xD
Other, I would also recommend Starkid shows, their all on TH-cam for free^^
idk if ur looking for specific musical reccs, but the movie adaption of the horror comedy musical little shop of horrors is up for free here on yt, its fuckin amazing :D
jumping on the musical rec train - as someone else said Starkid ABSOLUTELY has the same exact vibes as this. would also recommend Something Rotten, it's a ridiculous comedy about a guy during the Renaissance who invents the musical to spite his worst enemy, Shakespeare. it involves a song about the plague. also tap-dancing eggs
17:36 I can just hear Brennan saying "Um, actually, that would be THREE-QUARTERS man"
This is truly 4 of the best performers at this incredibly niche genre of improv that I adore
This episode had some of the best bangers including streaming services, change of gears, and rear view mirror. Humpty Dumpty and Space Rocks come close though. And I did like Muck of Murkmere
Yes they're all so good 😂
I knew this was going to be good the moment Jess decided to switch back to the tv character and beckon Brendan to stay inside. The way Zeke immediately caught on just from her slight accent on “Oh Brendan” was phenomenal
THIS WAS SO AMAZING OH MY GOD THE FREAKIN TALENT THEY POSSESS
I'm so glad it's this one you pulled from behind the paywall. It's always my first one to show people this show!
When Jess jumped in during the Gogu ride segment as a totally static wild animal bearing their claws and teeth, my first thought was that they were driving through a Rainforest Cafe
The most horrifying vision
I love Zeke being on here, too! And Ross also shows up in the karaoke episode!
Setting up "rennaisance" with "chance" was simply genius
29:31 "dropouts not doing it cause you can watch as much as you want" was so funny my God
I've been on this series since the first trailer, and Solving Personal Problems By Dinnertime is by far one of my favorite things to ever come out of this show.
Jess McKenna if youre seeing this I love you and I'm a huge fan, I think youre incredibly cool and you were my favourite in tonights show
The Michelangelo song was low key inspirational
This might the most impressive things I've ever seen in improv and musical theatre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Watched this on dropout already, this is pure chaos in the best possible way!
Hilarious, I love this series. Glad they've confirmed a season 2.
why is nobody talking about the "fish out of water/bird out in the air" line tying in the introduction of the song. So brilliant!
edit: and the aegean sea!! ross is so good at bringing back the references
The three originals + The amazing lyric improv guy from the new season's karaoke episode. Love it
these four deserve a big platform like this
I never thought an improvised musical could give such good life lessons, but college humor continues to surprise me all the time.
It's just like the game changer musicals.
Love it
I was literally thinking yesterday how it would be interesting to see a whole improv musical series cause Jess always kills it. 😵
As a long time Off-Book fan, it's great to put a face to Dana and Brett! This show rocks! 😊😊
Thank you so so much for releasing this whole episode, this is such a wonderful gift!!!
i bought a dropout sub specifically for this series, i absolutely LOVE improv musicals
Why was this actually so impactful to me... the ending song about his friends being not as difficult to reach out to as he originally thought. I really relate to this 🥺❤️ awesome choice for the TH-cam Upload
Genuinely, it makes me incredibly happy to be here in this moment when I can watch these amazing people make absolute magic.
Props to the band for keeping it up!!!
I was fully expecting Jess to go with Amelia Earhart (on the list of historical missing females she ranks pretty high) and burst out laughing when she went with Michelangelo…and then jaw-dropped with that amazing song.
This was an amazing adventure.
The way everyone kept playing on each other, and everything was broight together at the end.
Genius. Bravo
Finding out that Zach and Jess got their own show on droupout honestly makes the subscription worth it. Game changers is so fun to watch, but Offbook The Improvised Musical Podcast has been a fav for YEARS. I’ve been begging for more visual contentment from them!! This is honestly a gift from the universe😭😭 THIS EPISODE WAS SOOOO GOOD
This is one of the best musicals I’ve ever watched I’m so lost for words at how good this is
Ok dropout I need so much more of this in my life please and thanks. 10/10 best $6 I’ve ever spent
when you think about it even if it might have some sort of direction behind it, this show is entirely improvised and perfectly coordinated by not one not two but SEVEN people (4 main 3 band and technically 8 if you include the host as well) this is so impressive im stunned
I cannot wait for season 2, best thing on Dropout to date
Only 5 minutes in and absolutely floored by how good that group number was. So excited to hear the rest but it’s so impressive to create such a good song right on the spot like wtf. This is god tier improv
I need a full album with all these songs, they all are brilliant!
Oh my god I was almost crying by the end of this. I have Dropout but totally missed it, gonna go watch the whole series! Huge props to the band & the cast, incredible work from everyone.
Its incredible how talented the syncronised the band and singers are. As a musician, that usually takes an amazing amount of luck or practice
I am subscribed to Dropout just for three shows: Gamechangers, dirty laundry and play it by ear
This show is so great. Absolutely worth the dropout subscription on its own.
I love that they chose to upload this one since this one is my favorite and im excited to share it with others!
JESS’S ENTIRE BEGINNING OF THE MICHELANGELO SONG. WOW. That was lyrical perfection WHILE BEING IMPROV.
That reference of the Off Book intro was unexpected but incredible
Wasn't predicting this, but I'm so excited
EDIT: This is one of the best shows I''ve ever seen
This was the most awesome thing ever. The talent of everyone is simply incredible. Glad I got to watch this, it made my day!
Watched it on Drop Out, watching it here and commenting for engagement! This deserves to pop off
i was having a hard time getting out of bed and doing anything but i finally did it and went to my piano and put this on to warm up and have been having so much fun playing with the cast (im definitely not doing anything musically coherent or talented like them lol) and i’ve been having so much fun so thank you
