In the Railway Series story of which this episode is based on, Thomas crashed into the stationmaster's house as a result of a siding ending on the road having no buffers to stop him, causing him to run off the rails and onto the road until he reached the house. This was not done in this adaptation due to the models heavily being powered by track, so the rails had to be led to the stationmaster's house. However, the Ladybird and Buzz Book adaptations of this episode uses the original Railway Series dialogue.
it actually kind of makes sense that the wife wasn't too concerned about the house, during this period, railway staff (particularly station masters and signalman) were usually provided with a railway cottage by the company, which would be located next to the station (a small rent was taken out of their wages), this was primarly so that these staff would be 'on call' 24/7... as such all the repairs would be dealt with by the company, you can tell this is a railway cottage by the way it matches the 2 buildings next to it... such cottages are very common, and many still exist (all be it no longer owned by the railway)
Reminds me of a event in Gladstone NJ. A Lackawanna MU car went through the end of track into the kitchen of a house just after the tracks. Thankfully everyone was in the dinning room at the time and they were waiting on something in the stove which well ended up having a iron and sandy taste once the wheels stopped on-top of it.

When I was little, I didn’t think much of this episode. Just liking the crash sequence but, after rewatching this as a 19 year old, I feel bad for Thomas. STH, Percy and Toby were a little harsh here. Don’t get me wrong, Thomas was cheeky about thinking he doesn’t need a driver but, experiences something traumatic. It’s not like he intentionally tried to cause harm but, STH scolds Thomas for something that was out of his control. And, I didn’t appreciate the fact that Percy and Toby were smiling when Thomas had gone through something that could’ve caused serious injuries to people (If this wasn’t a kid’s show) but, this is just a nitpick. I don’t hate this episode in any ways, it’s very comedic but, when you take away the children tv show aspect and compare to something that can happen in real life, you’d get a minor sense of annoyance.
