THE GHOST STREET OF WALES (CRESCENT STREET)

  • Join me as I venture down this abandoned street of South Wales that is now left awaiting demolition now that all the residents have sadly gone. Read below for more information on the street.
At first glance, it could be a row of terraced houses like any other in the valleys.
A stone’s throw from the site of the Merthyr Vale Colliery, some residents have their recycling out for collection, others have their curtain draws against the cold.
On closer inspection though, Crescent and Taff Street in Merthyr Vale are not like any normal terraced street.
Windows have been smashed and doors are boarded up where lights should be shining out against the rain.
Cracks are appearing in some of the walls, while through the gaping garden fences furniture can be seen left to stand the test of time against the elements.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council decided to carry out a compulsory purchase order to buy and demolish the two streets due to the risk of flooding from the River Taff flowing metres away.
At the meeting, it was said that of the 100-odd houses of the street, only six were left to be acquired by the council, with terms agreed for three of them. But for the handful of residents still on the street, the decision comes after a decade which has seen their neighbours slip away one by one.
Of those remaining, one of the figures still living on the street has been in his house since the age of two.
Once a lively street full of familiar faces, according to him the only movements outside his house now are the sounds of the petty burglars trying to get their hands on anything left. The resident, who did not want to be named, said: “People have started breaking into the empty houses and attics to pinch the boilers and anything of value.”
“They have picked everything off the street one by one. I’m about the last one to go.”According to him, the problem has recently become so bad the council have been forced to cover the drains with concrete slabs after the drain covers themselves also started to disappear.
He said: “It doesn’t affect us. We just keep our eyes open but we don’t take any notice.
“There’s about half a dozen of us but we look out for each other - you have to. For the resident, the council’s decision to demolish his home comes as the last stage in a long process which has seen officials slowly coax his neighbours out of the area.
He said: “It’s been going on for at least 10 years. We knew about it a long time ago as they were talking about it but no-one was ever told what they were going to do.
“At first the people that wanted to go did and the housing associations starting doing the same to move people from there and board the houses up.
“They have just picked people off willy-nilly and let it go down to a dump. It’s like living in the Bronx. He added: “I never wanted to leave here because this is my family home. My grandmother and my mother and father lived here so I’ve got a lot of memories.
“There were lovely people down here - everyone knew everyone and you could leave your door open and no-one would pinch anything.
“It was the same as a lot of other places but it was a great street with a lot of hard-working people.”
For this resident, like many others, the end of his time on the street is now in sight after recently buying another house not far away.
After staying in one place all his life the decision is not a welcome one - especially after claiming the river at the bottom of his garden has only flooded once in the last 20 years. He said: “We have flooded but we got flooded more than 20 years ago.
“It was our suspicion that the water board let the reservoir out as it was one huge rush as the water came down the street and flooded us right through.
“They came in a boat to take people out of there. He added: “When I was a young boy I remember water seeping in the floor but at the time it was flagstone and the water used to creep in.”
Instead, according to the Merthyr Vale resident, it is the unmanaged drains rather than the river that can create a problem.
He said: “At the end of the street the water comes out and it can’t go anywhere.
“The higher the river gets the more the street floods. It can be halfway up the wall, its about three or four foot.

It was a Brilliant place to live the taff last flooded 2008 and council wouldn't spend money on flood defence nobody wanted to move my mam and dad lived there for 46 yrs and my children loved it down there they slapped compulsory purchase orders on them and didn't even help many residents to find anywhere else to live . It is sad they were built for the miners and my dad was a miner bought his house in 1971 and had shit money on compulsory purchase

Lived in number 47 Crescent street, moved out in 2005, the council were sending letters even then about purchasing orders due to high risk of flooding
    Sad seeing it like this

The Teifi flooded last year, many people didn't have insurance or couldn't afford the high premiums. It was the worst for 30 years but the local community helped each other with the clean up, donations of furniture and food banks. It's sad to see that more wasn't done to help the residents in the Crescent.

No doubt the council had to evacuate the tenants because they wouldn’t be an insurance company that would re-insure these properties ever again, stupid really as the property would of been fine once dried out and cleaned and work carried out on them, there’s parts of Somerset that also have this problem now where floods have happened and you just can’t get insurance anymore for them. It’s a waste and a crying shame imo especially when there’s such a shortage of houses in an over populated island. Nice video though Wayne well done👍😉😉😉

Many times, when one watches an urban exploration, one can see how the property was cared for less and less until it was probably nearly uninhabitable, but the houses in these streets were lovely and cared for. Not long ago, it was obviously a community of nice people which is now just...empty and derelict. Your including the pics of the streets was excellent and added to the poignancy of the situation. I really feel for these people, these families.
Terrific video, Wayne. Thank you for posting it.

What a really sad place especially when you show the images from before, busy street, obviously close community. All those homes ruined and all the contaminants in the water damaging the walls and furniture, no insurer would touch them 😞 Thank you for sharing this once vibrant community 😊

They should add ask the government to help them rebuild like we do in our country in the Asia Pacific.
It's a beautiful site but , only the vandalism took over after that incident.

brill video, so sad for the people that lost their homes with all the happy/sad memories in the flood, one abandoned building is bad enough exploring cos you never what is in the next room but a full street must have been very spooky not knowing if anyone was going to walk in/out on you
