      At this point I apologize to anyone upset or offended by the effect reminiscent of the rising sun flag. I was notified about the possibility that that would be associated with regimes in Asian countries. It wasn't my intention and it shouldn't even be associated with any military flag. I'm a pacifist and would alter it if I was aware of this before. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag

    3:40 Try tacking the corner and inside corners first before welding the beam. Since aluminum isn't that strong compared to steel, it melts faster. That's why you got that hole at the end. Hope that helps even though this video was a year ago lol.

    One of the LEDs green channel seems to be failing at 8:37 in the upper left-ish corner, that's unfortunate. Sometimes the LEDs aren't soldered to the chip so well under the silicone...

  • @vonneagut
    @vonneagut 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Amazing work as usual. I absolutely love the final result. 🤩
    Might I suggest you switch from the ESP32 to a (ARM based) teensy since you can use this library called OctoWS2811 which can drive 8 strips on parallel. It can potential manage more than 200FPS in your 1200 LED frame. You will lose WiFi capabilities but that is easily added by putting a raspberry pi, which can get bitmaps over WiFi/Eth/local-storage and send bitmaps over USB to the teensy (at USB full-speed rate ~12Mbps). That library can even do multi-processor synchronization...
    I am actually finishing up the same thing right now but I mine is much smaller and hexagonal (at 331 LEDs). 😋

  • @DavesGarage
    @DavesGarage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Physically very nice! The refresh rate gets too low off a single lead. 1200 is too many off one WS2812B data lead for a good refresh rate. I split my matrices into no larger than 16x32 and dedicate an ESP32 pin to each. You can run up to 8x1024 pixels at a full 30fps, but you likely only need to split your into two. And it's all code, except for one additional wire.

      one of the guests at MakerFaire was talking to me about making a version with 800 x 600 or at least 640 x 480 LEDs. I've put on my best "bitch please" face.. you'd need a 144kW power supply for that (granted in full white all pixels).
      You've probably said that as a joke but it just reminded me of that guy. He had this "I can easily whip that up" smug mode on.. meh.

    • @ClokworkGremlin
      @ClokworkGremlin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 640x480, It would also be at least 19.2m (64 feet) tall, and have to be driven in 148 concurrent segments to maintain a frame rate of 24 frames/second (the max rate of the LEDs he's using allows about 50,000 pixel updates per second)

    • @AtomkeySinclair
      @AtomkeySinclair 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@wreckless_-jl6uu No doubt - it was just a thought for others that might want to construct a panel using another method. The pre-made stuff has the added quality of being very precise in the hole placement that might help in better alignment of the pongs. And you can also get it in material other than metal that would be cheaper than making it with metal and hand punched - plastics for instance. You could also use peg-board. You might have a little hole in-between the main fixture points, but it would be cheap and fast. 4X8 (foot) peg-board runs about $15 a sheet USD at the local hardware. Cheers.

    There's a cool product available from Adafruit called a FadeCandy. It can control 512 WS8212 type LEDs, and connects to a PC via USB. You can connect multiple FadeCandys to one PC. It's then really easy to interact with them via a Processing sketch, especially to do things like play video, animated GIFs etc.

      Let's say one RGB LED can draw a maximum of 60mA (20mA per color) at 5V. So you basically have to multiply that with the amount of RGB LEDs you have. For 144 LEDs on a one meter strip you should get a supply rated for at least 144 * 0.06A = 8.64A. It will probably work with less though, as you won't ever use full brightness white on all of the LEDs simultaneously.

    It would probably have taken a lot less time if you had just used pegboard for the front and regular wood for the sides and back (if a back is even necessary). Since the LEDs are bright and the backboard is dark, any unfilled holes in the pegboard that don't line up would more than likely be unnoticeable as long as there is no light coming through them.
