People's tastes have changed but I'm with you- I like people playing actual instruments writing their own songs. To your point candy rat is by musicians for musicians. Seems like they actually know how to listen for the art.
The middle solo part is just killer. Excellent use of wah as a tool of expression, rather than to hide lack of technical skill, which is seems so many use it for.
Your comment about the overuse of the wah pedal is spot on imo as so many guitarists use the wah pedal too much or get carried away with it because it does sound really cool if used in moderation but Kirk Hammett of Metallica as an example uses the wah pedal too much imo & i think uses it out of laziness sometimes & as i said it can cover up mistakes pretty good lol. One song though that i really like where Kirk Hammett uses the wah pedal for his solo in the song,”Bleeding Me” is awesome imo & is just ripping in that tune!
As great as this is, he didn't "start" anything. Joe Satriani has been doing stuff like this for years, and I'm sure he's not the only one. For an example from him, see "Day at the Beach (New Rays from an Ancient Sun)" from the"Flying in a Blue Dream " album. It's the same kind of tapping out the bass, rhythm, and melody type thing that Sammy is doing here.
