There's an Interview with Alicia Debnam-Carrey (Nikki) where she Talks about it and it's so interesting. They shot the movie in 18 days! And they had a couple of days before that in a workshop where they were all learning off each other, how they talked and moved, their energies etc. It really sounds like such a fun Job experience😂
I also think a huge part of that is how well the actors were able to really show you with their movement, energy and general vibe, what character they actually were at that moment. I feel like they did such an amazing job with that and if they didnt, the movie would have been so much more confusing
Probably my favourite hint to Forbe’s identity was how nice he was to Shelby, because she wasn’t at the party Beatrice obviously wouldn’t know who she was and wouldn’t actually hold resentment towards her. That’s why Shelby gets her body back at the end and gets off relatively scot free
That makes sense! When I watched I had no idea that was really Beatrice, so I thought that Forbes was in love with Shelby and was actively trying to break up Shelby and Cyrus so that he could be with her.
This is such a neat moment too, because on the first watch through, I assumed Forbes was being nice because Shelby was the one person he couldn't hold responsible for his sister's breakdown - so, same reasoning, but it makes even more sense when you get the Beatrice reveal!
The "Forbes had a temper" and then "Beatrice" screaming at the lady! I didn't catch onto that! Also i didnt realize the letter on the paper. That is so smart. Also the first round when Beatrice takes the money, i didn't connect the dots or the red light.
I liked the forshadowing of how forbes was described as having a temper in the flashback but then being extremely friendly and creepily calm in person. I did guess it wasn't really him fairly quickly, but I never even guessed it was Beatrice strangely.
This is funny because I guessed it was Beatrice early on but because so much was happening so fast in between, I had forgotten I guessed it for a sec. The reveal was still so fun though.
SPOILER: one thing that bothered me is that no one was actually sad for Brooke and Reuben dying. While Maya and Dennis were sad about loosing their bodies, no one mentioned anything about the other twos conscience/mind being gone forever.
I can kind of see that being justified by the fact that the people you'd expect to care most were preoccupied with their own stuff. The closest person to Brooke was Maya, and she was more worried about why this was the universe's way of punishing her for trying to cheat on her boyfriend and how this was effectively her being reborn. The closest people to Reuben were Cyrus and Dennis, and they're both selfish assholes, so they were only concerned about what those deaths meant for themselves.
They were all under the influence and not in their own bodies, I feel like they had to process a lot. Also, I don't think any of them actually liked each other.
@@j0j01192 I feel like it shows how little all of them really respected or liked either of them. They were completely willing to use them and violate them and discard them. Nikki just became a commodity when it was clear she was trying really hard to be taken seriously.
While I agree the whole consent thing just goes to show how bad everyone in the friend group is, I was a minority at a white suburban school and the way Nikki spoke to, around, and about POC brought back some vivid and unpleasant memories. She was racist, not in a hateful way but as someone too arrogant to really think of other people's issues as real. Which is why she stays racist despite having POC friends. You can't reason with people like that, they act all victimised and whinge about how they're one of the good ones. I think that's why Shelby (POC) had that outburst at Nikki near the end (Nikki says some wacky stuff about Brooke a few times that's racially charged).
My one critique is that I wished they brought back the "eyebrow stroke" tell between Cyrus and Shelby at the end, just to hammer home the point it was her and to show how much disdain she developed towards Cyrus
I actually like that they didn’t. It showed Shelby never truly wanted to do it (she was annoyed with Cyrus and just said she would do it to get him to be quiet). She proved it was her with her own way. It was kind of like she was separating that connection between them. “I won’t do what you want anymore” Since it showed in their relationship that she was more likely to bend to do what he wanted. Sorry if this did not make a whole lot of sense.
I’m glad they didn’t because it shows Shelby’s growth about not doing what Cyrus was telling her to do. Idk sometimes character growth is shown with what isn’t shown
YES i remember noticing the sounds because i went in blind and was worried that it’s a “people trapped in the machine” thing; but then of course forgot the whole thing by the end
Unfortunately it's a bit like Primer - great film, but way too much of a headf%&k to take it all in on the first 'go round'; but while easily good enough to bear a second viewing ( _four_ might be pushing it!), by then you're after spoiling it on yourself! It might actually have been no bad thing if I'd had this video to hand to refer to as and when necessary! "It's What's Inside" is a bit like one of those books that comes with a 'dramatis personae' at the beginning - while glad that the author has troubled to put one in to help 'slow readers' such as myself, one also groans inwardly with the feeling that "this is going to be like homework"! (Worth it though!) One nitpicky observation - though the film is brilliantly written, it might appear that the mind~swap machine is an obvious McGuffin; in truth, it's more than just a 'device' (no pun intended), its use really is central to the plot; in fact so much of the science fiction heavy lifting in the story depends on it that without it the film just becomes like a cross between one of those "College friends reunited" movies like 'St. Elmo's Fire' or 'The Big Chill', and one of those High School/College 'intrigues and recriminations' series such as '13 Reasons Why'... I can't quite tell if this is deliberate, those genres are certainly popular enough, or if, as I actually suspect, the film is trying to undermine those clichés and expectations; either way, between that and the central relationship drama, 'Forbes' didn't arrive a minute too soon, given that I was psyching myself up to chew off my own foot! As I say, this is just an observation, not a criticism; for me, they cut it tight, timing wise, with the deployment of the machine (if we leave to one side its appearance during the opening credits), but they get away with it! I think many people though will actually enjoy the setting up of the film's more interpersonal elements in their own right. Actually, while I realize such crass generalizations are these days rather frowned upon, even though I would recommend this film to anytone without hesitation, with "It's What's Inside"s well crafted characters and relationships, I think this might be one of those relatively unusual Sci~Fi films that might appeal more to a _female audience?_ Lastly, I feel I just _have to_ congratulate David W. Thompson, who plays the supposed 'Forbes' - or should that be, commiserate with?! I can just imagine the call to the casting agent - "Who have you got that just radiates 'Sleazoid Douchebag' from every pore?!" Right from the get~go the character is already operating on peak _"well_ dodgy" settings (it has to be said, in fairness, Thompson brings the face for the role!), but when it's Forbes' body channeling the _truly_ sleazy Cyrus (a man you _already_ wouldn't 'trust as far as you could throw him'!) the needles start peaking _dangerously_ into the red! Oh, and this really is last from me; the scene where Shelby - I _think_ Shelby - it's only been a few hours and already my head is hurting trying to parse it all(!) - threatens to burn down Nikki's career as an influencer had me howling! The way she nails that vapid social media culture (which so many of us are prisoners of) was comedy gold, far and away the funniest thing in the movie!
Warning SPOILER comment: I did a rewatch to try and pick up on some hints - one potential giveaway: I thought “Forbes” was acting weird when Cyrus first approached him (when he started venting about Shelby). If I recall correctly, Cyrus greeted him as “Game Boy” and Forbes seemed confused about this nickname. Not sure if that would be a nickname Beatrice was familiar with but I imagined it was a name only his college buddies referred to.
When Cyrus is trying to convince Shelby to play the game, "Forbes" and Maya are having a conversation at the same time, and we can hear bits of it throughout the scene. In it, "Forbes" expresses surprise at Maya having been to Hawaii and mentions something about Las Vegas. Both of these places are places Dennis promised Beatrice he'd take her to. Also, in the scene where Nikki smears peanut butter on Shelby's face, during all the red segments, Forbes is JUST out of frame, despite being in the same room as everyone else and everyone else being shown as who they actually are. This is because if they showed Forbes in the red scenes, we wouldn't see Forbes. We'd see Beatrice.
What clued to me of who forbes actually was when we first meet him at the part and hes practicing how to say "making paper" before everyone asks what hes been doing all this time. Their practicing how to the real forbes speaks
And later when the group asks how crazy Forbes wants to go, I guess because he used to, he just very weirdly and casually answers "yeah just making paper and traveling the world"
It's such a good twist all around. Even his mannerism in general had me kinda scratching my head like, "this is the guy they partied with in college? He's kind of odd, but okay"
This is a rare case of a movie mastering a sense of scope, of all things? Like, it feels so snug in its sense of scale, with just the right amount of implications and fantastical elements. So tight. I definitely think the editing helps
i could see the death coming from a mile away but it still fucked me up soooooo bad lmao ALSO i think these actors did such a crazy good job cause i was able to follow who was in what body basically the entire time
I literally stared at my TV with my mouth wide open when it happened😂 I was expecting someone to die but then it happened and I was so invested in the characters already that it felt like my body just died in front of me and I was cursed to stay in someone elses body myself😂 it was so trippy
The whole time I was just thinking of this scene I saw once of two people doing it and the guy bangs the girl too hard and she falls out the window. Like ledges are not the best places to have sex. 😂
I definitely got weird Forbes vibes from the beginning, but it really felt like he just had an elaborate plan to avenge his sister (like maybe what no one knew was that after that night she spiraled and ended up sewersliding). Like Promising Young Woman style revenge. It was so cool that they flipped this premise that has been done on its head!!!
I have literally never stopped a youtube video to go watch the thing. I saw the clips in the intro and was so hooked. I watched it and oh my god this is going to be a movie I watch over and over
my favorite part that i haven't seen anyone else notice is that during the first switch, when they're all looking in the mirror, Nikki is in Shelby's body and she looks SO HAPPY about it. like she's posing in the mirror and you can tell she thinks she's so pretty. which makes the whole jealousy thing so much more interesting to me.
During my second watch with a group of friends (their first watch) one actually guessed that Forbes was gay on his entrance scene. Their reasoning was that his smile seemed more feminine. When I tell you I wanted to laugh so hard BECAUSE (since this is my second watch) I already knew that was Beatrice in Forbes body. The actors do a great job portraying each other and each other’s inflictions. Forbes smile when he came in resembled Beatrice’s smile from the flashbacks.
I was rooting for Shelby until the 3rd act. By refusing to switch back when everyone wanted to she actively screwed everyone over and overall acted pretty psycho. Also Cyrus is pretty scummy but doesn’t deserve to be in jail for murders he didn’t commit. But I did LOVE this movie up until the ending
you´re not supposed to really root for anyone, everyone is a shitty person either by their own actions or by association. Despite Shelby´s only flaw was that she was insecure and jealous, the third act shows that she´s not above being petty, everyone sucks and that's why it's so good.
i find it funny that the quality that’s supposed to make cyrus look bad is that he isn’t sexually attracted to shelby. if the roles were reversed people would say that she shouldn’t have to have sex with cyrus because her body her choice, relationships are bigger than sex etc
I actually watched it without seeing the trailer first because of one of your tweets and I really liked it! But I have to admit that I forgot their names halfway through (and I wasn't even on my phone while watching, I was quite attentive!) and the whole thing became a little bit confusing but I caught on quickly. I can't blame the film, I think the editing makes what's happening as clear as possible and it's probably clearer when you watch it in a theatre and you're more "locked in" lmao. It might be a hard watch for a Netflix audience known for mindlessly scrolling as they watch, though!
the hardest part for me was when they referred to each other by name. I had the faces down and who was in what body but still can’t remember which one is Brooke lmao
I was pretty good with recognising people (especially Dennis cause whoever acted like him was always great and he was so extra) but I definitely paused a couple times to clarify to myself, I'm sure I sounded like a crazy person going "so that persons Niki, that guys Forbes and then etcetera etcetera" haha
A detail right at the begining that I noticed was Forbse says "The dungeon master cannot make guesses nor can she or he win". I thought it was really weird cause only Forbse would be the dungeon master in this game and it would be weird to start with she when referring to himself then guessed that he was probably actually his sister.
I think it’s even funnier, because even if it’s only Forbes, after the body swap, the dungeon master has to make guesses, otherwise they would give themselves up :)
no fr cause it was SO GOOD! the writing, the use of colors, the easter eggs, the whole entire plot, AND THE ACTORS BEING ABLE to act like completly different people all in one movie really testing there acting skills was great!
TY for mentioning the streaming distribution pros and cons. I definitely appreciate the ability to watch this from home, but at the same time, I know it won’t last as long as the stuff in theatres. Which is a shame, since this film would probably do very well with crowds. I do personally wish they had done more with the horror potential of this concept beyond what happened in the second act, but overall it was pretty solid for what it presented. And thanks personally for your review of this on the intercut podcast! The fact that you managed to hype it up so well without spoilers there is a real testament to your craft.
SPOILER I couldn't help but feel bad for Brooke even before the body switching. When she's passionately showing her art its a bit heartbreaking how Nikki comments on her single status 'despite her skills'. Maybe she was giving a compliment, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that she was secretly putting her down despite her own single status. That look of insecurity on Brooke's face explains why her and Shelby later on are paralleled in enjoying being in another's body to receive physical attention and thus what they think is gratification for themselves. While I wouldn't say Nikki deserved what she got, her self serving actions and lack of sincere caring for her friends contributed to the tragedy. If only she was a more self aware friend to Brooke, then maybe those deaths could of been avoided.
Absolute blast of a movie to rewatch, specifically focusing just on Forbes. The pep talk he gives himself when he first shows up makes you first just think he is a generic socially awkward nerd. The second time, well... 😅
My first clue was when they took the polaroids, Forbes' picture takes way longer to develop than the other pics. I wish i had noticed the lighting piece; what a neat way to show it!
I'm glad you reviewed it! I enjoyed the movie! Every character was annoying in some way (flaws) but we are annoying to someone. Its realistic to me, and I was so vindicated with the twist!
one of my favorite editing details was actually in the ending credits when they changed the character names to show who was also playing who in a different body. so fun
I suspected Forbes wasn't Forbes from the beginning because of the scene at the start (I knew this was a body swap movie going into it), but I didn't consider it was his sister. Also I just realised with the clip you showed of Nikki at the end that she got what she asked for too, she was talking about experiencing being a different ethnicity and such, now she's a guy.
Originally it was but the director thought it wasn't going because he realized it doesn't make sense there wasn't going to be any good reason for that person to go after the group and this would have changed Shelby's fuck you bitch moment to Nikki saying this to cyrus when he was in jail towards the end.@@theclairewhy
I suspected Beatrice was in Forbes, just because the whole thing reminded me of an old Fear Street book where a group of friends have a reunion after one of the girls’ little sister died the year before. They start being murdered one by one and the twist is the sister didn’t die, she just fell really far. She crawled up out of the pit and murdered her older sister and then invited all the friends back who were kind of responsible for her “death” by negligent/reckless behavior.
@@coolcoolcoolcoolnodoubt2590 The series is called "Fear Street" by RL Stine and I thiiiiink the particular book she's talking about is "The Surprise Party" but it also might be "Switched". The books were written in the late 80s/early 90s for middle school/high school kids so they're a bit juvenile (considering what adult authors/publishers back then thought were appealing to/appropriate for that age group) but some of them hold up reasonably well. Ditto with Christopher Pike's books aimed at the same demographic. As long as you're not expecting anything too deep - back then it was a rare exception to get much more than a surface level character arc, or dealing with real trauma. I mean, that's not to say that the death of a sibling isnt "real trauma" but it wasnt dealt with typically by the POV character. Future books like The Hunger Games & the ideas that kids could and would enjoy books about dealing with poverty, politics, war, death, and PTSD opened a lot of eyes.
I’m fascinated by this film’s story. It’s been a while since I was so immersed and engrossed by a film that I desperately want a sequel just to see what happens to the characters next. The last time anything similar happened to me was when I read NOS4A2 last summer, but that feels much more conclusive to me, so I don’t need a sequel to it. Back to the subject of this film. It’s AWESOME! The direction is wonderfully concise and communicative, the cinematography is beautiful and expressive, the acting and character work are varied and deep, the plot is wonderfully byzantine and interesting, and the themes are incredibly human and poignant. One other thing I really want to emphasize is the films usage of film as a medium. The framing, movement of the camera, and sound editing are actually used to convey the narrative, rather than the film settling for a static and uncreative style, and it really adds to the experience.
6:16 watched to this point thinking the editing and tone was great. When you mentioned the body swapper, I closed youtube and put the movie on. This was so fun! It almost reminded me of Everything Everywhere All at Once which was some of the most fun I've ever had at the movies. This was like Edgar Wright making his own version of Talk to Me with a dash of Bodies Bodies Bodies.
same here! my friend had also mentioned it, but i couldn't remember the title until Amanda said it in her previous video. it was fantastic timing, and i'm glad i watched it
This movie was really great and fun! I was trying to follow it so hard, you definitely shouldn’t be on your phone when watching it, should have been in theaters first.
I didn’t touch my phone at ALL (except to text my friend once that she should watch it). They keep making dumber and dumber movies, because we’re just going to be on our phone anyway, but when it’s an engaging movie, I actually put my phone down.
I liked that green was the color of highly emotional points in the movie. I am sure the colors have to do more with Brooke’s drawing at the beginning too, but I thought of how green is usually envy. Especially the green color they used in the movie. Since this movie was all about being other people. I think Brooke’s drawing had something to do with emotions when the green shade was used as well, but I forgot. Anyway, it was a fun movie and a good review!
The blue was sadness and sobriety which showed up after the death scene. I dont remember if it was elsewhere... that's the one Brooke used so you see the heart she drew.
I just finished the movie 3 minutes ago and came immediately here. This was a phenomenal breakdown, and you pointed out a TON of stuff I missed. Props.
Here are some details I noticed after watching the movie 3 times (SPOILER ALERT!) 1. In the first few scenes you can see the blanket moves up and down when Cyrus was watching Nikki's video. He was masturbating to her, not just to porn. 2. Brooke's drawing was about a girl with a broken heart. And when Nikki asked how come she didn't have a boyfriend, she glanced at Reuben 3. When Beatrice (disguised as Forbes) was standing alone in a room after first entering the house, she rehease her introduction 4. Beatrice hates Dennis the most, so she took Dennis's body in the first round. After that, Dennis told her Reuben was a snitch too, so she took Reuben's body in the second round. At this round, she sat next to Dennis (who was in Cyrus's body), she knew it was Dennis so she asked him if he thought he was a good person. 5. Beatrice yelled "it (the machine) is mine!" but when asked if she's even allowed to take it away from her team, she didn't know what to say 6. Dennis was dumb to have called the police and turn Cyrus in when he was still in Cyrus's body. But looking at the situation in his eyes, you can see that he'd just lost his body, and he was on edge with Cyrus at the time, so a person like him would do such a thing to get back at Cyrus. He couldn't think further than that. 7. Tied-up Beatrice gave the idea of testing Cyrus to Shelby because she also "didn't understand why liars (like Dennis and Reuben) get away with their lies" 8. Dennis doesn't want to be in Reuben's body because Reuben used his body the way he didn't want to. Also he is kinda racist (I guess), asking if he could say the N-word if he was in Reuben's body. He hates that Reuben only cares about his penis/sex stuff (which, well, seems understandable considering what Reuben did with Maya's body the day before his wedding day) 9. Shelby when visiting Cyrus in prison didn't do the secret signal because she was opposed to that idea in the first place. 10. It would be hard for Cyrus to prove himself innocent because his body (when Dennis was inside) has touched Dennis's body, first when Dennis was mourning for his dead body, second when Dennis was searching for his phone in the body's pockets. So Cyrus's fingerprint were right on Dennis's body, confirming the story that "Cyrus pushed Dennis". 11. Poor Sophia, she didn't know Reuben is actually dead. She thought the fleed and refused to marry her. Well if she knew the truth, him cheating on her and died tragically while he was doing it, maybe it'd even make her feel worse. Kudos to the writer-director for making such a tight script!
I mostly watch reviews of movies, rather than the movies themselves. This was one of the rare times I stopped the review a minute in and watched the movie first instead. Glad I did! Great movie, recommended it to others.
Something that I noticed alluding to Forbes actually being Beatrice was different characters practiced saying certain phrases in the mirror when they were pretending to be someone else. Shelby did while in the wig and while in Nikki’s body (hey there cutie) and Beatrice did it while in Forbes body (making paper).
I remember you mentioned the movie, and it was on my Netflix list, so I watched it days ago before getting the flu and I was immediately in love with the editing and direction. The foreshadowing for the use of the colours was so good. They could easily make a sequel but I don't think we need one necessarily. An open ending is just as good for this type of production.
Might work if it included Forbes and Beatrice and maybe like... idk dennis or Nikki? But then an entirely new group of people. Maybe the team who are experienced with it?
If it wasnt for this review of yours, I never would have watched the movie cause I thought it was horror! You totally sold me on it and I'm so glad I ended up watching, what a fun watch!
**starts to watch, realizes haven't seen it, stops and goes to watch immediately** I'll come back to finish the video, but liking so the suggestion isn't lost ^^
Well. That was definitely a ride. Adding to my recommendation list, and going to subject friends to it next time they stop over. I bet this was wild at the film festivals.
I don't think that would really be a punishment for him. Cyrus was obsessed with her body, so literally being in it can't be that bad. Plus, she's popular and attractive, he would just need to "out" Nikki as gay and he'd probably live his dream life
I would hate to do that to Nikki, like he would touch himself in that body so much and be really weird about it 🤢. Also, regardless about his feelings, it would be a "fresh start" to have a new body where he wouldn't need to grapple with the consequences of his actions in the same way. He could use his new life to run away from his problems and avoid properly acknowledging his role in everything. Something which he definitely would do, because in the end where he says he'll talk about marrying Shelby if she helps him out of jail, he is just as spineless as he's always been. The way it happened in the movie was perfect, because all the shit he did landed him alone. He doesn't get to pretend like the face he sees in the mirror every day isn't the one who messed things up with Shelby, because it's his body, and he doesn't get to project or push his problems onto other people. He has to shoulder it by himself, as himself.
I feel like Niki was really just chill and she got done dirty. She was my favorite character and a lot of the movie so many people was trying so hard to be her but Niki was one of the most tame characters just for her body to be stolen from her by Forbes psycho sister. She didn’t even do anything to Forbes sister at the party. She was the most desired character but dang poor girl would have to find a way to take that switch machine, hunt down Beatrice, like Forbes did, and trick her to switch back, but by then who knows what Beatrice did with her body or life.
LOVE this movie sm!! That scene where Cyrus kept ranting to Forbes about how his struggles in the relationship with Shelby and Forbes just stood there, smiling, not knowing what to say waiting for the conversation to end 😭it could NOT get any more real than that bahaha
Just came back from watching this!! As soon as you put in that flashback clip to show off the editing style I needed to see this movie in full and I am so glad I did!! I'm a sucker for mystery movies (huge Knives Out fan) and this completely delivered in so many ways while also being entertaining and fun to look at. While there were a ton of characters to keep track of, each one had an entirely different character trope going on, so I could always fall back on that while I was still learning names, and the reveal sequences with the red lighting were very helpful, while also being nicely forshadowed by Brooke's sketchbook. Out of everyone, I think my favorite characters had to be Maya and Shelby. Maya because the whole spiritual second life take was some refreshing comedy as things ramped up, and Shelby because I empathize with her feelings of inadequacy towards body image and social standing. Clearly she began hating her self image because of Cyrus (he can go fuck himself because she is gorgeous, but then again I guess he already was), and having the person with millions of instagram followers also be the person you know your partner is lusting after doesn't help. I'm glad she realized his bullshit and switched back into herself, because I DID NOT want them to stay together. Don't think Cyrus deserves jail time, but I'm glad she didn't go through with staying in Nikki's body, and her quoting him through the prison phone was great. (Also love that Maya spoke up in the mirror room. We stan girl supporting girls
Yes, this reminded me a lot of Glass Onion, mostly in the quirky aesthetic and playing with perspectives and keeping you guessing until the end and the fun characters who are awful but relatable. I actually saw Glass Onion first (because it was streaming on Netflix), and I loved it so much I immediately went to see the first Knives Out, and I honestly did not like it! Glass Onion was so fun and delicious, Knives Out felt so boring in comparison. Plus, Chris Evans' character was so obviously the "bad guy". Maybe I would have liked it better if I saw it first, I don't know. (I actually thought that maybe the two movies had a different director because the tone is so different between the two, but nope! Same guy!)
Spoiler pls do not read if you haven't watched the movie: Even though Nikki was shown to be a little bit scummy, she gets it so rough. Shes stuck not only in someone's body that isnt hers, having to live out her life while essentially having to take over someone's life - that body is also not the gender she indentifies with. Her body/life has also been hijacked by Beatrice so who knows if she'll ever catch up to her and be able to swap back. Beatrice knows how the machine works and would never voluntarily give Nikki her life back because of the misplaced anger she has towards her, so shed have to be knocked out first before making the swap.
Your comment made me think about if they did a Part 2 where Nikki (in Reuben) forces Forbes (in Beatrice) to go on a roadtrip to kidnap Beatrice (in Nikki) and do something to make them switch back. I’d watch that in a heartbeat.
@@peachreed it's not impossible, and I'd definitely be down to watch more shenanigans but I also wouldn't be upset if they did just let this be a one and done. The chemistry with this cast is just so damn good that anyone that tries after will have a very hard time matching or possibly even surpassing the original. I definitely think a disconnected group could be cool after it was suggested that jumping from body to body can be addictive but even so, this movie stands perfectly fine on its own
My only critique is that I feel like Cyrus’ punishment was a bit much. The fact Shelby wanted to stay in Nikki’s body made me not like her character even more. She could’ve just broke up with him 😭
Honestly, I felt bad for Cyrus. ***********SPOILERS BELOW***************** He wasn't the best but he didn't deserve the ending he got. Frankly, Dennis should have gotten more screwed over. Cyrus was dumb though. Frankly, the moment Dennis framed me with the cops, I would write off my body as an option until AFTER I had my name cleared.
I usually just watch your video then watch the movie if it interests me. For whatever reason, I watched the movie first this time, oh my God. It was incredible!! I will take your advice more from now on!!
I think what makes Nikki’s fate so disturbing is that she was the only one in the group who both had a body to return AND wanted to return to that body. And she final girled tf out of that 3rd act. And they don’t even show what happened to her after the switch - so eerie. Still makes me anxious a day after watching
Well, you got at least one person to pause and go watch it! Definitely one of the more unique movies I've seen, and I totally agree about the use of colors. It was definitely a visually appealing movie. I also agree about the flashback, memories can get hazy and the clashing of everyone's differing views and the snap-shot style the flashback uses was *chef's kiss*
I was literally watching this last night thinking too myself how much this feels like an Amanda Movie. I almost went to comment and ask you to review it.
I saw this movie raw on a whim and I was not disappointed! Good lord was it one of the best Netflix movies I've ever seen! The start of your video makes me want to watch it again!
The funny thing is from he introduced the machine and was adamant about it, I asked the people I was watching with “how do we even know this is Forbes, he is unhinged like I said before. Just look at him. That could be anyone in there. Maybe his “teammate” who needs to switch with someone or something!” They did an excellent job at making Forbes look off from the moment we saw him. And I never suspected his sister
I needed this review to clarify my own thoughts. Also also the “pump it up” headband on your shelf is everything. I need that review and breakdown as that movie changed me!
one hint is the very first scene of Forbes being asked to drink and he waves it off. technically, all we know so far is that Forbes was a smart RAGER who loved getting wild. I clocked his demeanor as pretty weird at first too-- where he seemed detached from everyone. it makes you think he's sinister and probably wants revenge based on what we know from the other characters. however, it also hints it's Beatrice masquerading b/c she doesn't seem quite right
Forbes not drinking after everything we'd heard about him definitely added to the "something's off" tone - I took it as something happened (like maybe something terrible had happened to his sister) that had sobered him up and/or he wanted to be on his game for whatever revenge he had planned for that evening. The twist is neat, because a lot of the hints are easy to dismiss as having alternative reasons
I finally watched one of these movies before watching your video (literally stopped the vid to go watch on Netflix) and I’m glad I did! I kinda expected more, but I still really enjoyed watching . Thanks Amanda!
I watched this last night because you mentioned you would make a video and I’m so happy I did. It was a lot of fun and watching your video showed me some little things I missed.
i wouldn't have known about this movie if it weren't for this video and i ended up loving it so thank you! everyone's talked about the immaculate lighting and cinematography but i also love the music. it adds so much quirkiness and chaos and it carries the mystery and tension so much that when you show clips of it in this video, i just wanted the clip to keep going. nice surprise of a movie! had a blast seeing it with my family
i feel like the "unique" editing/ storytelling style you've called out is in fact somewhat if not directly taking inspiration from media such as how i met your mother, its just unusual to see it in a thriller context.
You've been talking so much about this movie in your previous videos that I decided to watch it before watching this video. It was so great! I guessed the Coda plot twist very quickly but then discarded it thinking they weren't going to go there. I'm glad they did. The actors were all phenomenal and the editing was impeccable!
I'm not normally a fan of comedies, but this toed the line of thriller/dark comedy so well! Enjoyed it so much more than I expected, thank you for promoting it more than Netflix. ❤ the only scene i hated was when the whole room was spinning, just made me dizzy lol. Loved the editing, the music, the splitscreens. Just super stylish but still serving the story.
I really enjoyed this film! Spoiler warning (for my one critique): I felt like the movie ended by siding with Shelby, even though she let Cyrus be imprisoned for something he did not do which absolutely eclipsed the awful, awful things he did to her. That message it conveys at the end just really gave me a bad taste in the mouth. She was a villain too, and the movie should not have treated her final actions as triumphant. PS Beatrix was the GOAT
Wow, really enjoyed you and the fresh and real human being you are. No fauxness here! I watched this movie when you suggested, and came back for the review. Thanks!
I’m so happy my sister sent me your page. I feel like I finally understand the second half of this movie. Your editing style really helped. Also, The way you look at everything, be like me & it’s hilariously Validating. Fingers crossed you review, “The Substance”
thanks for the tip, amanda. you are one of my most trusted movie critics, so when i watched your video and you said that this was one of your favorite movies of the year, i have immediately stopped the video and watched the film instead to avoid any possible spoilers since i try to check out films as "cold" as possible. boh oh boy, this one did not disappoint. for sure one of the 5 best films of the year. what a ride.
I never would have given this movie the time of day until you recommended it. Now it’s one of my favorite movies of the year. I can’t thank you enough ❤
I usually watch your movie reviews and *then* decide whether I want to watch said movie knowing what happens in it. But with this one I had to pause the video before you got into spoilers and watch the movie immidiately, and I'm so happy I did! I had a lot of fun with it! You mentioned a ton of details I never noticed (like the red light thing) and I kinda want to go watch it again for that reason. Thanks for the recommendation!
NO ONE SAY ANYTHING about the fact that I have a Patreon and that’s the butt of a joke 😇
You said butt.

Anything
Girl you were right that movie was f#$ing dope.Solid 8 out of 10. Now I can watch your review.

I really liked the red light/real person asthetic, never even realized that Forbes wasn't shown that way until the end. Very well executed.
Yea you can see Beatrice for a while in the back when they were arguing about the peanut butter
WAIT WHAAAAT I HAVE TO REWATCH?!!
@BradK28 I can’t wait to rewatch it and notice all these details. THIS is how you lay out a twist ending!!
God the actors must have been going insane trying to replicate 5 or 6 different characters and each others versions of those characters. MAD props.
It was impressive to watch!! They had to have had a lot of studying and practicing to do!
@@melinaalba63 18 DAYS!?
@@AngelofGrace96 yeah if I remember correctly😅 around like 8min 40sec
@@AngelofGrace96 I just checked the Interview again, it was, in fact, 18 days😂 She says it in her "CherryPicks" interview
This is the first "confusing" movie that didn't have me completely lost at the end.
I think they did a really good job trying to re-center things when it mattered
I also think a huge part of that is how well the actors were able to really show you with their movement, energy and general vibe, what character they actually were at that moment. I feel like they did such an amazing job with that and if they didnt, the movie would have been so much more confusing
The red overlay that showed who it was on the inside helped a ton.
I been confused from the first min
i just know they were seething the title bodies bodies bodies was taken
Nikki also understands how hard it is to get a podcast together
I thought the same thing 😂
Also a much better movie lol
@BradsPitts Way better! This is the movie bodies bodies bodies wanted to be.
@@mollygrace3068 ugh I wish, maybe I would have liked it then
And the way Shelby can “see” Cyrus in Forbes when he talks, and Cyrus is confused when she tells him that! He doesn’t see her in the same way
Probably my favourite hint to Forbe’s identity was how nice he was to Shelby, because she wasn’t at the party Beatrice obviously wouldn’t know who she was and wouldn’t actually hold resentment towards her.
Props to the movie for making literally every character annoying
Brooke innocent
these were the most insufferable characters I've watched this year lol
Huge crush on Brooke 🙂↕️
@@AmandaTheJedi Except for hooking up with Reuben the night before his wedding (though that's on him) and both of them dying.
Lol. Yup
SPOILER:
one thing that bothered me is that no one was actually sad for Brooke and Reuben dying.
Yea thats because they are a group of fake friends.
i would say that’s because there was no time to mourn them dying because everyone was to focused on their own body.
They were all under the influence and not in their own bodies, I feel like they had to process a lot. Also, I don't think any of them actually liked each other.
@ryantalley5284 who was Mayas boyfriend?
I do feel bad for Real!Forbes. Dude legit tried to bond with his sister in a way that actually seemed meaningful if maybe misguided.
Forbes and Nikki made me feel bad. That girl got touched, groped, and passed around like a bag of chips.
@@j0j01192 Forbes and Nikki's (Dennis too) bodies got used for sex without their acknowledgement and that feels very icky for me.
@@bl00dvv1tch3 100% nasty behavior. I need them to get their body back… poor Dennis is screwed.
I thought she was gonna do the eyebrow thing!
Im glad they didn’t do that so not every setup had a pay off and added more red herrings to distract yourself
She did it her own way by directly quoting back to him what he told her she should say to her dentist 😅😂
I’m glad they didn’t because it shows Shelby’s growth about not doing what Cyrus was telling her to do. Idk sometimes character growth is shown with what isn’t shown
In the opening you can also hear the yelling and thud when she hits Forbes to steal the machine.
YES
i remember noticing the sounds because i went in blind and was worried that it’s a “people trapped in the machine” thing; but then of course forgot the whole thing by the end
I was scrolling so's I didn't duplicate a "Unintelligible Convo" Comment 🤘🏽💜
You can actually see Beatrice hitting Forbes on the reflections of the buttons of the machine too

Out here rewinding, taking notes, and circling names like this movie is going to be on an exam.
Isn’t it FUN
Dang, I used to do this until I made myself tired and then stop doing that completely 😂

Could you send me that diagram I'm holding on f or dear life
Unfortunately it's a bit like Primer - great film, but way too much of a headf%&k to take it all in on the first 'go round'; but while easily good enough to bear a second viewing ( _four_ might be pushing it!), by then you're after spoiling it on yourself!
(Worth it though!)
One nitpicky observation - though the film is brilliantly written, it might appear that the mind~swap machine is an obvious McGuffin; in truth, it's more than just a 'device' (no pun intended), its use really is central to the plot; in fact so much of the science fiction heavy lifting in the story depends on it that without it the film just becomes like a cross between one of those "College friends reunited" movies like 'St. Actually, while I realize such crass generalizations are these days rather frowned upon, even though I would recommend this film to anytone without hesitation, with "It's What's Inside"s well crafted characters and relationships, I think this might be one of those relatively unusual Sci~Fi films that might appeal more to a _female audience?_
Lastly, I feel I just _have to_ congratulate David W.
Warning SPOILER comment:
I did a rewatch to try and pick up on some hints - one potential giveaway: I thought “Forbes” was acting weird when Cyrus first approached him (when he started venting about Shelby). If I recall correctly, Cyrus greeted him as “Game Boy” and Forbes seemed confused about this nickname. Not sure if that would be a nickname Beatrice was familiar with but I imagined it was a name only his college buddies referred to.
Good call! Also forgot to mention that he was rehearsing his intro when Cyrus went up to him
When Cyrus is trying to convince Shelby to play the game, "Forbes" and Maya are having a conversation at the same time, and we can hear bits of it throughout the scene.
@@ryantalley5284There was a glimpse of Beatrice during the peanut butter scene right before the camera pans to Nikki.
@@bl00dvv1tch3 you mean as she's explaining she's allergic to peanuts? I'm gonna turn it on now to see if I see it.
@@bl00dvv1tch3 holy shit, you can. I've watched this movie maybe six times now and I've never seen that. Great eye.
What clued to me of who forbes actually was when we first meet him at the part and hes practicing how to say "making paper" before everyone asks what hes been doing all this time. Their practicing how to the real forbes speaks
Yes! I actually didn't comment on it because of how early it happens in the movie then forgot to mention it again at the end thank you!
And later when the group asks how crazy Forbes wants to go, I guess because he used to, he just very weirdly and casually answers "yeah just making paper and traveling the world"
He also declined to smoke when offered . Weird considering he’s a huge partier
It's such a good twist all around. Even his mannerism in general had me kinda scratching my head like, "this is the guy they partied with in college? He's kind of odd, but okay"
damn straight...i was like puzzled on why is he REHEARSING a response???
The editing was so good in this movie, helped my single-celled brain stay on track
This is a rare case of a movie mastering a sense of scope, of all things?
Like, it feels so snug in its sense of scale, with just the right amount of implications and fantastical elements.
So tight.
I definitely think the editing helps
that’s such a good description
I don't think Cyrus will be found guilty.
He always gets himself off. 😂😂

@robertstoner4973 clever! 😂😂😂
I literally need a bulletin board Charlie Day style to keep track of this
I ALMOST made one but couldn't get my printer to work :(

Pepe Silvia!
Ya paused and re watched a bunch of this video
Hahahaha this is facts
i could see the death coming from a mile away but it still fucked me up soooooo bad lmao
ALSO i think these actors did such a crazy good job cause i was able to follow who was in what body basically the entire time
Oh yeah I think they want you to know it’s coming as the chaos keeps building with Cyrus and Shelby so you’re just WAITING for it to hit
I assumed death was coming, but thought it was going to be more of a Forbes killing them one at a time thing. I’m not disappointed though.
characterization so on point that even in the 10-second segment in round 0 you can tell who’s who
I just loved that Maya went straight to praying once she realized that she was Brooke.
I watched it and oh my god this is going to be a movie I watch over and over
On the exact same page! I’m just starting to get into horror, and this is fairly mild, but god I love it!
I believe this was the second time I’ve ever done it. Possibly the third.
11:45 gives "balcony railing" a whole new meaning.
my favorite part that i haven't seen anyone else notice is that during the first switch, when they're all looking in the mirror, Nikki is in Shelby's body and she looks SO HAPPY about it. like she's posing in the mirror and you can tell she thinks she's so pretty. which makes the whole jealousy thing so much more interesting to me.
The actors definitely get so much credit for making it clear when they were a different ‘character’ each round - fun movie!
I made a joke to my husband after the flashback and it turned out to be the actual twist. I lol’d so hard!
I did same thing! 😂
Yeah I don’t blame anyone getting lost but I think the movie does do a good job reframing people when it matters
Tbf, some movies are meant to be rewatched/ replayed many times. This one fit for tv/stream, but not appropriate for theatre
the hardest part for me was when they referred to each other by name.
@@dogpoliceI think it helps with the pay off of tracking every name, body, and soul
I appreciate it thank you!
I look forward to a less ensemble version that embraces more of the typical and psychological horror.
I agree, it was way more mystery than horror. I got Knives Out vibes.
SPOILER
I couldn't help but feel bad for Brooke even before the body switching.
I genuinely saw you posted this video and went to watch the movie immediately so I could get your commentary without getting spoiled
Literally same, just finished the movie
Me too!
Omg me too! I had it on my list but always forget when things drop. Amanda always coming in clutch!
I'm glad you reviewed it! I enjoyed the movie! Every character was annoying in some way (flaws) but we are annoying to someone. Its realistic to me, and I was so vindicated with the twist!
one of my favorite editing details was actually in the ending credits when they changed the character names to show who was also playing who in a different body. so fun
I mean, it was the only accurate way to show the credits, since all of the actors played more than one character.
So I figured out the Red light showing who’s who initially. But NEVER noticed Forbes never did!
During the peanut butter scene you can see Beatrice
I kept expecting to see it, and then forgetting because things would get so intense.
Me too I thought it was gonna be one of his co-workers who wanted some test subjects
@@mollygrace3068wow that sounds interesting, what is the bame of the book if u can still recall?
It wa giving some Glass Onion vibes, but still it's own thing.
I watched this on your recommendation from a previous video and I’m so glad I did!
Same!!! Is also my favorite movie of this year
same here! my friend had also mentioned it, but i couldn't remember the title until Amanda said it in her previous video. it was fantastic timing, and i'm glad i watched it
This movie was really great and fun!
Ohhh I didn't notice Shelby repeated his words back at him at the end! Such a nice touch.
The actor who played Cyrus is going places… but so is everyone else too his character stands out
Maya and Denis's body's death, or at least how they die is foreshadowed by Brooks drawing particularly the spike imagery
Ah hell yeah new review right as I get home and get my food ready! You got the best timing lol
I just finished the movie 3 minutes ago and came immediately here. This was a phenomenal breakdown, and you pointed out a TON of stuff I missed. Props.
Here are some details I noticed after watching the movie 3 times (SPOILER ALERT!)
1. In the first few scenes you can see the blanket moves up and down when Cyrus was watching Nikki's video. He was masturbating to her, not just to porn.
2. Brooke's drawing was about a girl with a broken heart. And when Nikki asked how come she didn't have a boyfriend, she glanced at Reuben
3. When Beatrice (disguised as Forbes) was standing alone in a room after first entering the house, she rehease her introduction
5. Beatrice yelled "it (the machine) is mine!" but when asked if she's even allowed to take it away from her team, she didn't know what to say
7. Tied-up Beatrice gave the idea of testing Cyrus to Shelby because she also "didn't understand why liars (like Dennis and Reuben) get away with their lies"
8. Dennis doesn't want to be in Reuben's body because Reuben used his body the way he didn't want to. Also he is kinda racist (I guess), asking if he could say the N-word if he was in Reuben's body. He hates that Reuben only cares about his penis/sex stuff (which, well, seems understandable considering what Reuben did with Maya's body the day before his wedding day)
I bet this was wild at the film festivals.
was i the only one hoping cyrus would end up trapped in nikki’s body at the end? i would’ve loved that 😂
Honestly it would have been great thematically
@@juanitacanon3120 i think it would’ve been way worse than prison. still a fun movie though
I don't think that would really be a punishment for him. Cyrus was obsessed with her body, so literally being in it can't be that bad. Plus, she's popular and attractive, he would just need to "out" Nikki as gay and he'd probably live his dream life
That would have been the best punishment
Some of the best acting and editing I’ve seen recently. This film was a pleasant surprise.
Same guy!)
Spoiler pls do not read if you haven't watched the movie:
Even though Nikki was shown to be a little bit scummy, she gets it so rough.
I definitely think a disconnected group could be cool after it was suggested that jumping from body to body can be addictive but even so, this movie stands perfectly fine on its own
Ok, i started this video, you told me to watch it with no info, paused, watched the movie, liked it, and now im back.
My only critique is that I feel like Cyrus’ punishment was a bit much. The fact Shelby wanted to stay in Nikki’s body made me not like her character even more. She could’ve just broke up with him 😭
thats why its a movie lol its supposed to be shocking and dramatic
I am soooo glad you kept insisting we watch it ourselves. HOLY CRAP intensity !
Justice for Nikki. Poor girl didn't do anything wrong besides being too gorgeous
She was probably the less annoying character and she still got scrêwed over.
Honestly, I felt bad for Cyrus.
***********SPOILERS BELOW*****************
He wasn't the best but he didn't deserve the ending he got.
I was sold with how passionate your intro was, just watched- you know movies, period.
This movie was such a breath of fresh air
I stopped the video @ 2:39 and went and watched the movie. It was spectacular and everyone should watch it
I think what makes Nikki’s fate so disturbing is that she was the only one in the group who both had a body to return AND wanted to return to that body. And she final girled tf out of that 3rd act. And they don’t even show what happened to her after the switch - so eerie. Still makes me anxious a day after watching
Great film, I definitely didn’t expect the plots twist and the ending, at least not in exact detail. I hope they make a part 2
Nikki was so real for the peanut butter deadass if I can’t have my body no one can 💀
Well, you got at least one person to pause and go watch it!
Thank you I also feel like it’s a me movie
I saw this movie raw on a whim and I was not disappointed! Good lord was it one of the best Netflix movies I've ever seen! The start of your video makes me want to watch it again!
This is great, I needed a palate cleanser after forcing myself to sit through Megalopolis (no offense to anyone who liked it, but it was a bore)
Agreed on all points
I watched this movie based on the letterboxd description, and i was HOOKED.
the only scene i hated was when the whole room was spinning, just made me dizzy lol. Loved the editing, the music, the splitscreens. Just super stylish but still serving the story.
I really enjoyed this film! Spoiler warning (for my one critique):
I felt like the movie ended by siding with Shelby, even though she let Cyrus be imprisoned for something he did not do which absolutely eclipsed the awful, awful things he did to her.
Thanks!
Watched that movie without knowing anything about it because of you yesterday with my GF and it was such a blast!
Thank you for the suggestion!
I watched this because you talked about it on your last video and said how you should watch it without knowing anything… I did.
What a film!!!
Just cancelled my Netflix subscription. So I live vicariously through you.
