Tebaldi seemed a bit uncomfortable in being fully expressive in this recording in tat she seemed not to be very spontaneous. Nevertheless, she sings with such sincerity and beauty, I'm completely won over to her approach. Overall, I find much to value in this recording- Simionato, Bergonzi, Van Mill and Corena are spectacular. MacNeil copes the best he can with Karajan's slow tempi which drain the drama of appropriate spontonaity in many instances.
@MaestroWenarto: Callas??? She already recorded the work and the scene with Gobbi was best. I remember reading in THE CALLAS LEGACY that when she finished “O patria mia” she hit a hole in the last note that the whole Egyptian army could match through! No Wenarto, Tebaldi was also performing the role at the Statsoper. She was ill and this forced her to miss performances and her recorded performance was off. However Decca could have flown her back to Vienna to re-record various sections to overall improve the recording. BERGONZI is excellent. One of my favorite recordings of the work!😊👍❤️
