Thank you very much for that update. Over the last 10 years the tools that I inherited from my Grandad (born 1871) have gradually faded away and have been replaced. The one thing I haven't been able to replace and miss is a broad tined potato fork which was very useful. Because my land is very light stainless steel isn't so important so most of my stuff is common or garden carbon steel. On that note it's very sad that the Wilkinson Sword stuff is made from Japanese stainless and not British stainless. Two pieces of kit I do use are a Chillington Hoe and a Canterbury Hoe, both bought and made by the Chillington Company in the midlands.
I use a Kent And Stowe long handled (Ash) stirrup hoe it works on the forwards and the return stroke, the stirrup is sharpened on both sides. Incredible difference to weeding, half the time half the effort. Another amazing tool is a Hori Hori trowel.... omg amazing for digging and lifting as it has blades on both sides of the slim trowel, admittedly you can’t shovel earth quickly but it’s easy to keep two trowels on the go.
I can highly recommend the Joseph Bentley Stainless Steel Long Handled Bulb Planter, its great even if you have clay or rock hard soil and good for planting loads of items.
That looks to be a very comprehensive range you have there. For me, I buy the best tools that I don't mind getting stolen. I don't know where the ones you tried out sit on the price scale but I have found that the Spear & Jackson Elements range gives me a level of quality I am happy with at a price I am not going to cry about if it all goes wrong. Fair enough if you carry all tools with you but for a variety of reasons I need to leave mine on the plot so I am not going to splash out hugely. I guess each to their own. Anyway guys nice to see that you are getting noticed, but do look up policies on full disclosure and product placement, as its easy to fall foul of that. All the best.
These look like great tools. I was just looking on there site and they are not a bad price but my only problem is leaving them up the allotment shed and turning up one day to find them nicked it would be gutting. I have been using there cheaper steel range for a while now and these too are great tools and at about half the price it wouldn't be as bad if they got stolen. A very informative review by the way. Regards Peter.
Good to see you back Tony. WS do make a good range of quality tool, also Spear & Jackson I can vouch for. Like a few other gardeners here, I am still using some tools owned by my father & grandfather, but these companies have long gone. For secateurs, I would recommend Felco brand. I always wash off my stainless steel tools at the end of the day and then wipe over. Like your opening comments......A rule of thumb is you get what you pay for . Look forwards the tunnel build videos 😀
If people want a spade thats ideal for trenches and tight work incl fence post holes then buy a builders trenching spade. They look like a pint sized spade and have more of a pointy blade.
I am still using tools inherited from my late father, some of these must be at least 50 years old but starting to look they may need replacing soon. I prefer to pay that bit extra for quality!!
Bet they are still lovely to work with mick, and in my honest opinion I think the quality of wilkinson range could be a good candidate for life long tools
Go to car boots or auctions and get tools with age, it don't matter what they look like so long as they do the job. And in old tools the steal is a far better quality at any price you could pay in a shop.
I agree but old quality tools are attracting a premium these days... The vintage value is quite sought after but car boot sales are still a good source
Really useful video chaps - was hoping you might give out a discount code for WS though - go on I'm sure you can do it! We've got a really old spade and fork picked up for a couple of pounds each at a car boot but by goodness they're heavy - I can barely pick one up let alone dig with it - lovely quality though. Sorry to hear you haven't been well Tony - looking forward to catching up with what's been going on at the plots. Take care.
Hi Jane, if you visit UKHWG's sister site at facebook.com/groups/GardenBargainsDiscountCodes/ There is now a discount code for 10% off all WS garden tools, valid until the end of December 2016 :)
My opinion is that all spades break so you need to buy one with a guarantee. That is the only criterion. This is a very male video. The majority of gardeners in UK and Ireland are female and this kind of video does not appeal - just a thought.
Hi, we forgot to mention that all of the Wilkinson Sword Tools range come with a 10 year guarantee as standard. We have found our audience to be equal in the amount of lady & men gardeners so we try to make useful videos to assist both. I'm not sure how you have come to the conclusion that most of the gardeners in the UK / Ireland are female? That's quite a statement in its own right. Anyway I hope you found something useful and positive in the video 👍
Hi CJ, are you asking us or the lady who posted the original comment? in our opinion all gardeners regardless of gender will have to use tools, we have tried to highlight that the Wilkinson range have tools to suit all
Goodness me. Of course female gardeners need tools. What a notion! I am just commenting on the way the video is presented and who it will appeal to, something which you will be able to see from your video stats. I might be wrong but, I bet this video gets a considerably higher proportion of male viewers than female. But perhaps you are not concerned with that as your channel makes other videos that are more aimed at women. However, perhaps my opinion is not wanted.

I've got a broom like Triggers. Had for over 35 years and it's still going like new!
Jon.
( It's had 15 heads and 10 handles).
Haha brilliant Jon 😂😂
Great advice That's what I've got its great.I have had mine over 10yrs and its still like new. I'm looking forward to the new plot clips, Andy

I would also include hedge shears as they are useful for cutting grass, pruning hedges etc and a dibber. You will use it frequently.

Yes we have stirrup and speed hoes also. They are a gardeners best friend
What is a speed hoe ?? Never heard of one of those.

+mick watson both me and Tony are impressed with the range, the quality and attention to detail so I'm convinced you won't be disappointed

my opinion, dont buy anything unless is got a wooden shaft and handle.
Correct. Also advise not buying from the likes of B&Q etc unless its branded items, otherwise you get made in China junk.
Totally agree,

I didn't say 'most'. I said 'the majority'.
Good about the guarantee.
Thanks for replying.
Why? Do female gardeners not need to use tools? 🤔
