How to Easily Fix and Replace a Spark Plug Boot

  • I bought a second hand used coil for my strimmer. The spark plug boot and retaining spring were detached from the cable. I put it back together making a better and more secure connection.
    So here's how to fix it or replace it, quickly and easily.

    Thank you for a very helpful video upload. I have spent a good few hours wresting with this issue. I must say it really is quite shameful of Stihl to adopt such a poorly engineered spark plug connector when there have been many over the years that simply crimp onto the Lead.

    Like many others, this saved me a real headache. Had bought a “spares and repairs” hedge trimmer which would run but died under revs. Did the full fuel system (as you do), service etc and went to test. Pulled the plug to dab some fuel directly into the cylinder and *ping* there goes the spring from the boot. Hadn’t had to address that before so this video was really useful. Hedge trimmer now working! Hurrah.

    This is the type of connection I'm looking to make. I've got a scooter with a screw on cap and each time the rear suspension moves the wire flexes, eventually causing the boot to unscrew and loosen up. I've tried gluing it in with silicone but it's a losing battle. I love the boot itself for protection on the plug, but what good is that if it doesn't hold the wire.

    Thanks for the video. Hyundai trimmer would not start, I went to check spark plug and pulled the cap off the wire. Reattached the boot and still no start. Spark tester bulb was lighting correctly but no spark at the spark plug. I heated the spark plug with torch flame and after that I got the engine running.
    How the spark plug wire is attached to the coil? Can you remove it or is it glued or something?

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you strip the insulation material back around 1/2", then make the wire end into a sharp V instead of the L shape, you can wrap the exposed wire around the V tightly, apply a bit of solder to it and then tuck it into the insulated rubber. makes a much tighter connection.

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You got to expose the inner wire, so cut back the plastic covering, then reattach the exposed wire to the coil spring in the boot. Then put in a spark plug and turn your engine and if you see a spark then your connection and wire are still good. Hope that helps

    I could only pull the wire through the 90° L bend with forceps. Spraying only made it more difficult for needl-nose pliers to grip. Maybe my boot was more rigid than yours. Like your idea of wrapping some bared wire around the coil; too late for me though. I'm only here to find out how I should have done it!

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you John! Yes, my boot is very flexible even though its about 40 years old. I think the new boots have a plastic/rubber type of material and are definitely more rigid. Glad you managed to fix yours

    • @johncollins8304
      @johncollins8304 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davekennedy52 Yeah, but (as I responded elsewhere since then) ....Turns out there is something wrong inside the 6" ( ?) of ht wire. It's moulded into the coil, which are cheap enough but a) the principle of the thing, b) month by slowboat from China. Looking at doing a splice but didn't realise how THIN the one strand of wire is inside, and DELICATE! I can't find anything on what the anatomy of an HT lead is. The pointy end(s) of the spring coil that fix into the rubbery insulation have no chance of actually hitting the central wire. And by poking probes along the lead to find a place where there is continuity with the body so I can make a splice I think I've destroyed the actual wire! Hey ho!

    • @davekennedy52
      @davekennedy52  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johncollins8304 I'm very surprised to hear that the wire is so thin and fragile. Mine were quite thick. I'm sure you could use the spark plug cables from a car if you are able to splice them. I had the same problem with that pointy end of the spring. I wasn't sure if it was touching the inner wire and it just wouldn't stay in place-kept popping out again.Really irritating to wait that long for parts

      Hi Steve, that is a regular 90 degree boot for a coil. Some of the newer ones are sealed units. That coiled spring is what grips the top of the spark plug and is supposed to hook into the HT cable. Not a clever system at all. Thanks for your comment and for watching
