Movie Motorcycles: Maverick's Kawasaki GPZ 900R; Top Gun

  • "The Need for Speed." The Kawasaki GPZ900R used a 908 cc 16-valve inline-4 engine with liquid cooling. The GPZ made an astonishing 115 hp at 9800 rpm! The GPZ900R used a steel frame, 16-inch front, and 18-inch rear wheels, air suspension, and an anti-dive fork. Importantly though Kawasaki positioned the engine lower in the frame, allowing it to maintain a lower center of mass enabling perfect performance. The motorcycle is owned by our customer, Jerome LeBlanc, a Tom Cruise impersonator. His likeness to Maverick is astonishing. We maintain the bike for him, as he uses it for various promotional events around San Diego.

My shop sold the 2 1984 Ninja 900 s to Paramount. They were re-painted to look like 1985 models.
We carefully reassembled the body work, only to find out they wanted to make it look thrashed, but you can't tell in the movie. Some of the plastic was rashed . They even cracked the lowers and
sewed it up with rusty wire for the Frankenstein look. They got a bit carried away and brought one bike back to the shop so I could weld the left side engine cover.

Really? I had a 1986 900 Ninja with a different paint scheme (red, blue and white) and when I saw Tom dust the old Gpz900R in Top Gun II I almost had tears in my eyes, did you really restore them? did you have two units in your store?

I had the 1985 version, which actually had a red fender with a black lower part, with a thin silver band between them. That scheme carried the main color scheme down to the fender. The "Maverick" bike has an all-black front fender I think the '85 color pattern is the best looking bike Kawasaki ever made, that had a full fairing. I loved that bike, put almost 50K on mine in the two years I owned it. The fairing sucked for airflow through the radiator, the bike would quickly overheat in slow traffic. I swapped out the middle section for an aftermarket one, it looked even better, and had better airflow. I can't remember who made it. Wish I could post a picture, I still have lots of them of this bike, which was the last motorcycle I ever owned.

The bike isn't the star of the film like kit or the a team van. 99.9% of people who watched top gun mainly women would not have a clue what bike he road or care. The star was Tom in them shades and that flight jacket lol still a lovely bike though tbf

I sold the 2 Ninja 900 s that Paramount used.
Bike scenes filmed in San Diego.
I took a few pictures of the filming, as well.

This bike had a defective starter clutch and some heads dropped the valves because of bad keepers
