- "Making Believe" is a country music song written by Jimmy Work and best known for its chart-topping version in 1955 by Kitty Wells. The song is consistently on lists of all-time greatest country music songs and has been covered by scores of artists over the past fifty years, including Thorleifs, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Wanda Jackson, Connie Francis, Ray Charles, Anita Carter, Dolly Parton, , Ernest Tubb, Social Distortion, Skeeter Davis, The Haden Triplets and Volbeat. The song is occasionally called (and performed as) "Makin' Believe". This 1977 version is by Emmylou Harris,
Emmylou's voice has the unique ability to be a breathless whisper delivering one line, and then resonate straight to your soul on the next. It's always a joy to hear her sing.
Well said! That's exactly the way she makes me feel. 💜
I agree. Me too! Love her !!! :)
Try Leeann Womack
I first saw her in Dublin in the 70’s. A friend gave me his ticket. They had double printed tickets and I wound up sitting next to the guy mixing the sound. We got talking and I found out he came from my hometown. He asked me back to the Shelbourne to the after concert party. I got to meet Emmy Lou.
kick ass...
What a beautiful confirmation that we are One and we know our destiny before our birth.
this song and her voice brings tears to my eyes every time!
This video is timeless, breathtaking it’s like the song reaches out and touches you. Emmy is beyond reproach, obviously everyone knows she’s country royalty, but I also am amazed by the band Rodney Crowell and the others aswell forgive me I don’t know their names. The harmonies were subtle yet perfect.
Emmylou and Albert Lee harmonize so well. Saw them in Charleston, WV in the 70's. Fantastic show.
Really great together!
Emmylou's addition of the wordless singing at the end, its tone of grief and loss and hopelessness made somehow beautiful, makes this the best cover of an amazing song.
Thanks for tuning in.
I agree, Kit C.... her voice just cuts right through your heart.
Fav bit x
I agree. Her version of "Tougher than the Rest" which in my opinion is preferable to that of the songwriter also has a "wordless coda" which is very effective:

there is only one Emmylou, just listen to that beautiful voice.
Been in love with her since the very first time I heard her.
Such an Angelic voice..I'm sure she sounds better than the Angels in heaven too. Could listen to her all day all nite long...and love her trio...her harmonies with dolly and Linda. Incredible.
Yeah, especially since all our heaven, hell, angels, & devils are right here, right now :)
Ja standing three loves emmeliu Harris hoodnight😅
Her talent is without question phenomenal. And she is a caring human, a good person. I will add she is beautiful. Met her twice. I guess I'm just a fan.
@@jamesdeeringer6789 that's nice. I wish I could meet her some day and at the least hear her hum.
the clarity of her voice is so captivating makes her an International Treasure, just love her
Hank DeVetto, Brit guitarist, Albert Lee, Glen D. Hardin, the Enactron truck, and who's who in country music has played or sung with ELH. Jimmy Works, who died at 94 years young wrote a good one. Emmylou made it a classic.
Lovley song, sung so beautifully. The innocent passion touches a cord with me.
I like her version the best. She gets as much feeling expressed as anyone could.
Emmylou has a pure voice unmatched in country music. She does have a pure beauty about her and I believe her soul is also pure. My kind of woman!
Just dropping in to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY Emmy Lou and that we share the same birth day -
April 2 !! 🍃🌺

Such a gorgeous voice, woman and song. One of my favourites, so hauntingly beautiful!
Hank on the pedal steel sure does a great job here
It was just a year or so before this song, "Making Believe," that she's singing now, that I ever heard of Emmy Lou Harris. In 1976 at the Circle Star Theater, I thought I went to see Willie Nelson. I never heard of Emmy Lou. She opened for Willie, I could hear her, before I could see her, as the stage turned slowly around as the performers were singing. The stage rolled slowly around, It seemed the lady who was singing, was made out of Angel Clay. That night, she was the prettiest women on the planet. Now 46 years have gone by, she's old and gray-haired, but amazingly, she's still made of angel clay. Still gorgeous beyond belief. That's young Rodney Crowell singing with her. Albert lee playing lead guitar. Their music will famous 1000 years from now.
Emotional tribute to those of us that lost at love and never recovered.
I have always loved this beautiful lady since the first time I heard and saw her. She has that special voice that can't be copied, and the voice of an angel. Sweetheart, you will always have a fan here that loves you dearly! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❤️💜🥰♾️

It's right up there with the great Kitty Wells. We need to carry it on.
Thanks Steve for tuning in.
One of my VERY favorite voices, EVER!
I feel such a sense of loss listening to this. And yet, I haven’t lost anything. She really sells it!
Making believe
That you still love me
It's leaving me alone and so blue
Still I'll always dream
I'll never own you
Making believe
It's all I can do
Can't hold you close
When you're not with me
You're somebody's love
You'll never be mine
Making believe I'll spend my lifetime
Loving you and making believe
Making believe
I never lost you
But my happy hours
I find are so few
My plans for the future
Will never come true
Making believe
What else can I do?
Making believe
I'll spend my lifetime
Loving you and making believe

This has to be one of her most loved songs from over the years.
The real queen of country music.
The Hot Band will go down in history as one of if not the most talented bands in history.
I missed her in 1977 I was on a mormon fucken mission ....
Just beautiful
She has a voice of an angel
I started singing this song on the bus this morning having not heard it for many years.
P. F. 2021. Great Lady.
Happy Birthday lovely❤️
Emmylou could sing about laundry detergent , and that would be fine by me.
Josey Wales-Whatever turns you on.
Y😂ur comment is classic.
I woke up dreaming about her singing this very version of this song. This recording. It is beautiful. Another from the same concert is "Tulsa Queen." Her voice is just amazing to me...Josey Wales, that comment IS hilarious!
It would still be sad and I'd still cry.
@@Rebecc765 damned so right : Tulsa queen is ….no word for the effect on me. Great great lady !

I love both versions kitty wells and Emmy Lou Harris Emmy has a voice that just sticks in your head hauntingly beautiful
Most of the Hot Band. Hank DeVito might be the most under rated pedal steel player ever
My favorite country singer!!!!!🙋♀️
To Taylor Swift: Eat your heart out Taylor, THIS is how it’s done! Emmylou is in a class that you will never approach. Ira Lee, Ph.D.
@@SteveJohnson-sn9gq Be kind.. You never know what people are going through..
Actually, she cites Emmylou and Paul McCartney as career role models. I don't know, is it good or bad in this case.
Taylor can only wish
she looks like Cher and George Harrison combined. Gorgeous, gorgeous! 😍
😊😊
Amazing voice absolutely beautiful 😸
Really hearing a blessed and.beautiful.
Sooo beautiful that I want to cry!
On a package show in Buffalo with us and Kitty Wells and Charlie Pride
The show was long and we're just sittin' there
And we'd come to play and not just for the ride
Well we drank a lot of whiskey so I don't know if we went on that night at all
I don't think they even missed us
Beautiful
I will always love Emmylou best. She just stands there and sings so beautifully and can harmonize with anyone. She is so, somehow, understated. Who is the man with "Shooter" on his shirt? Is it, by any chance, Shooter Jennings? I'd really like to know. Thanks.
Hello 👋 Sue. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I am Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
What A Smooth Voice. Beautiful Woman.
Perfection is just a word but art goes deeper than words. Still Emmylou is perfection in motion.
Soy de Argentina donde tú música es muy importante y valorada te amo mucho gracias por todo
God Bless you Emmylou, June 19, 2021 DDD
So many good versions of this song but only EmmyLou gives me chills.
Thanks for tuning in.
on Bass Mr. Emory Gordy and on the Piano Mr. Glen D. Hardin
And on rhythm guitar and backup vocals Mr. Rodney Crowell
Oliver Bohlender I think old Emory could do with facing the audience !!
Wow, where have I been!? Her voice is incredible!
