This uses hand painted pieces of paper that are cut out and animated physically, combining stop-motion and graphic animation. These are placed in stacks on movable glass plates and photographed. Oil-on-glass was his preferred method earlier in life.
TRANSLATION: The rains of the long journey have torn my hat, and my coat has crumbled in the daily storms. Accustomed as I am to extreme poverty, I feel sorry for myself. Suddenly, remembering that master of mad verse who traveled long ago in the province I wrote… In the withering gusts of a wanderer- how much like Chikusai I have become!
I appreciate the skill and technique but to me this kind of animation just means feeling anxiety and claustrophobia, its like a nightmare, dreary, weird slow movement... I can't watch it..
Just wanted to add that all the art is made by his wife, Franchesca Norstein. She deserves to be recognized for her amazing work
Her name is Francesca Yarbusova. She is genius! And she is very shy at the same time. She called herself the brush of Yuri Norstein
So what does yuri do?
@@boobiedefloop6097 He did! He created the idea, he knew exactly how the heroes and the scene should look like, he animated them

Be silent.
russian animation is so underrated. they're like moving paintings. nothing compares to their technique.
Well said.
@A young racoon Hehe
Only underrated by US film industry. Yuri's work is undoubtedly the best, not only the best animation but one of those best film masterpieces.
This isn't any Russian animation though.
@@clevername8832 The animator is Russian.

In the withering gusts of a wanderer-
how much like Chikusai
I have become!
The Shakespeare of animation.
Mad with poetry,
I stride like Chikusai
into the wind.......
Thanks for posting this! The Norsteins work is amazing. I can feel the environments they create. And Basho is great, too.
The sound of the woodpecker - so fitting!
This rivals the animation films of any country, beautiful story, illustration, and colors… + + +
i LOOVE the wind sound
Wow man.. how did he make that!! Its even more perfeccionist than Tim Burton's animated films.
Perfection
One can aspire much from Norshteyn.
Isao takahata of Ghibli admired him enormously.. There are references to basho in the Yamadas film
never mind. found clip "Winter days / Fuyu no hi [1]" uploaded by MATROSD, with the translation.
i read that he uses painted glass panels about a meter thick
Nice
oha çok güzel
Poetry.
Heavenly...
is there more or is this the complete film?
It's one small segment of a much larger narrative
This is very moving, exceptional piece- unfortunately the English translation does not make sense and is not in synch with the movie
I'm sorry Peter fermin and Oliver Postgate, norstein knocks it out of the park
Sad that these days this would take 1 person a few hours to make. This is a lost art and I will miss it
it wouldnt look as good though
is it old japanese anime?)
is it possible to translate the Japanese at the start of the clip?
In the withering wind
it is Chikusai
whom I resemble!
nicht von dieser Welt
Sehr schön gesagt.

I think then we can only appreciate it. But does this mean you don’t enjoy it ?
