  • As game masters, dungeon masters, storytellers and narrators, we need to take a few things into account when planning our roleplaying game campaigns, and a few things before that too! These are the things that I believe you should be keeping in mind before you plan your next D&D, Star Wars or Pathfinder campaign.

Well, I once had blue hair (a long time ago, when I still had hair on my head). Little did I know that the chloride in the swimming bath's water that I visited next day would turn that beautiful blue into spiderwebbish, mossy grey-green, a color that can probably often be found in that Steinhardt's Guide to the Eldritch Hunt. I'm still recovering from the many failed insanity checks, so consider this a life lesson well-learned.

I learned that same lesson when I dyed my bangs electric blue over the summer (when I was still a teen) and when school started back up we did swimming first in gym, my hair went from blue to zombie green/gray.
I had to strip the color from it because it was soo bad.

I'm so glad you talked about coincidences as a DM tool. I hate them because I find them so constructed. But on the flip side they really are helpful and kind of needed. Just nice to see I'm not the only person who gets hung up on them 😅

One of the most fun and helpful parts of planning I’ve used here in my first campaign is writing/journaling in character as the main npc, helps nail down their voice, motivations, etc. and it’s been helpful to go back and refresh who/what they are trying to do.

I think the handling of coincidences is one thing that the Shadowrun system will handle quite well. A big part of the system is networking, and not the digital kind (though it certainly has that too!); one of the major resources you have access to from character creation is your contacts. Any time the players are setting up to do a job, one of the best things they can do to get ready is to reach out to their contacts to get any information or supplies they need. The "coincidence" then becomes something the players are actively seeking out, and when they get a hit it's a reward for clever thinking, good roleplaying, and asking the right people the right questions. Also, with the networking aspect of the game, the coincidence can be made a lot more believable (kind of like the idea that you're only 6 degrees of separation from anybody on Earth; reach out to enough people and eventually somebody will know something about nearly anything - whether they want to tell you or not is another matter). Instead of the players just happening to overhear one guy at the bar grumbling, it is that a person they reached out to follows the blog of a disgruntled ex-employee. Or that they hit up a job posting site where a recently let go employee of the company is now looking for work. It gives the players the agency to seek out those connections rather than having it just fall into their lap. The contact can possibly set up a meeting with the runners and this ex-employee. Is it a coincidence that the place they're going to hit up has a disgruntled employee willing to help? Yes, albeit a coincidence that takes into account player agency in actively seeking out that big break (as opposed to just being thrown a bone by the GM).

Plus coincidences are fine to even great to start a story, they can just be terrible when ending them (and you aren’t writing a comedy and trying to play it serious)

In a campaign I'm working on I've made something like different "zones" which are massive places that are very different from each other but each carry a narrative that is specific to the place and also ties together the players might discover if they want (or they can do whatever). Almost like a "Beginner zone" -"intermediate" - "advanced" and "end-game" area, with other optional places that they might visit if they feel like.

That hair is way more grey than blue.
I dont agree with the PCs being "heroes" all the time. I prefer to seem them as normal people. Thats why I like warhammer 4e so much. The characters die all the time and get replaced by new ones. Nobody has any backstory, no plot hooks. The game is like a board game, not a glorified RP session. The people are not there to make a "story" they are there to play a actual game.
