I’m Irish and have visited the US a few times.
One time me and a couple of friends were in a store in NYC and were chatting. This older woman (I’m only taking like 50’s) came up to us and asked where we’re from so I said Galway, Ireland.
I’ll never forget the next thing she said to me.
“Wow, your English is really good.”
To which I replied: “thanks, yours too” and smiled.
She looked so confused for a solid 5 or 6 seconds before informing me that:
“of course it is because she’s from America”, so I said something like “aye, and I’m from Ireland where we’ve spoken English for longer than your country’s existed” and carried on shopping 😂

to be frank, people in Ireland are supposed to be speaking Irish no? its a no brainer to the average person. It's not our fault the Irish chose to stick with English instead and letting their mother tongue die out.

@@connoroneill9406 Hmm it is dying out. Just look at the recent stats. Only few older people are fluent at native level all situated in far rural parts of Ireland. Funny enough, there are more fluent Welsh speakers, followed by Scottish Gaelic than Irish. Moreover, with recent immigration, the Irish govt does not require for new immigrants to know basic Irish, unlike Germany or Sweden where knowing the basics of the national language is mandatory by law. Oh man I remember talking to this girl who was studying abroad in the Netherlands (my country). She was a nice girl but she was a textbook example of how the American education system failed her in multiple ways. A prime example was history and how 'old' things are. She was oh so proud of her old town, and how it was founded somewhere in the 1700's and had a lot of old architecture yadda yadda. I'm sure it's great, I love old architecture and culture. But I asked her if she visited some of ours in the city she's studying at, we've got a lot of history too. Her response was "it can't be that old." It was a big discussion because she refused to believe there was a world before the USA and she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that my town was founded in 792. Not 1792, but 792. I had to show her the wiki lmao.

I was a Taxi Driver. I picked up a passenger from the Airport who had just flown in from California. As we were driving to the hotel, he was looking out the window and turned to me to say, "Gee, you guys sure have imported a lot of Eucalypts."
Caught by surprise, I replied, "What do you mean?"
He gestured expansively out the window at the bushland we were driving through, and explained to me as if I were a little slow, "All these trees are Eucalypts. They are from California, where I am from. You guys sure must have imported a lot to have so many!"
I just about had a brain aneurysm trying to process this thought, and all I managed was "Um, they are native to Australia..."
He just gave me a pitying look, shook his head sadly at my ignorance, and stated, quite authoritatively, "No, I think you will find they are from California!"
I let the confusion clear from my face, smiled and said simply, "Oh, I guess we must have imported all the Koalas also."
Again he shook his head pityingly and said, slowly, talking to the obvious simpleton I am, "No, those are native to Australia."
"Oh," I said, confused again, "Given they eat only Eucalypt leaves, they must have been very relieved when we imported so many to save them from starvation..."
He looked a little confused, and said "No, they eat Gum leaves."
"Mate," II replied, "Gums *ARE* Eucalypts. They and Koalas are native, the seeds were taken from Ballarat and Bendigo to California during the '49 Gold Rush, and that is how you ended up with Eucalypts in the USA!"
He absorbed this for a while, all sorts of emotions playing over his face as he reassessed his entire existence, then he turned to me and said "Was Australia already settled in 1849?"
    I gave up... 🤦‍♂️

@@paquitagillis901 But England hasn't been a country since the Acts of Union 1707 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_Union_1707). If Texans should say they're from the US then shouldn't people from England say they're from the UK/Britain/Great Britain?
EDIT: I should've written 'sovereign nation' instead of 'country'. Both Texas and England are non-sovereign entities/regions within sovereign nations with England being a non-sovereign country and Texas being a non-sovereign state. If one thinks one should say either what sovereign nation one is from or what country one is from, but not what state one is from, then obviously Texas is not an option, but England is. I think this is a pretty strange rule though and IMO, if it's OK to say England, then it should also be OK to say Texas (which I think it is, even if not preferable).
A final issue is pragmatics. One should not say they're from somewhere no one has heard of. Most people have heard of England and Texas, very few have heard of Victoria outside of Australia and New Zealand.

@@chaoticsequencer it's not semantics, ffs. Nation and Country are two different definitions in dictionary. Nation CAN eventually be used as a synonymous of country only if the cultural heritage and the country territory coincide, but it's a very broad definition and doesn't always identify as a country. Ex. The First Nation in the US refers to the Native Nord American People, but not to the US or Canada, which are the countries those people currently live in. So. Not semantics. Everyone says their country when asked where they are from, never heard anyone refer to their nation as their country (also because they don't necessarily coincide).

Many times I've had arguements with Americans telling me that I need to learn English and to speak proper English because they read that I Spelled Colour, Honour, Neighbour, and humour the proper way. One of them insisted that she were in the right all the time and I was wrong. It dragged on for a bit just to lure Her into a direction I wanted Her to go until She said "Where did you learn English because it's terrible". I said "In England. I'm from Britain!" to which She replied "You can't be. I know English because I'm speaking it and you're not. You are a liar!". This get's more entertaining; so I say "OK then, what language do you think we speak in Britain?" She replied "Err, British Duh!". I know where this is going so I go along with it. "And what Countries are in Britain?" to which She replied "One, Britain is a country. Shows how smart you are!". Here I'm going to try to educate Her. "Is that so? Google: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and tell me what Google says". So She does and comes back "OK. I saw Britain but I didn't see England. You're stupid!". So then I ask "Where's London?" Me giving my screen a stupid face look at this point. She replied "In England stupid!". I'm getting frustrated by her stupidity at this point then said "Right, England is a Country in Britain". "No stupid. England is in the UK. I knew you were lying" was her response.
Cutting it short. The arguement went on and on. She claimed that Her English was correct and My English was wrong because She was speaking English and even though This country spawned the language and My family have been here for over a thousand years She was in the right. I just left her to it and let her idiocy speak for itself for all to see. This is not an isolated case. I've had variations of this arguement so many times I've lost count. As he tried to explain, that germans (karl benz & gottlieb daimler) somewhat invented the car and therefor there are ofcause cars in germany they were shocked and almost looked at him like he was the anti-christ in person.
I mean how can you not know something basic like this, especially when there are mercedes and volkswagon in the us too?!? xDDD

When I first met my husbands cousin we talked for a while and it seemed completely natural to her that I speak good English, until my husband pointed out to her that my native tongue is German. Somewhat confused she asked, “what do you mean, when talking to your family at home in Germany you don’t all speak English?”
I was at an absolute loss for words. I couldn’t even grasp the amount of stupidity and ignorance in those words. And she was being dead serious.

I did an online course from a USA university but with people talking part across the world. We had exams and these ran in a 24 hour time slot, the exam itself only talking a couple of hours but once you started you had to finish within six hours. So you needed to decide when you wanted to start to fit in with your day. The dates were posted at the start of the course so everyone could plan, with the start times reference to UTC+0.
First exam - carnage. Everyone in non USA countries seemed to be fine figuring out the time difference but not so Americans. Not all Americans of course, but a surprising number just assumed that the window start times posted were referenced to their time zone (which is extra weird as the USA has a number of time zones just across that country) but this was just the start of it. Over the next few days in the forum there was a discussion about what UTC+0 means and why a course aimed at an international audience might decide that is a good way of describing time - us all just having to add to or subtract from 0.
Most, while still being a bit grumpy that their specific time zone was not the base, came round but there was a group in one USA area who would not have it, saying it made the most sense to use their time zone as the base. Their argument? Everyone watches America TV and there was a particular show (cannot remember what it was now) that was popular so everyone across the world would just know what the time zone is in that part of the USA, their part, where the show was set. We would all just know, as a matter of course, what the time difference was between our place in the world and theirs.
Still can't get my head round even starting to unpick the logic but it sort of went that because we watched say... Friends... everyone across the world knew, in their heart and soul, the time difference between their country and New York so it made the best sense to have that as a base.
The people who ran the course kept it at UTC+0 and added a link to a website to help with the conversion.

Without exception all Americans wrote their location as USA & abbreviations for their state. Everyone else wrote country name & city or region in full.
After noticing this I asked everyone not to use abbreviations for their states, but write the state name in full as this is an international swap.
It made no difference to the USA participants as they just continued to use the state abbreviations.

Ian, I think the real problem is that it is very hard to create a sense of American (US) exceptionalism if your governments were to encourage their citizens to learn about the rest of the world. You have watched the videos comparing working conditions in the States compared to other countries and the differences in medical care and costs. You have seen how badly things are run in the US for the average punter. Very hard for a politician to bang on about communism and socialism, if the people listening actually understand how the concept works in the civilised world. You might note I don't include the US in that. Any country that puts individual success ahead of the needs of the community is not wholly civilised.
I have always enjoyed the company of people I have met from the US. Almost universally you are polite and friendly. On the other hand you are so woefully and sometimes wilfully ignorant of the world in general that it can be frustrating and annoying. The Great America is a dream from 60 years ago that has been corrupted by corporate greed and even worse politicians. The fact that your schools aren't fully funded by the states but rather have to basically beg for money just leads to lower and lower education outcomes. Don't get me wrong, the brilliant will find a way to succeed no matter what, but for the average student, they will continue to live in ignorance.

He in fact also tried to tell me that the Brits were inferior to the Americans and how wonderful the American GI's were. I could not help but snap back at him as I'd had enough of his crap by this time. I asked him what the advantage was in having "Light Switches" operating in reverse to countries in Britain and the Commonwealth. Secondly, it just so happens that our water goes down the sinkhole in reverse to the Northern Hemisphere because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, and finally I told him that if he were discussing military matters (An as an Ex Serviceman I could speak from experience) I would not be crowing too loudly about how good the US army was as during the War of 1812, The Black Watch (yes we Scots who had now entered the British army for the first time) took hold of Washington and burned down what was the Presidential residence in which the incumbent James Madison (was President) took flight. The Presidential Palace bore scorch marks and was subsequently painted WHITE to prevent the local inhabitants from feeling despair; flattening morale. This clown then asked me: "HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT". I said I read History in Kindergarten. That shut him right up. Sorry but I am not casting aspersions at US soldiers. I served along side them and they were good chaps, but I had to put that moron back in his place. Cheers

The Gloucesters retook the hill and totally out numbered they held it until wiped out by a superior force. The Aussies showed you lot how to fight at Kapyong. Read what happened to US and South Korean troops at the battle of the YALU River. the US lost all but two of your boys, which was put down to arrogance and poor training. Out gunned, and running out of ammunition, the lads of D Company held on, killing over 245 (By Body Count). During the battle, 17 Australians were killed and a further 25 were wounded, one of whom later died of wounds. This was the highest number of Australian casualties incurred in any one engagement of the Vietnam War. The losses on the Vietnamese side were at least 245 dead, an estimated 350 wounded, and three captured. That was a common complaint on a website during the pandemic, called 'View from my Window'. People in isolation around the world sent photos of their own view and some of them were spectacular, so there was obviously a lot of curiosity about their origin.
Being an international website, most contributors labelled their photo with the area and country. Americans, however, almost always just wrote the town and an abbreviation for their state. When people commented, asking them to write state (in full) and country, the general response was to 'look it up on Google'.

As a Canadian who has travelled around much of the eastern side of the U.S. I could write a book about things like this. What irritates me the most is that Americans assume they invented everything.
People wonder why Americans are so self-centred as a nation. Here's one of the reasons why.
Much of this comes from a deliberate effort by the U.S. media to obscure the origins of new developments and make them sound as if they were all from the U.S.
Here's how this is done. Let's say Reuters puts a story on the wire about French scientists making an important discovery in the fight against a nasty disease. This story leads, "French scientists in Lyon have announced today that . . . " and a Canadian newspaper would run the story as is. A U.S. paper will delete the the French references and run the story as, "Scientists have announced today . . . " knowing full well that U.S. readers will automatically assume that the scientists were American.
One of the worst examples happened a number of years ago. We were watching the Canadian news on TV then we switched over to NBC news (a U.S. TV network that we can get in Canada). Three stories ran on the Canadian news channel: Canadian researchers had made an important discovery in the fight against HIV/AIDS, a Canadian aircraft (DHC Twin Otter) with a Canadian crew flew to Antarctica to rescue an American scientist who had suffered a heart attack, and the Canadian made robotic arm was being installed on the International Space Station.
NBC ran the three same stories and never once used the word 'Canada'. In fact they went out of their way to ensure that no one watching the broadcast would associate these stories with Canada. Only pictures of the robotic arm and the Twin Otter plane that lacked Canadian flags or registration were shown. The significance of the HIV/AIDS development was explained by an American researcher, leaving everyone with the impression that his team was responsible for the development.
These aren't isolated examples. They happen every day in every news media in the U.S. And we wonder why Americans sound so smug.

A Canadian born football player was recently signed by an American NFL team and it was noteworthy enough for the story to be picked up by a number of U.S. sports news outlets.
Some outlets repeated the original story which contained references to the fact that he was Canadian. Others however, deliberately removed all of those references, leaving the impression that he was an American. Since he had attended a U.S. university, it was an easy con to pull off.

He was amazed that a foreigner spoke his language, and we chatted for a while. So he asked where I'm from (Austria), and I asked him where he's from, and guess what he said? "Italy". No shit, Sherlock XD. I had to explain I meant: which region of (bloody obviously) Italy (Campania). I missed a chance there to say that then he certainly must have some mozzarella cheese on him :).
The idea that any significant number of Europeans, let alone any kind of majority, wants to move to the US is simply laughable. We know about your health business (or "care" as you call it). We know about the gun nuttery and the mass shootings. We know about people working several jobs without making a living. We know about a level of crime and violence this entails. We know about the religious nuttery. We've seen Bush and Trump. If you want a majority, ask about Europeans who definitely DON'T want to live there, and wouldn't do so without a hell of a good reason.
The infamous Trump quote about shithole countries, when he asked "why don't we get more people from Norway?" is particularly hilarious. You mean, why do people from one of the richest countries in Europe, with the highest standards of living, great social services, healthcare, low crime, low poverty, excellent infrastructure, excellent schools, low inequality etc. want to leave their country to be a probably hated alien over THERE??? Well, I don't know, it's a terrible conundrum!!!
These are not the times of Irish potato famine, poverty in Italy or Germany, wars and despotism. Times have changed. You need to pull your head out of your arse and recognise that America being the greatest in anything is at least 50 years out of date, and that you have fallen behind everyone else on almost any metric: freedom, security, social services, infrastructure... In order to improve, you must stop dissing other countries and recognise that YOU have become a shithole country.

@Smiling Shadow Clearly a right wing Nazi sympathising misogynistic racist bigoted government is your preference. I went to the US several times before 2005 on business and pleasure and it was poorer than many European countries. It also has appalling working conditions and employee rights compared to Europe. I constantly had problems with US staff trying to take short-cuts in a distorted belief that it would make more money when in fact they were putting contracts in jeopardy. American employees had no maternity leave, holiday or any right to question instant dismissal. Colleagues in Germany, Spain Netherlands etc were much more effective and were far better at independent decision making. I found European employees were motivated by trust, self confidence and closer cooperation. American employees were driven by fear of losing their job, especially if there was a health issue. As for the guarantee of retiring as a millionaire, I have done that but I also get to keep it with free healthcare and low tax in an European country of my choice. I speak two languages and capable in another and my German wife is fluent in 3 (we have friends who are fluent in 4) so choosing a place to live was fun, house-hunting in arid climates and alpine regions.

@Smiling Shadow See what you did there? You couldn't help but assert that I'm being "bitter", that is, envious, of the supposed US greatness, and dismiss my views out of hand. I had listed (some of) the reasons why the US is today a shithole country - you could have taken any or all of those and tried to prove me wrong, but nah - you are not willing to take any of those seriously, instead you imply that I'm just envious. Which, besides being childish, is also the reason why the US not only is, but will remain, a shithole country.
Not that it matters, but you don't sound at all like an European or someone who knows Europe. The cheesy old line about "Not in a million years could I do $elsewhere what I could do in the US", just like the "Only in America you could..." is typical of an American who has no clue about how things are elsewhere. Nobody who knows about things here would say that you can't achieve your goals if you try. People start and run successful businesses here all the time. This is borne out by statistics: social mobility index is far higher in Europe than in the US.
Certainly, you can make a lot of money in the US. Taxes are low, you don't have to pay for insurance (yours or your employees'), there are less regulations to meet etc. Sure, you can get rich. Provided you don't get sick, you don't have a breakdown, you don't suffer a catastrophic event, you don't get killed while being robbed or burgled, you don't get addicted to substances because other businesses used the lack of regulations to hook you on addictive medication... There's a whooole lot of ifs in there. With all the stuff that happened to me until now, without the social safety net and support, and the medical help, I guess I would be homeless now - instead of living a comfortable life, as is the case.
You say that any well-educated European is near-guaranteed to retire as a millionaire - presumably based on your own experience. But that's cheating. These well-educated Europeans, allegedly including you, have profited from all of the benefits we have here - were cared for, raised, educated for free, paid for by the community - and you then go to the US and compete with people who are hundreds of thousands in debt just for going through school. The salaries are high because they MUST be, because those people must have a chance to pay off their debts. The success you're bragging with is paid for by us, people who paid to educate you, and your colleagues, the people who get in horrible debt to achieve what you got for free. You're gaming the system. Good for you. But that's not sustainable. The chances of your American colleagues are considerably worse than yours, thanks to your privilege.
So why don't we all do what you did and leech off both systems? Because we don't want to. We don't want to get rich at any price. Most people here just want to live a good life. To have time to live, not worry about stuff, and just enjoy yourself. A Frenchman who refuses to put in more than 34h on a union job does so because he wants to have an hour or hour and a half to enjoy his meal at noon. A German doesn't want to put in extra hours because he wants to spend time with his family. A Dutch person doesn't want to only work when not sleeping because they want to travel to Italy for two weeks every year. An Italian doesn't to work all day because they want to have their 4 or 5 weeks paid vacation just to enjoy doing nothing (since they're already in Italy, they don't have to travel :) )
I don't want to be rich. I wouldn't mind having too much money, but as things stand, I have enough to buy things I want. And I have the freedom and time to enjoy the things have. What would be the point of pissing your life away, accumulating money you don't need so you have a lot of it when you finally drop dead? Screw that, I want to live now.
Anyway, enjoy your success. And don't go assuming everyone else wants the same as you.

Had a situation where one lovely afternoon I decided to indulge myself and go to my regular bar for lunch, a pint and to do the crossword in the newspaper. Anyhow, there were about ten people (this is by the way Temple bar in Dublin.) sat around the Pub and I was sat like a skinny 'Norm Petersen' at the bar engrossed in my crossword. When to my right, a guy sitting 4-6 stools away loudly blurts out "Newtons second law of thermodynamics proves there's a god." to no-one in particular. Everyone glances at each other. I look at the barman, he looks back at me with a 'Oh shit no!' look, and retreats into the front part of the bar. I sighed and swiveled around on my stool. "Newton's? As in Isaac Newton, creator of calculus and of apple on head fame? His second law on thermodynamics?" I asked.
    'Yessir' He replied
"Ok, its showtime" I thought. "Okay, firstly Thermodynamics as a science did not exist in the 17th Century, Secondly Isaac Newton did not study anything close to what could be associated with thermodynamics. He did however formulate his second law of motion."
The guy looked smug at this revelation on Newtons second law of motion may vindicate him.
"However, simply put, it states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction." (Yes, I know I got it's Newton's second and third law of motion mixed up... but the goon wouldn't know.)
The guy looked blankly at me.
"There is though a second law of thermodynamics..."
    The guy perked up slightly.
But that essentially states that if you heat up an Iron bar and hold the opposite end the heat will eventually reach the end of the bar, however some of the energy will be lost during the process. Essentially, there's no such thing as a free meal. So I'm not quite sure how either prove there's a god."
The guy scowled at me, rolled up his sleeve and held up his forearm showing a tattoo "I live by the word of god" looking closely I could see it was that well worn line from Leviticus 18 'Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.'
"Uh huh", I replied "I presume it's the King James version or the derivative New American bible your tattooist is using. Because Leviticus also states 'Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you' and states it is punishable by stoning."
The guy stormed off and as he got to the door yelled 'Fucking pinko commie!'
I just couldn't help my self and yelled after him "Your constitution states all 'men are created equal' if that isn't a communist statement then I don't know what is!"
I actually got a round of applause and the barman re emerged with a pint saying 'I knew you wouldn't let that slide'.
Now I know that a lot of Newton's theorem etc. I've grossly oversimplified, or stretched/warped to fit. But that idiot wouldn't know.

They started boarding families with small children etc and they also board Buddhist monks at the same time to prevent passengers accidentally touching them (Buddhist observance in a Buddhist country). A middle aged American couple went to join the Monk's queue with the lady most likely to come into contact with them. The airport check in person raced towards them but I was closer and understood so stepped out between the monks and the couple and explained the situation. The man then said. "Why that's ridiculous, it wouldn't happen in the states." His wife had by then looked at the Thai's reaction, realized their faux pas and pulled her husband away and calmed him down.

I worked for a car parking company a few years ago. Reception and answering queries an public email was one of my many jobs. I listened to the usual phone messages from over night one morning, to find a message from a couple of American men. They were ringing to find out how to drive a rental car (obviously they were hiring a car at the airport, for which my company managed the parking). They were complaining big time! They couldn't work out how to drive the car since the steering wheel was apparently on the WRONG SIDE of the car! The conversation went on for some minutes while they discussed it. They wondered how do you drive when everything (steering wheel/gear stick/dip sticks etc) is on the wrong side. They thought the car was some kind of huge mistake. They thought it would be difficult to drive it on the road since the steering wheel was on the passenger side. EVEN IF they were so incredibly ignorant that they didn't realise Australia drove on the other side of the road before they came, this conversation where they couldn't work it out just seemed ludicrous! They were in a CAR PARK filled with other cars. They didn't think to look at them to see what side other cars had their steering wheels? It didn't AT ALL occur to them that in Australia we might just drive on the OTHER SIDE of the road. They eventually hung up, seemingly without a resolution to their problem! We played that message throughout the office to peels of laughter!
I never replied to their message since it wasn't our company's concern at all (they needed to talk to the rental company with complaints about rental cars). But HOLLY CRAP!! I knew Americans were stupid, but that really drummed home exactly how stupid!! Chimpanzees are smarter than that!!
