"Ecru" (A-kroo) is just the name of a color. I don't know why it was never assigned a number like every other color in the rainbow, but it's just a very light beige color, often used as a "skin tone". The cotton string I used to use to crochet doilies came most commonly in "white" or "ecru" - which is just an "off-white". The word "Ecru" is actually french, meaning raw or unbleached.
