Love the video! You can hit escape to get rid of the image stamp overlay, I'm currently developing a downloadable standalone version where I'll have more control over the keybindings (maybe I'll add right click as another way of getting rid of the stamp overlay)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video! I’m a DM who hates drawing maps and have been wanting something like this for a very long time. I use Donjon cuz it’s quick but isn’t great for Roll20. You’ve highlighted a wonderful tool that I’ll put to use immediately! Very happy to have stumbled upon this and your channel. Thanks!

This is astonishingly good. I just had to put my campaign on hiatus because of some family issues, but this was EXACTLY the tool I was looking for. I love these simple style maps. I dislike heavily colored, rendered and visually complicated maps. The game happens in our heads, not on a Photoshopped game board.
    Thanks for this.

This program is absolutely huge if you're running games that, well, aren't 5e (or otherwise don't have any easy ways to convert the map to VTT). So if you're a GM (or know one) that runs games which has old maps that the book expects the GM to redraw it anyway do them a favor and show them dungeon scrawl (and this excellent tutorial)
Thanks for all the info, Bob, absolutely great video!

  • @workreplacement6272

I appreciate this find. I started playing with Dungeon Scrawl and was just making shapes and drawing and adding random rooms. A part of it looked cool and it reminded me of an idea I've had for a puzzle dungeon that fizzled out. Anyway, I've been writing away and making additions to the map as I go. Crazy easy tool to use. I might have to scale this dungeon back though. Its easy to get carried away.

Seriously, one of the best options in this program, it has an Isometric Mode.
Most Dungeons for fantasy style games, are going to be multi layered. Here
you are able to create maps with height levels. Of course it's not the 3D tile
based builds, as so many newer apps feature. But, this is a cool idea.

Thanks for another insightful video, Bob. You've got lots of new DMs and players - myself included - so I would like to get a video on recommended techniques to incorporate pre-made maps and other tools into our game sessions. Like, how to print Dungeon Scrawl (or other) maps on a home printer so they scale 1:1; how to use a digital screen or projector for a map; techniques for using large, multi-page maps; how to incorporate fog of war; etc. Keep up the great work!

"We have this weird thing where the hallways are split so your tokens would be oddly positioned"
Thats what I really hate about certain VTTs that for some reason think the grid is this restricting thing, like these are spaces in a board game or a game of chess
You don't have to stand in line with the grid, and I'm tired of pretending thats how its meant to work
The grid in my mind has always been a guideline. Every part of the game speaks in distance, the grid is meant to mark distance
You can stand wherever the heck you want, the grid is jus there to give a reference for how far away something is or how big a space is
If I'm in a hallway, just because the grid doesn't line up with the hall, I can still see those lines drawn perprendicular to teh wall that tell me every 5 foot distance that makes up the hallway
If VTTs stop being dumb about it, and let us place our tokens wherever we want, there would be no problem with going off grid

I like running games with tokens, but I don't get snobby if they don't perfectly fit. ;)
    I just figure it's approximation anyway. :)

I found your video a little late.... still very useful! Thanks for making the video. I will try this out as I am looking for mapping tools. I still need to find a tool that allows me to build a map that reveals a section at a time. Please let me know if you know of one. Thanks again!! +1 sub 🙂

I know this isn't exactly the best place to report bugs, but I'm having an issue where i hold space to pan and I move my mouse and nothing happens. My map stays exactly where it is. It still removes hatching, etc as if it were going to pan, yet nothing actually happens. Is this a WebGL error or something? If anyone has any ideas as to where I could find tech support either, that'd be appreciated. Thank you!

If you're still having the issue, I recommend finding Probable Train's contact info on the website. Good luck!

Very Helpful, thank you! Is there a Free Program you use if you want to make a custom world map?

I need to make a map for an encounter in Icespire Peak that doesn’t have a map (other maps I just found images of, copy-pasted into paint, saved and imported to Owlbear Rodeo cuz I’m lazy af) and I need to make a ravine that’s sixty feet wide and ten feet deep but I have no clue how to do the ten feet deep part on a 2D map
Also I think I’m gonna use this for maps in Dungeon of the Mad Mage; tokens will fit better in the squares than they do with the copy-pasted maps XD

Thank you for the tutorial, as a beginner DM this was awesome! I was just wondering if there's a way to control the layer that the objects are put on? So if I want to make something "appear" when my players find it, I can just toggle the visibility of that layer. I'm not sure if that's possible or not?

I want to create a dungeon with hidden rooms to use in tabletop simulator but is there any way to hide layers on there? I thougth maybe downloading the seperate layers in a zip document would help but I have no idea how I'd make a map taht could hide the layers. If anyone know how to do that that'd be great!

You can change the transparency of layers in the program, but I guess that would still involve exporting and using multiple maps. That would work though if you just stack the maps in your VTT and then reveal certain areas as you go. Alternatively, just make separate maps for the other hidden areas.

I can’t export my map onto one full sheet of paper. I can change the cell size and make it smaller but it still isn’t centered and is cut off onto a second page
