I used to be a hardcore Harry Potter fan. Me and my family LOVED the movies and books. And I still think they're well-done and fun. But I was warned of the demonic substances inside the book. At first, I thought it was silly to think that such a lighthearted children's series could be anywhere near demonic. So I ignored it, as did my family. But recently, I feel like God has opened my eyes to see the truth. I listened to Fr Ripperger speak of how many exorcisms were done primarily because someone read the books. And that spooked me. Then I found out that JK Rowling literally joined an occult so that she could understand witchcraft more thoroughly, using that information in her books. People have claimed that the spells in Harry Potter are actual spells that have gotten people in troublesome situations. Finally, after watching this video, I was completely settled for what I was going to do. This priest is not making up anything. I truly believe that the devil hides behind the most innocent, appealing things often times. And Harry Potter is one of them. I am very sorry to whomever is forced to choose between a beloved series and the Truth. I know it can be hard. But I did it and survived. We must remember that earthly material will not matter once we enter Heaven. You'll be happy you made this decision.

It teaches that choices matter and that we are strengthened through friendship - connectedness. Would any of you out there do me (and those I teach) a by giving me at least 6-12 different examples from Harry Potter where the heroes achieve "good" via evil means, including the use lies, mainpulation, & deception? my daughter wanted to read and watch this series, I told her no and I knew christians were warned about this show, my daughter I found out yrs later she watched it at her friends house, as a parent I can only do so much, kids will do things anyway, I tried to tell her the reason why I said no to her, but I had to be simple about it
I think that if you're going to allow your children to read the HP books, you should read them yourselves first and then be involved with your child as they are reading the stories. I think that children should have a firm basis in their faith before they start reading books like these. I agree with those who say that the HP books illustrate valuable lessons for Catholics, but someone without a firm foundation in the Faith could easily get off on the wrong track without guidance.
Yes, I know of two people who started reading these who have gone off the right path. One is now into Wicca, The other started reading a them age 7 when the books first started coming out. It especially did not help that both had cafeteria Catholic parents of the "well, I would personally neber have an abortion - but.....support a woman's right to choose " sorts. Why take a chance?
I think the real issue isn't so much the movies, tv, music we listen to, it's whether or not we are morally strong enough to separate the sin from the entertainment. Which that starts with knowing our Catholic faith. If watching Harry Potter makes you feel like "it's ok to lie to achieve a good" or even worse "I want to check out magic for myself", then absolutely that is a problem. Why? Because you are not strong enough in your faith to resist the TEMPTATION that exists in ALL OF THESE MEDIUMS. But if you can watch Harry Potter as strictly imaginary, fantasy films, and not take any "truths" from them, then you will be fine. The problem IS with children though, they are a lot more suspetable to these temptations. So IF you are going to watch them, maybe talk with your kids about the problems you see within the films. It perhaps (like Father said) perhaps avoid them all together. Again the REAL issue is being strong in your faith. Know your faith, learn your faith, then silly things like movies, tv, or music won't be able to touch you spiritually.

I'm not sure if Fr. Donald Calloway has read the Harry Potter books or not. Admittedly, Harry does lie a lot but overwhelmingly his actions are righteous. In the final book, for example, Harry refuses to use the killing curse- even on Lord Voldemort- and the themes of good vs. evil pervade all seven books
I agree with everything he's pointing out. It's starts with parents. Filter the smut out for your children or they will turn to smut themselves. I was channel surfacing trying to find something to watch because I couldn't sleep and I came across "Two broke girls" what has this country come to? This is disgusting garbage. I don't even call this entertainment. If you want your children to become garbage feed them this. 30 seconds of this and I turned the TV off. Very subtle are the things that lead to a dead cold heart. Very subtle are the things that leave the soul so hungry we lose our hope and stand on the opinion of others. You can try and justify it however you like as the reason you like it, we are always attracted to sin, but those movies don't feed the soul only tire the senses even more. Give your kids a chance and keep them from it and yourself to.
Though I see the point he is wanting to make, I am not sure that I can agree with Father Calloway. I think the story is a pretty fair illustration of Ephesians 6:12 - of the forces of evil and the forces of good which do battle in this world, of the choices we must make and I think if anything the effect of the story would turn children away from the forces of evil... seeing nothing desirable therein, but much to be desired in the heroism, sacrifice, and self-control demonstrated by Harry, and in the courage and loyalty of his friends.
Major problem: I know at least two people who were lead astray, both raised in nominal Catholic families who were really enchanted by the sorcery bits. One has become a wiccan, thinking there are "good" witches. A girl of almost 30 who I know started reading the books at 7. Totally into HP. By age 16-17 she was "pro-choice." I have a second cousin, who runs a book store which specializes in the occult. (that one was raised protestant.) Also fell for HP. Fr. is quite right. Satan is very subtle. Those not firm in the faith can easily be enticed. Why take a chance? Particularly if 60% of the spells are used by wiccans, etc. Why give the devil any chance to use use these spells as a conduit? Particularly a child who has no firm foundation? Book 6 and 7 are particularly dark. Best avoid. Also, Polar Express was written by an atheist, and apparently he openly crow's how the movie introduces children to an atheistic out look. Personally I haven't seen it, frankly the preview made me uncomfortable and it felt creepy. I was only some years later I found out about the author's beliefs. Probably if you do an on line search, you can find sound arguments from good Christian who can point out particular flaws. But big caution on that one too.
As noble as it is to strive to be a saint, I think there are much worse things out there for children than the Harry Potter phenomenon. Do we keep them from dressing up on Halloween? Or is it wrong to let them read Batman, and the Avengers? How much of the modern world do we need to keep from our kids? So Harry Potter is junk food, but so is the Hunger Games, and virtually everything else.

my daughter wanted to read and watch this series, I told her no and I knew christians were warned about this show, my daughter I found out yrs later she watched it at her friends house, as a parent I can only do so much, kids will do things anyway, I tried to tell her the reason why I said no to her, but I had to be simple about it

I think that if you're going to allow your children to read the HP books, you should read them yourselves first and then be involved with your child as they are reading the stories. I think that children should have a firm basis in their faith before they start reading books like these. I agree with those who say that the HP books illustrate valuable lessons for Catholics, but someone without a firm foundation in the Faith could easily get off on the wrong track without guidance.

Yes, I know of two people who started reading these who have gone off the right path. One is now into Wicca, The other started reading a them age 7 when the books first started coming out. It especially did not help that both had cafeteria Catholic parents of the "well, I would personally neber have an abortion - but.....support a woman's right to choose " sorts. Why take a chance?
I think the real issue isn't so much the movies, tv, music we listen to, it's whether or not we are morally strong enough to separate the sin from the entertainment. Which that starts with knowing our Catholic faith. If watching Harry Potter makes you feel like "it's ok to lie to achieve a good" or even worse "I want to check out magic for myself", then absolutely that is a problem. Why? Because you are not strong enough in your faith to resist the TEMPTATION that exists in ALL OF THESE MEDIUMS. But if you can watch Harry Potter as strictly imaginary, fantasy films, and not take any "truths" from them, then you will be fine. The problem IS with children though, they are a lot more suspetable to these temptations. So IF you are going to watch them, maybe talk with your kids about the problems you see within the films. It perhaps (like Father said) perhaps avoid them all together.
Again the REAL issue is being strong in your faith. Know your faith, learn your faith, then silly things like movies, tv, or music won't be able to touch you spiritually.

I'm not sure if Fr. Donald Calloway has read the Harry Potter books or not. Admittedly, Harry does lie a lot but overwhelmingly his actions are righteous. In the final book, for example, Harry refuses to use the killing curse- even on Lord Voldemort- and the themes of good vs. evil pervade all seven books
I agree with everything he's pointing out. It's starts with parents. Filter the smut out for your children or they will turn to smut themselves. I was channel surfacing trying to find something to watch because I couldn't sleep and I came across "Two broke girls" what has this country come to? This is disgusting garbage. I don't even call this entertainment. If you want your children to become garbage feed them this. 30 seconds of this and I turned the TV off. Might as well read a good book better yet pray till I fall asleep. Good luck parents.

Very subtle are the things that lead to a dead cold heart. Very subtle are the things that leave the soul so hungry we lose our hope and stand on the opinion of others.
You can try and justify it however you like as the reason you like it, we are always attracted to sin, but those movies don't feed the soul only tire the senses even more.
Give your kids a chance and keep them from it and yourself to.

and I think if anything the effect of the story would turn children away from the forces of evil... seeing nothing desirable therein, but much to be desired in the heroism, sacrifice, and self-control demonstrated by Harry, and in the courage and loyalty of his friends.

Major problem: I know at least two people who were lead astray, both raised in nominal Catholic families who were really enchanted by the sorcery bits. One has become a wiccan, thinking there are "good" witches. A girl of almost 30 who I know started reading the books at 7. Totally into HP. By age 16-17 she was "pro-choice." I have a second cousin, who runs a book store which specializes in the occult. (that one was raised protestant.) Also fell for HP. Fr. is quite right. Satan is very subtle. Those not firm in the faith can easily be enticed. Why take a chance? Particularly if 60% of the spells are used by wiccans, etc. Why give the devil any chance to use use these spells as a conduit? Particularly a child who has no firm foundation? Book 6 and 7 are particularly dark. Best avoid. Also, Polar Express was written by an atheist, and apparently he openly crow's how the movie introduces children to an atheistic out look. Personally I haven't seen it, frankly the preview made me uncomfortable and it felt creepy. I was only some years later I found out about the author's beliefs. Probably if you do an on line search, you can find sound arguments from good Christian who can point out particular flaws. But big caution on that one too.

As noble as it is to strive to be a saint, I think there are much worse things out there for children than the Harry Potter phenomenon. Do we keep them from dressing up on Halloween? Or is it wrong to let them read Batman, and the Avengers? How much of the modern world do we need to keep from our kids? So Harry Potter is junk food, but so is the Hunger Games, and virtually everything else.
+Aestro Ai Halloween is a satanic feast. Many children dissapear in those days, that are sacrificed to Satan. Dressing your children as demons, vampires and witches is demonic.
