It is a bit annoying that the head developers of open source micropython keep on selling us pyboards on every talk. Their mixing between open source and business seems unhealthy to me, especially when Damien George starts calling Adafruit and other boards companies his "ennemies". This will inevitably create tensions and more versions of mycropython that we need.

Open source doesn't mean free. That's a common misconception. Feel free to stop watching micropython videos then if is so unhealthy to you.
so do you have the equipment to develop your own boards? pay the $4 bucks and start experimenting - nothing wrong with that
