  • The Similan Islands is an archipelago in the Andaman Sea about 60 km (1.5 hour boat ride) off the coast of Khao Lak, in southern Thailand. It is the maritime border between India and Thailand. Closed to tourists from May to October for conservative, all the islands are surrounded by crystal clear waters, framed by granite rock formations and spectacular coral reefs. The marine life around the Islands is unmatched in Thailand and the region.
We did a snorkel and explore day-trip out of Khao Lak. Picked up from the hotel at 6:15 were on the water by 7:30 and pulling into the first white beach by 9:00. We climbed to the top of Sail Rock for an even better view of this stunning island chain. While perusing the beach, because the water was so clear and shallow, I was able to spot a school parrotfish swimming a few yards away. We then headed to our first snorkel spot that did not disappoint with a great diversity of fish. It was really surprising how many species were in one location. We then grabbed lunch, walked the nature trail, saw two monitor lizards, and took an unofficial snorkel opportunity resulting in the spotting of a giant barracuda. The thing was massive. We then headed to our next snorkel spot, again seeing amazing fish in the clearest water ever before returning back to Khao Lak. The underwater shots turned out really good due to the fantastic visibility. It was truly a perfect all-around day with something for everyone: snorkeling, hiking, views, nature, beach, and an amazing your guide named JJ to bring it all together.
