- Back in the 1950s, shopping malls started popping up everywhere and quickly became the heartbeat of American consumer culture. Malls turned into the town square for many places, they were the go-to spots for families and, let’s not forget, the ultimate hangout for American teens.
By the time the 70s and 80s rolled around, malls were at their peak. Movies like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" captured all the fun and frenzy of mall culture, making food courts the cool place to grab a bite.
While the classic American mall may be on the decline, some food court favorites like Sbarro and Panda Express are finding new ways to stay in the game, rethinking how they reach today’s shoppers. As these brands keep fighting the good fight in malls and shopping centers, let’s take a moment to remember the iconic mall restaurants that didn't make it.

I'm so glad I had the mall experience instead of Amazon door delivery .. .
I remember Kmart had a food court with icees and ither things. And Target had popcorn and soda
Ditto 💯💕
I miss orange julius. Grew up at the mall in the 80s/early 90s. Pizza dogs, a soft pretzel, and an apple pie julius. Good times. I'd give anything to go back.
Britling Cafeteria in Birmingham was a Sunday staple. The term " beat the Baptists to Britlings" was comically used by Methodists to lobby for shorter church sermons.
Orange Julius. Delicious drink and loved their chili burger
I miss Morrison's. they always had a long line at lunch time.
Im a 90s kid from Alabama, where some of these were from. However ive never even heard of ANY of these...
Growing up in the 80's in California, I always loved Hof's Brau. My wife and I still reminisce about the roast beef that they'd carve off the bone for you. Hofbraus in general are almost nowhere to be found these days.
The only one I recognized here on the east coast was Woolworth's.
Anyone remember Wyatt's cafeteria? Loved their Egg Plant Casserole & pecan Deight pie.....
Kenny Rogers Roasters is still big in Asia.
My uncle and mom worked at Britling downtown. Mom was a waitress. Uncle was hired after the boss asked if he could read.
Harvest Houses were not all cafeterias, despite what this video says. The ones I went to were regular sit-down restaurants with waitresses.
I'm originally from the Chicagoland area and I only remember a handful of these places.
I remember Carousel -- later A&W Hot Dogs and More -- being one of the last chains (not just restaurants) in a dying mall. Upper Midwest.
Miss Farrell’s it was great for bday parties 🎈 😊
I still miss Britling's in Memphis 😢. They didn't close until 1992 or 1993 in Memphis.
I worked at a Farrell's for 2 years in the early 1980s. It was in a mall in Murray, Utah. The mall remains but the Farrell's is long gone.
I hated those stupid hats so, thanks for bringing that memory back... Not!
Anyone remember Furrs cafeteria?
There Was-A ORANGE JULIUS!@Old Oakland's-Washington&Clay St.-At Oakland, California!&I Remember IT-WELL!-Raymond 'Mike" Hong!&(Enjoy!-Everyone!-Mike!)😎👍!!!!!!!!!
I miss malls. One of my first jobs was working at the food court at the mall.
Anyone else notice that the second picture of Morrison's is a Morrison's Supermarket in the UK, and definitely not a cafeteria in the US.
Ho ho, yeah! Roar!
I remember orange julius, hot sam pretzels, Woolworth. I lived near Luvonia Mall and Westland mall, where the had Hot Sam pretzels. Lots of changes to both those malls, especially after they closed Penneys and Sears. I miss the malls like they used to be😢
Loved Farrells!
It wasn’t covered. Photo was used and I watched to the end, but nothing was said about Farrell’s.
@@garytheosophilus I saw the picture and I was just remembering the Farrells we had in our Mall when I was a child. It was such a fun place to eat. A lot of people may not remember them.
Farrell's was fun for kids but really obnoxious for adults, at least in the '70s - constant loud music and annoying loudspeaker announcements, along with the usual kiddie screams and other vocalizations.
Yes, it was the best!! I loved their candy store. And their Nickelodeon’s that they had in the entrance that you could watch while you were waiting in line.
Woolworth's and Brigham's had the best hot dogs on toasted buns.
Lum's was good too, their dogs were steamed in beer.
I think I miss Stuckeys the most!
I don't know a lot of these places. I'm American.
Orange Julius! They would put eggshells in the blender for calcium. Then they stopped.....
A reasonably priced, and with good food cafeteria back in the day would have seen many regular visits from me. Too bad for me, there simply weren't any cafeterias of any kind in my area during the years when I was regularly looking for meals out on a daily basis. Certainly, would have enjoyed that much more than the fast food I remember that I usually wound up with.
The one with the Carmel popcorn 🍿 it was 😋😋😋😋😋
Left out Kings table restaurant
Does Eddy's Loaf and Stein still exist?
Never heard of any of them except Kenny.
Great video. Wish this channel all the best.
We’re glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for the well wishes and we hope to see more of you. 😁
bro i thought this was grub lore hollow kngiht
Most of these are extremely obscure names that I - and others who've commented here - have never heard of, much less eaten at.
Those who experienced Bresler's, what was up with the flavor called "I'm Not Sure Yet?"
Hmm. I commented on this & my comment is gone now. I think it had more likes and views too.
I recognize Kenny Rogers and Orange Julius. Bui I don't recall or know of any ot the others (I live in the Pacific Northwest).
Can't say I miss any of these
It’s funny while watching this mall clip, I was eating a candy bar that has Carmel and a pretzel 🥨 inside of it, when she missioned the pretzel 🥨 company and started showing various pics of pretzels, I thought that was quite funny 😅
