      I'm curious about your opinion of house rules?
      For example in the past me and a good acquaintance played D&D with a house rule that allowed characters to be created from other Fantasy series and lore as long as there was multiple iterations of the lore for the race that are relatively consistent. So I wonder about your opinion in regards to that.

    What I, as a brand new dm who is playing with brand new players, have liked about this set so far is the explanations for everything. When my nieces wanted to try the game, I volunteered to DM for them. I found a silly one-shot adventure online and, since I’ve watched a lot of videos of people playing online and some stuff from you and others, I thought I’d be ready to help everyone. I was SOOOO wrong!
    All of us had questions while creating and playing their characters and running the game that I had no idea about and couldn’t find quick answers to online. One question literally took me 2 hours of searching online before I could find the answer!
    Luckily, everyone still had a great time and decided to try out the new starter set. Reading through it and watching the included videos have been so helpful! They’ve answered almost every question that came up in our first game, and showed me some things I should’ve done to better prepare for the game. I’m excited to try to run it this weekend.

  • @Shelfside
    @Shelfside 2 ปีที่แล้ว +131

    It’s great that this is way more tailored towards the newest of new players! I always felt that the essentials kit was almost more like a quick start for groups that already have some experience, especially because like you said there’s not much DM tips. On top of that, essentials kit has really tough encounters early on that probably require the DM to do some numbers tweaking to not demolish the party lol

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Totally! I think the EK, and the original Starter Set especially, were better suited for people who had some familiarity with a previous edition or as a player, but this new one sets of brand new DMs quite well

    • @daltigoth3970
      @daltigoth3970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The one thing the essentials kit adventure did that most other adventures don't do is that most of the encounters are written to be scalable (e.g. "1 goblin plus 1 additional goblin for every 2 characters in the party, not counting sidekicks").
      The few that are not written that way are brutal if the DM plays the monsters optimally, particularly the Talos acolytes if they start hurling lightning bolts at a party of level 3 characters and the wererats if the party doesn't have much in the way of magic at their disposal.

  • @MackeyD3

    I think the value for money in the essentials kit is what makes it the best. More dice, more rules, poster maps, lots of handouts for players, and it comes with extra content on dnd beyond.

    I give my players inspiration for showing up ready to play before or at the agreed upon time. Tangent, but I am hoping they release corresponding miniature sets. It was a missed opportunity from the prior starter set and essentials kits. Some players really benefit from being able to see representations of where things are. And at that time, it was very difficult to get the right miniatures together. It would be an easy enough play aid for them to do.

    I started playing D&D in 1980, freshman year of high school. Played for about five or six years. In grad school I got recruited by a youth group at a local library to DM. After grad school life got in the way. Now almost thirty years later, a friend’s son is interested so I’m going to DM something for father and son. I Amazoned the Stormwreck starter set and came here to see what I’m getting into. It is pleasing to know that the game still is played by people like Bob. Great video. Thank you.

    Looks like a good box set for beginners. I initially was not going to pick it up as the only reason I would have is because I thought the 80's characters were in it. But, you've changed my mind. I can see using this. Heck, my main one shot character, Larry the Lounge Wizard started in Phandelver as a sheet from the starter set and now he's a level 8 conjuration machine. Due to some minor incidents involving raising some corpses, Larry is no longer 'good'. But he still means well, dammit!

    Well I can't talk for all the people, but I'm definitely watching your reviews and absolutely not the DnD official channel ones
    I personally find the videos on the Dungeons and dragons official channel to be just not descriptive of the things you want to know about at all. Instead they talk for minutes and minutes about just some obscure lore and real world references and inspiration... probably not the juice you clicked on the video for.
    On the other hand, your videos, Bob, are just beautifully edited, even in their simple form. Plus you alway manage to cover both good and bad sides of things which i believe to be yet another demonstration of love and care for this channel, for your fans as well for new people who are just approaching dnd.
    Great video as always

    Why not all three?
    Phandelver and Icespire Peak are both in Phandalin, and Stormwreck Isle is off the coast near the High road.
    In Phandalin, there is a rumor about a lighthouse that is luring ships in to their demise, which is a perfect hook to bring the party to Stormwreck Isle, which has a harpy -- luring ships to their demise.
    I'm a first time DM and I'm going to mash all of this up into the greatest game ever played
    Most likely going to delve into "Beyond Icespire Peak" after that

    Hey Bob, nice little spoiler free review. I have been running games for a couple of decades, using the 3.5 system and plan to continue doing so. I added the Phandelver starter and Essentials kit to my toolbox, to give me a peek into what changed and to see if It was worth updating across the board. Turns out; that for me and my players, it wouldn't be. There are some additional mechanisms I like and add to enhance the quality of my games. The advantage/disadvantage mechanic for one, inspiration and temporary or situational bonuses and the ideals, bonds and flaws for role-playing. Honestly, that was brilliant for new players. I think of that as like; giving an actor, character motivation and direction for a scene. They will have a better idea, of how this person would react to a given set of circumstances. Or what they would want out of another person and suggesting what they might be willing to to get the outcome they desire. To buy or not to buy Stormwreck? I was really on the fence with this one. I'm thinking of adding it to my collection, not so much for me. But for my 14 year old daughter. Who got into the hobby a handful of months ago, to give her a starting point at DM-ing.

      @@BobWorldBuilder The only one I found was the module. 'The Sunless Citadel' which I have used to start 2 separate adventurer groups over a decade apart. It can be a bit of a wet fart to run, but it's mercifully short and can play in a weekend. If you're prepared and have a group who dungeon blitz, instead of crawl.

    Looks like these starter sets are pretty handy.
    I just started by having a friend who had some experience DM, but we had to drop that after one session, so years later, I started playing with others, most of whom were new and everyone was inexperienced, so we just used DnD Beyond and I started reading the Basic Rules, which was incredibly helpful.

    I agree with you, Bob. I also like that the new starter set is aimed towards absolute brand new people because then they don't feel obligated to go out and be the new CritRole/Stranger Things with their friend group. Young people/teens can ask for this set for holidays or birthdays and they won't feel like what they got was an abundance of jargon and get disappointed when their friends are like "this is too confusing lets do something else".
    Thanks for reviewing too!!

    I just picked up this box today. I'm a new D&D player, and have picked up the old Starter Set, the Essentials Kit, and now this Starter Set. I gotta say, I was really happy that the Essentials Kit came with a code to redeem the adventure on DNDBeyond, which then opened me up to that service. I also purchased the Player Handbook on DNDB despite also having the physical book due to that 50% off coupon. I figured that going forward, this would be something WOTC would continue, and that I'd get a code for this adventure on DNDB... was really bummed out to see there wasn't one.
    As someone who prefers physical books, but also appreciates the added benefits of DNDB, I'm really surprised they haven't implemented a redeemable code in each of their physical products. I'm surprised that they have the subscription tier that allows a DM to share every publication with their group... but then get stingy on a redeemable digital code with the physical books. People don't like paying for stuff twice, and I think it will lead to people pirating the publications more.

    • @BobWorldBuilder

    I played DnD back in the 90s (Swedish D&D Edition, från Äventyrsspel, as well as a few others, such as Eon and Kult), and have mostly only been playing cRPG's and such since, but I honestly thought about getting into TTRPG's again. I looked around and saw an online retailer here selling these starter kits, and I honestly thought the D&D Starter Set, the 5th Essentials Kit and Starter Set Dragons of Stormwreck Isle was three different sets that basically included "base rules, + different things", sort of.
    Thank you for the heads up that it's basically just "starter set 1.0", "starter set 1.1" and "starter set 1.2+ Stormwreck adventure"! Going by my currency, that cuts the purchase cost down from 707kr down to 229kr!
    If I was to invest a bit heavier into this, would you say Stormwreck Isle + D&D Core Rulebook Gift Set + D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set would be overkill, meaning I "should" just buy one of these or perhaps even two, or would getting all three sets be good?
    Eventually I aim to get "everything" bought, if nothing else than to get a shelf of D&D going to read from for my own enjoyment, even if I never actually start playing with people again, but getting duplicates, or "old edition+new edition" seems like a waste, and if SwI, Core and Expansion basically have the same thing, I might want to spend money on something else, like terrain kits.
