I honestly would have made the same decision to back out. It's hard to know sometimes, and you have to go with your gut instinct. It sucks for sure you lost some meat, but you can't predict what might happen out there, it is what it is. Great hunt and content man👊🏻 Congrats to both of you!

Thank you for watching the video! I never would’ve expected that to happen, the kill shot hit the heart no guts at all. We also had freezing temps at night so I felt confident coming back in the morning to recover the buck. I did end up getting a lot of meat off the buck, lost the hind and the back strap off one side, got everything else.

A good real hunt as always ! Your SAFETY is way more important on any hunt. So in my opinion you did the right thing. Yes I may have gotten there sooner in the morning but I'm sure the out come would have been the same. We are not the only predators in the woods thats for sure. Congrats on a hard hunt once again.

Thanks for watching again jack! Yea I learned a tough lesson, I honestly thought the buck would be fine in those cold temps over night. I salvaged every bit of meat off the buck I could. He turned into some awesome breakfast sausage and brautwurst. Just keeping it real, hopefully some others hunters will learn something from this experience too!

Maybe next time try to at least get in the same zip code as the deer, or don’t take the shot.

We were at the last flat bench, clearly missed the first shot. Second shot was in the heart, I practice shooting all year. I wouldn’t take the shot if I wasn’t confident in my ability. Thanks for watching 👊

Well, in the video I watched he's 50% at distance. luckily a clean miss on the first attempt but easily could have been a crippling shot and 10 minutes before dark across that canyon, good luck turning that thing up. At least the wolf got a free meal! I'm not opposed to long range shots and good on him for showing the outcome, hopefully a learning experience. You always have the option to not shoot.

Awesome hunt, i love those idaho otc tags! Ive had wolves come in on carcasses there before too but was lucky and had the meat hanging above and went back the next day for the meat. Better to wait until the next day than snapping a leg back there hiking in the dark. Good looking bucks

I don't even know where to begin. Did you guys sleep in or what? Sun had been up for a few hours before you even get to where you shot. But at least you got a clip for a gohunt shout out. I don't know what you'd expect was going to happen. Don't shoot right at dark if you're too scared to hike over and recover the animal. 12 hours at least of darkness and you guys sleep in? No concern of spoilage getting over to the buck later in the morning with it baking in the sun?

Buck was on a north slope, in the shade definitely wasn’t baking in the sun for hours. Meat was nice and cool to the touch. We’ve packed out many animals in the dark elk, deer, and bears (you’ll see that in a lot my other videos) Over the years I’ve learned that the animal is fine over night as long as it wasn’t gut shot which it wasn’t. In my opinion it wasn’t a smart decision to navigate that terrain in the dark. Unfortunately a wolf found the deer, again never would’ve expected to see a wolf in a high pressure area like this one. If I could do it all over again i would’ve hiked over there in the dark and packed the deer out. Unfortunately hind site is 20/20, if I hunt that area again any animal harvested will come out same day! Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching the video. Good luck this fall 👊

@@mtn2coast_outdoors first, thanks for sharing the video. I’m a lifelong Idaho resident, We have harvested many, many elk and mule deer. We learned early on when we started out that you simply cannot leave one overnight. The first elk I ever killed, we gutted it (before gutless method days) and let it lay it overnight. It was -10F with 15mph winds, at first light the next morning the bottom side was still warm. The top side was frozen so solid it was damn near impossible to work up 😂 Just trying to save you a lesson, as you will come to the same conclusion as you gain more experience. But thanks again for sharing the vid.

Great video and memories I'm sure. Nice job! First suggestion: Always carry two headlamps in the day pack. Second suggestion: Get the hide off asap (with said headlamp) as it insulates the core. Get the meat off the bone as well. Don't waste energy packing out bones as this is where the heat is. If you like "gamey" or bone sour meat then disregard this suggestion. There are many videos and threads on this too. The internal temp will not drop like the external temp for obvious reasons. Even if the critter didn't get the meat, that internal warm temp 12 or more hours after death is not desirable. If F and G witnessed the "shoot and head to camp for the night" action, they might have cited you for something. Right from page 95 of this years regs, "No person shall wound or kill any big game animal without making a reasonable effort to retrieve it and reduce it to possession." We have learned most of this the hard way. Also, blur out the license plate to be safe.
