Not too bad. Id like to see the phos down around 0.01-0.02 with that nitrate load. Preferably though the nitrates up to about 5 and the phos down to 0.04. Your SPS will thank you :)
Really well explained, thankyou. At what point should I start testing for magnesium, calcium etc? Keen to get corals as soon as possible but how do I know it is ready? All my normal numbers are stable as per your explanation, ph & alkalinity reflect this.
You can start testing Mag/Cal now. If the tank has finished the nitrogen cycle and is either near the end or finished with the ugly phase you can start adding corals! Thanks for watching! Dont forget to join our FB group and post pics!!
right now im at 21 nitrates and phos at zero (trying to raise it up). Alk is 8.4, calcium 410 to 420, My mag dropped from 1310 to 1200 before my water change. I reduced the time on my algae scrubber from 12 hours to 5 over a period of time to help with phos but no luck. I only dose maganese for my gonis 1ml every other day keeps it pretty good.
Good plan, keep managing those params! Thanks for watching. Reef Roids are packed full of phosphates. You might consider broadcasting 1/4tspn once a week to see if that helps!
Finally someone said that the Redfield coefficient applies to phytoplankton and not coral reefs. It seems that most people fetishize this information beyond measure. Bravo.
This is really helpful information, thank you for putting this together! I wanted to drop my parameters so I could have some advice. Tank up since October, transferred inhabitants in from pico tank that had been up since July. I struggled with a small Dino’s outbreak and I began to dose stump remover as it was what I had on hand after my neonitro ran out. I was also dosing neophos. Was trying to hit 10/.1 to help with the Dino’s because I was bottomed out. Currently struggling with GHA and think my magnesium is too high? Have since lowered nutrients suspecting they are causing the GHA growth. Reef crystals mixed to 35ppt Nitrate 5 Phosphate 0.03 or less Alk 7 Calcium 425-450 Mag 1545-1560 pH 8.2 My corals look happy and fluffy for the most part, have a blasto merletti that won’t grow a new head just keeps getting wider/inflated I thought about raising alk to 8, but most online say you must dose alk and calcium in equal parts or else you will swing the other down (which I think makes sense reading some randy Holmes Farley articles except my calcium is already at the upper limit)
I like the idea of all for reef, but I would be worried it would balloon my high magnesium already higher! Was thinking of making diy 2 part, but wanting to see if water changes can keep maintaining the alkalinity by itself Have been using LFS RODI but everything I need to make my own water is in the mail. I suspect their water is not 0 tds which could be the root cause
I think you are right on track with what you're doing. In my experience higher mag tends to ward off algae rather than grow it. Keep in mind GHA can also drive fuel from lighting and phosphates bound up in the rocks(untestable phosphates). Your levels look fine to me right now where the tank is at, but if you want more growth you might bump alkalinity to 8.5ish. You may also wanna bolster the clean up crew. Turbo snails, margarit snails, pincushion urchins, and tiger conchs go ham on GHA. If its really really bad a dolabella seahare might help too. Personally I dont use Reef Crystals as I find it incredibly inconsistent bucket to bucket. Are you rolling and mixing the bucket around before using it? If not, do that. Salt can stratify inside the bucket leading to lower parameters at the top, and higher ones at the bottom. That might be why the alk is a tad low. RC usually mixes 12+ dkh Alk, so Im surprised yours is where it is. That said if you wanna raise Alkalinity only with no effect on other parameters, food grade baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) will accomplish that. There is a calculator at this link which will help determine how much to use. Keep it below 0.5dkh increase per day. www.bulkreefsupply.com/reef-calculator/alkalinity-calculator-reef
Good question! One thing that will help is weekly 10% water changes if you aren't already doing them. Make sure you are doing weekly maintenance on any mechanical filters/socks/etc. Keeping things rinsed out and ensuring nothing that is trapped can break down back into dissolved organics. This begins to happen at about day 4-5 of things being trapped so weekly cleaning removes those detritus and keeps them from going back into the water. Aside from that think about anything that happens to the tank that might be changing things. Dosing supplements etc. Hope that helps!
@@reefrookies yeah im already ding that the 10% water charge. Im running it know for almost 2 years. I clean/newones in the filter wadding but i have also bioballs, do i need to clean them 2 everey week? Not i remove all my good bacteria? And What kind off sup do give ?
My tank fluctuates between 8.0 and 8.15 daily. I wanna get it up a little higher to 8.3, but its not imperative right now for me to do that. I had to add a CO2 scrubber to get it where it is now, before it was 7.7-7.8 daily. Thanks for watching!
When it’s true what you saying, then it’s this a super video 👍. My water parameters are no3 25,po4 0,1. Kh9, cal 420 and mg 1430. I have cyano or dyno’s. Grtz Christ
Join my FB group, Reef Rookies with Logan, and post some pics. Tag me (Logan Brouillette), and Ill take a look at what you have to try and ID. Thats the first step. Your parameters dont look terrible. Nitrates are a bit high, recommend water changes to drop them.
I have a 125 gallon tank and my nitrates and phosphates are not balancing. They are .12 phosphate and 1.1 nitrate. My tank is mostly softies and LPS , i have one SPS coral
You may need to reduce filtration, skimming, or water changes and let the No3 build for a bit. Keep tabs on phosphates though. If it begins going up as well you may need to also use a phos remover too.
You're doing a fantastic job! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
I have 0,11 Po4 and 25 No3(been 35 so im on the right track). Is there anyway of lowering nitrate except waterchange since im in the middle of Flux RX treatment and cant do a waterchange? Less feeding ofc but is that enough or can i get any chemical to lower nitrates? My Mg is atleast 1500(Test has a max of 1500), Ca 510 so i lowered the dosing. Alk is at 8,62, should i try to raise it a bit? I have Some Pavona and Blastomussa but not much, rest is Palys and lots of soft corals.
With what you have in the tank I wouldn't try to raise Alk. Its good for the corals you have. Preferably we get those nitrates down a bit. Doing that at the same time as running FluxRx might be hard though. Do you have a skimmer? If not, that will help after the FRX treatment is done. If its a well established tank you might add some Microbe Lift special blend. Dont smell it, youll gag, but it does a great job converting nitrates to nitrogen gas effectively removing them. You might also look into setting up a sulfur denitrator to lower Nitrates. Im spitballing, but those are some ideas.
See I had that issue and I’m correcting it now Cal was way high 540 Alk was 8.2 and mag was 1260……now I’m sitting at Alk 9.2 ..Cal 450 Mag 1360 …I noticed a difference just in how everything looks Phos sits 0.06 Nitrates sits at 6.6

Excellent! relative Balance Solutions, needs to be talked about more and earlier on in understanding the whys of Reef Keeping. great Video.
Thanks, it’s definitely one of the most important topics! Thanks for watching!
Greatly explained, good work, much appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it! Keep that tank in tip top shape!
As always great video brother. I think this one is going to help a lot of brand new hobbyists.
I’m stoked you liked it! I hope it can help some new folks.
Great video, was such a eye-opener thank you . Please keep them coming

Great Video, Nobody talks about this balance in reef tank (Except Mike Paletta)
Everyone overlooks this Ratio Balance
