    I own same Sansui and Marantz 2252b, both work on ar15 speakers. Sansui is cleaner and better in middrange and treble, but Marantz is killer on bass and dynamic. Classical and jazz music I prefer on Sansui, but rockandroll on Marantz.
    Best wishes!

    I prefer the Sansui (#1) much more. It was clearer, had more mids, more detail retrieval, more fine texture of instruments, and more ambiance and natural decay of notes. With the Marantz, (#2), the mids sounded recessed, less detailed, less open, and the bass tonality sounded bad. The bass sounded too warm and made the speakers sound like wooly-sounding boxes. If it were me, I might adjust the bass up on the Sansui a little, but other than that, the Sansui was the winner for me.

    Even. Though I’ve owned my Marantz 2238 for over 50 years listening to this comparison the Marantz is just a warmer rendition!

  • @jonathanvanier

    The Sansui's mids are warm and enjoyable, but to the point where they dominate the sound. The Marantz feel more controlled and precise, but comparatively lacks the wow effect. Overall I prefer the Sansui, but I wonder if I wouldn't prefer the Marantz for long listening sessions.

    Always interesting those tests!
    I know Sansui as open in the midrange, lots of details, sometimes maybe too much midrange. Don't know Marantz as well, but still I was right about Sansui was the "1" in the test.
    Both are good, but maybe the Marantz is too much "loudness sound", compared to the Sansui.
    I listened to this over a NAD D3045, and a pair of Klipsch RB 52 - (that's my PC-speaker setup)

    Like usual, the Marantz, even through TH-cam, has much more clarity in the bass and mid-bass range, while having extremely good mids and highs... It does sound like the Sansui has the treble turned up some but I'm probably wrong. They both sound fantastic in their own way and I would happily choose either of them. My favorite would have to be the Marantz, though. Great comparison, Andrew! Cheers and happy new year :)

  • @keefy6
    @keefy6 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    ..I thinks it's pretty clear as well...
    Like most things, it's down to taste. For my own, the Marantz seems to "color" or mute instrument-sound when played back to my ears --> when I'm listening to music I want to hear as high, medium or low that instrument creates its sound. It also seems to nearly make some frequencies disappear?; maybe this is what those who own Marantz amps prefer while describing the sound as "warm" I'd prefer accurate and the Sansui to me is "clearly" more accurate. Similar to when a monitor is calibrated to ISF spec and at first, the picture may seem softer but in actuality it's simply more accurate in hue, color temp, sharpness etc. and the user is used to seeing color/hue really bright and contrast/sharpness really high.
    Tony btw, i used a few other soundest videos you created to decide on and make the purchase of my Sansui - was looking for various Marantz, Pioneer (I own one too) receivers. In my real-life testing, like these videos, the sound reproduced in comparison to your videos are completely similar in results. Thanks for the great videos!

    I will take number two to be my home unit.... number one is a little bit compressed electrically, has more apparent treble volume due to generation of harmonics..sound is more distorted, more unrealistic, but has some charm that attracts the vast majority of audiophiles.... i will keep number two to myself without any doubt...number two, in my opinion is vastly superior unit.

I like my lows a little heavier. #1 sounds good too me but it sounds a little shallow. There are aspects that I like on #1 over #2 but my ears like #2 more. I would have to say #2 is the 2238b.

    You should setup a poll on these videos. It is really easy to do in the creator studio. There are videos on TH-cam on how to do it. As far as the test goes, Sansui has more emphasis on mids. That is really the only difference I can tell between the two of these. It's like Sansui designed the mid circuit to always be at +5 instead of flat to give the receiver more clarity.

      @@ravithompson1082 it is mate. Its easy as that. It all depends on your ear. Why you think the market is here for? Fussy fussy ears moaning about this beat that beat. This mid time this trumpet or whatever sounds better this way. Buy a nice CD player from Marantz, a nice amp, come nice speakers and listen to CD the artist and producer intended for you to hear it. Don't forget your set up is nowhere near the £100' s of thousands Of a recording studio where the mix it and finalise it in a CD. It a vinyl.

      @@ravithompson1082 Normally what u play back from a cd at pre set sound is what you're supposed to be listening at. Its these fussy "audiophilles" that makes it complicated. Honestly treble mid way or 3/4 way down and the bass 3/4 up is the sweet spot. The vocals are clear....the mids are nice and u get the sweet bass elevated if u are in to bass. Otherwise leave it as middle way normal. I also like to switch my am in to "hall" mode so everything echos. It sometimes with certain tracks like hip hop music makes u feel like your listening to a concert. Its a whole different experience just for fun. I do this with a lot of 2pac songs. Try it.

    Marantz has the looks the Sansui has the sound! I have had many vintage receivers including top of the line from each manufacturer and my favorite is Sansui. Marantz tried to produce tube sound which didn't work very well in those days with the components they had. Marantz sound is smooth but lacks detail and clarity in my opinion. Once I went to commercial seperates not to break bank it was game over for all of the receivers. I felt bad for wasting so much time and money dabbling with vintage receivers after I discovered noticeable sonic advantages of separate power amps and preamps. It was an interesting journey though. I hope you can learn something from me and save yourself the journey unless that's what you are looking for. We only have so much time in this dimension, use it wisely! Lol, Cheers!

  • @donbustoarigato2997
    @donbustoarigato2997 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It seems to me that the sound levels are NOT perfectly matched. The Sansui is LOUDER, and as psycho-acoustical testing shows, the average listener will usually pick or prefer the LOUDER sounding piece.
    The Sansui sounds a little cleaner or more detailed but it is also more trebly as a result. I am NOT ready to call this test yet.
    Marantz units typically have a "darker" sound, a softer sound, and it is sometimes necessary to boost the treble.
    Marantz units also have a strange "synergy" with some speakers that highlight their strengths better. One such speaker is the Polk Monitor series from the late ''70s and early '80s. I have a Marantz 2265 which is to die for with a set of Polk Monitor 10As.
    The other thing that is funny is that Sansuis have MORE than one sound signature. Your unit sounds more like a G series. Whereas the much earlier 5000A sounds a little closer to a Marantz, and then there is the vaunted Sansui AU-717 integrated (dual power supply, four large filter caps, etc.) People rave about the 717, yet it is a tad "dark", certainly much darker than the Sansui TA-500! But that 717 sound has also been described as very pleasing, musical and tube-like!
    So what do you think? I suspect that the Magnat speakers you are using are a little HOT up top and accentuated by the Sansui, such a sound can get quite FATIGUING after a number of hours. And, I feel it probably does. Whereas you can listen to a Marantz forever-precisely because it does roll off the top end some!
    Potato, PO TATO? lol

    And even live, the test will only have value if a good signal source is used. At least a good CD or SACD Player. Analog source would be ideal.
    Using a computer or worse, such as a cell phone or MP3 player, also totally compromises any subjective test, given the poor sonic quality of these devices.

In addition to microphone pickup, converted to digital and then to mp3's trash, transmitted over the internet with compression, amplified by portable radio circuits from computer junk boxes and even more trash speakers, these are two low-quality receivers, Being among the cheapest of these factories .. And there are people who have the petulance to say that noticed difference in the separation between channels. Unbelievable how ignorant people are in audio and electronics.
