    The bear didn't even seem like a real, mortal animal by the end. Instead it seemed like one of the legends of an evil spirit taking on the form of a wild beast. I can't imagine how terrifying it must have seemed to the poor villagers.

      the indigenous Ainu people of that very region revered those bears as the most powerful of all the gods, who took animal form when entering our world. Even their word for "bear" was just "god." With a story like this, it's easy to see their logic.

      This is EXACTLY why predators that kill humans are hunted down. With VERY few exceptions like Nile crocodiles, animals don't see humans as food. Once a predator learns that humans can be eaten, they're going to keep doing it. Any wild predator that kills/eats a human must, I repeat *MUST* be killed. Because they WILL do it again.
      Around 1900~, there was a plague in India and a ton of people died. Bodies were left for scavengers. A lot of big cats in the area scavenged the corpses and learned humans are edible. Then they started hunting live ones. Because even just scavenging corpses can make them learn humans = food. *Thousands* died. One tiger, known as the Champawat Tiger, killed 436 people. To this day it holds the record for most human fatalities by an animal. It, and the other maneating big cats, were eventually hunted and killed by famed hunter Jim Corbett.
      Everytime a bear or cougar or something kills someone, they hunt it down and people bitch and moan. "It's just being an animal" "It doesn't deserve to die" "That's not fair" It doesn't matter what's fair or who deserves what. It's a public safety issue. "Getting a taste for human" sounds like something out of a bad horror movie but it is very, VERY real.

    I lived in Hokkaido for four years and saw a couple of bears from a distance. I was told this story for the first time on either my second or third day, but I heard it many times after that as well. It's very well known and often repeated around the prefecture, and people do not take any chances with bear sightings- as soon as one was spotted, there were notices in the newspaper, signs up at all the schools, parks, and public buildings, and my boss called me to warn me to look outside carefully before going out to my car when there was a sighting near town.

      I live in the Appalachians, an area kinda known for "North Carolina Belly-Draggers" a local tendency of the brown bears to be just that big... Many DO practically drag their bellies on the ground...
      It's no big wonder that I'm NEVER EVER out alone without some means of self defense, and usually more than one. It's not a regular thing to find sign (like scat and tracks) near the house, but it happens from time to time... I don't go out of my way to track anything down without intentions of eating the son of a b*tch, but I don't plan on being someone else's dinner either....
      Mr. Bear's gonna figure out REAL QUICK that this ain't no healthy place for a bear... if I have anything to say about it. haha... I don't blame your neighbors in Hokkaido for their attitudes about it. ;o)

Preferably something capable of putting down the bear instantly or crippling it relatively easily... SO think 12g 000, though I frequently work with Tokarev, since the penetration is damn decent (hits like a cannon) for a .30 cal-ish midsize handgun.
      Animals are the one point where I make the "warning shot" exception. NONE of them like that loud sharp sound... BUT even as a warning, I shoot something specifically, like a tree, fence-post, etc... Even with the shotgun, it's best to KNOW where the projectiles go rather than "randomly rain" them down just wherever. ;o)

Just imagine being on your way home thinking of what you might have for dinner and spending time with your family, and then you get home and walk in thinking everything's fine, then he picks up his child and has the slow realization of what has occurred. Bears can apparently socialize to humans in large groups, for the most part. There are certain areas where there's practically never bear attacks, even with a lot of human-bear contact. Yosemite National Park is such an area, where black bear attacks practically never happen (though they can go for your food). I've seen various videos of brown bears in Alaska getting close to people while not attacking. In many areas you wouldn't want to get close to them, though.

    I couldn't help but to chuckle at the end of the Frank Lloyd Wright story with the guy trying to commit suicide by drinking hydrochloric acid. He likely didn't know it, but that's basically what stomach acid is. You can even buy HCl pills to use as an aid for digestion, and it can take quite a lot just to trigger mild heartburn. I pretty much guessed his outcome before the story got to it.

    • @orange5591
      @orange5591 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Doesn't hydrochloric acid leave severe chemical burns especially when you drink it?
      Well, ofc, depends on percentage of HCl, maybe it was diluted

    • @Nareimooncatt
      @Nareimooncatt ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@orange5591 it may in the mouth, but I doubt that would be life threatening if drinking and swallowing. When you get acid reflux, the soreness in your throat is essentially that chemical burn (which is often due to weak stomach acid, not having too much). But you can get HCL supplements in 600+mg pills and I've taken up to 4 at once with no side effects. People with really weak acid may need even more, but that's something to discuss between you and your care provider. Being in pill form does prevent it from burning your mouth and throat.
      The way it was explained to me by a nutritional therapist is you increase the dose over time until you just start to feel a mild warmth, similar to heartburn. The purpose is to not only increase digestion, but also to signal the opening at the top of your stomach to close. That's why weak acid can cause heartburn, and taking heartburn meds can be counterproductive. You think it's from the acid being too strong, so you weaken the already weakened acid, starting a downward spiral that leads to more heartburn and worse digestion.

      While it's true that it is naturally in the stomach, it's not in a concentrated form as on bottle but in a very diluted form thanks to a simultanous secretion of sodium bicarbonate, buffering the acid.
      In concentrated form, however, it is one of the most corrosive acids in existence.
      From Wikipedia:

    Bears are freaky. I grew up in a rural area, and my dad built a compost bin for our garden out of steel rebar. Just a week or two after we'd started using it, my dad woke up to go to work and saw that the bin had been smashed open, and in one spot the rebar was completely twisted over and folded in half. You'd think that a grid of steel rebar would keep a bear out, but nope. The same bear smashed through my neighbor's garage door a week or so after that to get to their garbage. My neighbor saw it a few times and tried to scare it off by firing blanks at it, but this bear just turned and looked at him. It hung out in our area for like a month, then my neigbbor- who had young kids at the time- decided he'd had enough of constantly being on edge and killed it (even though that was technically illegal). That was a scary time, I'm glad my neighbor took matters into his own hands and got rid of it.

    I don't think the bear story from Japan could happen today. Rogue bears, wild boar, and other potentially dangerous wild animals are handled by the Japan Hunters Association. As the rural population in Japan shrinks, and especially given the reduced human activity during the pandemic, incursions of problematic wildlife into rural Japanese towns and smaller cities has become quite common. These hunters are usually older local men who have lived and hunted in the area all their lives. They know the land like the back of their hands, and they are crack shots who have top-tier hunting and camping gear.
    They're extremely good at what they do. I've seen them in action on Japanese news programs many times. Japan doesn't have animal control officers, and local police usually defer to the hunters, who typically are better shots and know more about wildlife than they do. Once the hunters get on the track of an animal, they invariably trap it or kill it within a day or two.
    There's no way that a bear like the one in this story would be able to repeatedly attack a village in Japan today. The hunters would track it down and shoot it dead during or after its first attack. More likely, they would become aware of it beforehand by spotting its tracks around the area, and help relocate it to a less-populated area if it seemed especially large or threatening to humans.

      Only old hunters and rural population shrinking means that at some point there won't be any experienced hunter left and if their rank is replenished, like in the rest of japan there will be far less because of the population aging

    I live in the central Florida area. All of Florida sits on a maze of limestone caverns filled with water. The water typically helps maintain the limestone structures. However, in some places like Pasco county, they pump too much water from certain areas of the aquifer. When this happens, insufficient water exists to bolster the limestone. Thus, sinkholes occur. While there are a larger number of sinkholes in Florida. But they predominate in certain specific areas of Florida. Compare sinkhole occurrences in, for example, Pasco county, versus Pinellas county.

    i heard about the hokkaido bear attack before. i can't recall if that was the case here, but when you said that the bear wasn't as big as some can get it got me thinking, bcos a number of maneaters start hunting for humans when they are too weak and/or ill to hunt for another prey - that's the case with a lot of maneating tigers for example. i wonder if that was the case here. still, the whole sequence was a stuff of nightmare, those poor people. no wonder that the survivors didn't want to live in that village anymore

    Yup, living in Florida almost my whole life, sinkholes and sinkhole insurance is pretty common--the West side of Florida is known to be where they mostly happen, especially Pasco county, I grew up hearing stories or seeing something on the news. There are ways to protect yourself though, keep an eye on the signs of your home that a sinkhole may happen: cracks in foundation, exposed tree roots, cracks around door/window frames, overall just things that don’t seem right and drastic changes.

    A sinkhole in Florida that in 2013 consumed and killed a man on his property has opened for a third time, officials said this week.
    Hillsborough County officials said in a statement that the sinkhole in Seffner, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, had reopened again after opening in 2013 and 2015. County officials assessed the site of the hole on Monday and told neighbors in the area that they didn’t need to evacuate as there was no danger to their homes.
    The sinkhole is about 19 feet deep and 19 feet wide at its broadest point, said Todd Pratt, a Hillsborough County spokesman, in an email on Thursday. “The sinkhole is pretty much a repeat of when it reopened in 2015,” Mr. Pratt said. In 2013, it was about 20 feet deep and 20 feet wide.
    Engineers determined this week that there was no indication that the sinkhole would expand, so residents could “remain safely in their homes,” according to the county’s statement.

    I like how in the bear attack the pregnant woman planned to flee and abandon one child to the bear. And even better the men wanted to burn down the house where their wives and children were. It's like the 3 stooges

      They usually do that when there is no hope and they are trying to prevent another death. Also imagine the backlash - headline: "police allow distraught person to go back in to burning building to attempt to save others (or whatever the circumstances are) knowing it will lead to almost certain death - family demands answers and are sueing for wrongful death"
