  • The Arctic is the rapidly melting front line of global warming.
The island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Norway, is warming around three times faster than most places on our planet.
Understanding how and why it's melting so fast could hold the key to preparing the planet for our changing climate, ITV News' Science Correspondent Martin Stew reports.

Please advise at what atmospheric concentration of Co2 does it produce its greatest warming effect ?
Based on the ice core data is it rising Co2 levels which drove up temperature or rising temperature which drove up atmospheric Co2 levels ?
Are current temperatures warmer than they have been for most of the last 8000 years or cooler than they have been for most of the last 8000 years ?

the problem i have as a biologist in this topic is the worlds getting warmer with or without us, we have just come out of an iceage event, with 3 miles of iceshelf where i am today, great yarmouth on the norfolk coast, then there was the big thor, what is the North Sea today was a very fertile grassland plain the went as far as they eyes could see with massive primary biomass enough to feed the wolly rhinos and mammouths that roamed these vast plains.
These ice age events have been going backwards and forwards for at least 5-6 times over the last million years or so, the earths means of keeping cool, it will happen again colder and longer then the ones before. Where do we humans come into all this, little at best, our crimes against the natural world is mainly habitat lose and with it the mass extinction events and population explosion, from 1 billion to 8 now uncontrolled growth and not the resources to deal with such a surge of a large mammal, omnivores too which means everythings on the menu.
The world wants rid of us, as quickly as possible, by what ever means, disease more then likey, then the world can return to pre us, the silence will be overwhelming, so make it soon, luv to come back in a few hundred years to see the transformation, will be paradise on earth at last, we were and are a mistake, it wont happen again

The world climate has changed over the billions of years. Sure. What is different right now is the speed of change. In my area of the world; when the glacier retreated 9-7000 years ago, it took two thousand years to retreat 100kms. The world ice belt retreat, the world temperature and the acidity of the oceans are all increasing at an accelerated pace; With major change in only the past few hundred years and a brisk acceleration from the 1980s forward. That these accelerated changes are attributed primarily to the use of fossil fuels is why we need to change power sources. Not that hard. So I wouldn't write off the human race yet. cheers.

By drilling in the oldest ice on earth we now know the atmospheric carbon content YEAR BY YEAR 1,1 million year back by measuring air trapped in the ice. Incredible considering Homo Sapiens only have been outside the African continent for 65.000 years. It´s not only the atmospheric carbon content locked in airbubbles in the ice, that we can measure, but also things like pollen, ashes (and often from where these ashes are from, is it from volcanoes or people burning coal in their 18 hundred stove heated apartments in London etc). Therefore we KNOW that there have been three times in last 1,1 million years where the atmospheric carbon content have been raised by up to 30 PPM carbon content over the 220 PPM the planets regulating systems prefer by large global volcanic activity and EACH time it have triggered abrupt climate changes that have lasted thousands of years until the planets regulating systems slowly have brought the carbon content back to 220 PPM again. As these activities have happened they were followed initially by large forest fires and the pollen types found shows that a lot of bio diversity have been knocked out and replaced with more simple grass types as the conditions for trees and bushes and flowers abruptly have changed in a matter of very short time.
The great thing about scientific knowledge are that you do not have to guess but can refer to accumulated knowledge obtained.
The problem we have, are that sinister forces, not least hereunder the fossil fuel companies, have invested billions last 70 years, since they realised the scientific facts of what consequences continued use of their products would cause, to lie, dis and mis-inform so that you today can write a comment like you just did instead of having the correct information.

The atmosphere do not care what sinister people decide behind closed doors, it simply respond to the massive amounts of carbon we spew out.

WHOM convinced you that it are a good idea to keep spewing out carbon emissions and send your hard currency to human rights abusing oil sheikhs in the Middle East, when you could produce emission free energy at home and create good stable tax giving jobs at home? Last fiscal year USA, as a minimum, spent 790 billion US tax Dollars on SUBSIDISING fossil fuels. I would estimate that Canada spend something similar and Australia even more per capita. These subsidises creates an unfree market that prevents the cheaper emission free solutions to spread. That are downright bonkers and do not benefit Australia, USA, Canada nor it´s populations. We currently feed 8 billion people a year. In the event of these multiple harvests failing 100 of millions if not several billions risk famine.
WE HAVE ALL the knowledge and technologies to make a complete and fast transition to an emission free energy production and usage. The worlds largest transition project, signed January 2023, are ongoing now and will transition 220 million Europeans in just a decade by raising off shore windmills in the North Sea. On top the worlds largest green hydrogen production. Hydrogen can replace both gasoline and diesel and only emits water when burned. The three large nations with highest greenhouse gas emissions per capita are Australia, USA, Canada. ALL three nations SUBSIDISES fossil fuels in 2024 and not one of them have laid forward a plan to live up to their commitments in the Paris climate accord. All named nations have close to same great options as the worlds largest transition project builds on. It´s more than fumes from fossil fuels that stinks!

The latter 4,000 years of this melt slowed dramatically. This continued to slow for 4,000 years. There has been a very slight uptick over the last hundred years but on a geological scale there is hardly any ice left to melt.
According to NASA the ice is melting at 3.4mm per year. This is imperceptible without scientific instruments. It's less than half a meter in a hundred years. This can hardly be characterized as a "crisis".

even outside of the climate emergency, global warming is kinda why our planet has livable temperatures. It's just that in the past century we've been adding towards greenhouse gases to the point where the warming is way too much. Without ANY warming, our planet would be as cold as space. I could explain the proccess if that would help.

Read and learn.
I repeat! It have never been a winning strategy to put your head in the sand when your house is on fire!
Our house is on fire. WE are OUT OF TIME!
Climate tipping points are triggering and if we do not reverse them NOW we might not be able to recover before we end up loosing our atmosphere, as it happened on Mars, we are heading fast for a disaster we only can prevent if we ACT. We HAVE ALL the needed knowledge and technology to prevent it but as long as we do not even see some nations stopping to subsidise fossil fuels and thus prevent the now cheaper emission free solutions from even taken over the market naturally we might not make it. I cannot stress enough that it are NOW or we are running out of time. The atmosphere do not care what sinister people decide behind closed doors, it simply respond to the massive amounts of carbon we spew out.
Google: What are the atmospheric carbon content right now" and understand that we have not even stopped the leak at planet Titanic. Atmospheric carbon content are still accelerating upwards! Stop having unfunded opinions and understand the scientific proven reality of our dire situation!
The point are we do not have to go back to the stone age at all, actually that are what we can prevent by acting NOW! Worlds largest transition project are based on offshore windmill parks and thus green bulk electricity and green hydrogen production. This project will transition 220 million Europeans inside a decade and are ongoing now. Nothing prevents nations like USA, Canada and Australia from making a simple copy/paste of this project. Relate to FACTS! Facts are that we NOE have passed insane 420 PPM carbon in our atmosphere, still rising. Thus Humans in a little over 200 years have raised atmospheric carbon content with not, 30 PPM and not 100 PPM but insane 200+ PPM!
