Dave wrote this for his solo album Pocketwatch. It was recorded by Dave and Krist one day during the In Utero sessions when they were waiting around in the studio for Kurt to arrive. Kurt later added some overdubs.
Mental Set On the first take of marigold from the in Utero sessions, Dave is on guitar, Krist is on bass and Kurt is on drums. And Dave sings lead while Kurt is backing vocals

I wonder if that was what influenced this song or if it was said in response to this song? Probably the latter as, although the interview was done months before the release of In Utero, I think they had finished all the recording

The only question for me is what were the ideas of kurt about grohl's talent as songwriter... @@matthewbeach2952 Wrong. In the first band he made with Krist, Kurt was the drummer and he was quite a good drummer actually. He even wrote parts of the drums for a lot of Nirvana songs. For example the opening drum roll for Teen Spirit
