    I’ve the 50 f2 and it’s amazing! Compact for travel and perfect for close portraits. Also just got the 50 f1 and its for a totally different purpose! For me both of them complement. Just need to have that 50 f2 on your kit 💪🏻

    A great portrait lens. I really enjoy using it. I used the 56 for my weddings as well because it has certain characteristics that I need in those situations. I find that the 50 mm is a great walk around lens and it’s great for doing street portraits.

    I’ve found 50mm on APS-C to be a good ‘drive by’ focal length… and the lighter the better. I like having 50mm on a small camera body when driving around Los Angeles to capture shots from right out of my front windows. Cheers.

    I might get this this next but I'm still learning on my Fuji 35mm 1.4 currently and I'm happy with the results so far. I like the less distortion of the narrower focal length but need to experience more missed scenes where I would need the 50mm that the 35mm could not do. Maybe later in street \wildlife photography where I can shoot from afar.

    Yes! Great timing with this video. I’ve been looking at picking up a 50mm F2 for the past few weeks. I was worried I wouldn’t use it much as it’s a pretty close focal length to the 35mm I already have. But after watching this, I’m going to pull the trigger! Thanks for another awesome video👍🏽

    Hello Zach, I got this lens a few months ago and I really enjoy using it, I always preferred an 85mm for portraits, but this is 75mm FF equivalent and it works well. I also have the 16 f/2.8, 23 f/2 and the 35 f/2, the fact the they’re not “fast” lenses isn't an issue for me, I shoot mostly between 5.6 and 11 (my photography has to include everything, haha), I have the XF 16-80 which has all of the above focal lengths and is very practical for certain situations but there’s no comparison, the f/2’s are sharper (if you’re pixel peeping) and faster to focus. Be well and stay safe.

    Thank you for your great review Zach! :) You helped me confirm myself that this lens will be the best choose for me for portraits :) I'm still wondering 50mm f2.0 will be enough for portraits and product photography or maybe I should choose 56mm 1.2 for this two photography areas? Anyone here could share with me your experiences with products? :)))

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think either would be great options! You probably won’t need that fast aperture for product photography I’d imagine, so you might save a bit of money with the F2. Thanks for watching!

  • @charliejg

    Hi Zach! First, thanks for your review. I have the X-T3 currently with only the 18-55. I do use a Canon FD 50mm f1.8 on it once in a while which is why I've been watching reviews for this 50mm f2 lens. I'm considering it for shooting portraits. I'm an amateur, not shooting for a money. So, the 90mm and 56mm are way out of my budget as are the new 1.4 lenses like the 33mm. Question: If you were buying for shooting portraits would you choose the 35mm f2 or the 50mm f2? Why? Not looking for you to choose for me, just looking to hear as many thoughts about the two lenses as I can before choosing. Based upon your 35mm f2 video I think I know the answer I was originally leaning toward the 35mm, but the 50 would provide more of that compression and I don't have to get so close to the model. But, I also like that 50mm(35 f2) field of view. Oh well, thanks again for the great content.

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for watching! It's a good question. For me, I think it would have to be the 35. I just feel like it's an overall more versatile focal length. The 50 is a bit better optically in my opinion, so if that's important to you it's something to consider. Honestly both are good options. You just need to consider you need more space when shooting with the 50. Hope this helps!

    I have both the 56 and the 50 f1, and now I want this, just as a light weight alternative that also has weather sealing. If the 56 had WR, then I’d not consider this.

      I shot with the Canon 6d II + EF 50mm f1,2 L for a while and then swapped systems and went all the way to Fujifilm. I now get the "magical" shots with the Mitacon 35mm f0,95 Speedmaster on Fujifilm and viewing the results side by side I can say the Fuji + Mitakon is sharper than the Canon 6d II + 50mm f1,2 and still has tons of character and almost no aberations to worry about. If you can live with manual focus, give the Mitakon a go.

    • @robjackson606
      @robjackson606 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petrvokurek2286 That Mitakon is indeed magic. No better character lens with modern sharpness at that size and price in Fuji's lineup I dare say. Shockingly easy to focus wide open with focus peaking as well

    • @petrvokurek2286
      @petrvokurek2286 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robjackson606 I´ve since gone back to Canon because of the bigger sensor and use the Canon RF 50mm f1,2 lens instead. That lens is optically perfect, possibly even a little bit "too perfect"... the Mitacon has more magic. But photos from a bigger sensor are simply better for what I do. Maybe, I´ll try to get something simmilar for Canon...

    • @TheZachMendez
      @TheZachMendez  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching!! Yeah, the peak design anchors I bought came with tiny metal rings (those little key ring type rings). Fujifilm cameras also ship with them, the little triangle key-ring type anchor points that you can attach to the camera itself. That gives you a large enough anchor point for the peak design anchors. Hope that makes sense haha... Cheers! :)

    I don't have the second system so it's Fuji's superb 56mm for me which looks and feels fantastic on the Pro body. For portraits I go longer with the 90mm, which renders in a truly magical way. It's a superb system all round. Can't wait to see the new 33mm... I enjoyed your review, a very fair presentation - and great portraits too - well done!

    I had been splitting between two systems (fuji x-pro2 and f2 primes + Nikon Z6 & f4 kit + 50 f1.8) and always beat myself up for having two systems. Always a hair away from selling one of them. The conclusion I came to was that the Fuji 50mm f2 was so incredibly beautiful, with such rich color rendition and sharpness, I couldn't sell the system. The Nikon Z6 stays for video. So I totally get why you'd shoot on two systems... right there with you!

I know the 35 is a like “general” all around lens but I’m intrigued by the 50mm for portraits. Would I be better off trading the 23mm for a 35 and having a 50mm and 80mm?

      Tough choices! I get it. It's hard for me to say because It is totally up to your preference. Honestly, if you have the 50, maybe the 23 would give you just a bit more coverage in terms of focal length. The 23 f/2 is a great little lens for environmental portraits or landscapes, street, etc. 50 is awesome for portraits. Hard to say, haha. But I hope this helps! And thank you for watching!

    I find the 50mm crop sensor to be an irrelevancy. You explained why it works for you, but for me who grew up with 24, 35, 50 and 105/85 ff primes on a Nikon film camera, a 75 ff equiv is neither here nor there. Too much perspective exaggeration for pleasing head and shoulders portraits of adult faces, not wide enough for any use as a general purpose “nifty fifty” single walk around lens and too short for optimal architecture/landscape. I am mystified as to what the discussion was at Fuji when they decided to produce a 50, not only one, but two of them, including the 1.0, and bypassing a refresh of their 56. After all, no 75mm prime has ever been made by any camera manufacturer, probably for the aforementioned reasons. Why would Fuji pick such a field of view for a prime? If they wanted another focal length besides the 56 and their 90 for a portrait lens, they should have gone all-in with a 70mm, which would be a 105 ff equiv that has produced some of the most memorable portraits in photographic history.
