I keep a modded crkt nobo with a 16 1/2 inch handle with my rifle rig, i found it to be a great and light all around tool, good luck to ya from Columbus🤙🏻
OK, I was kind of like you and just didn't get the tomahawk thing but I did have a little kind of hidden desire to get one, just for fun you know. I told myself I wouldn't inhale. So I got a Trail Hawk and I thought that would be enough...until I watched your last few videos. Now I realize the Trail Hawk is like a gateway drug and suddenly I really NEED more hawks. I could hate you ;-)
With the smallish head the handle looks right. I understand the length to create distance and leverage but I still prefer my handles a little shorter. To each his own. This is one of my favorite hawks. Traditional looks but made for work.Good vids you do.
When hammering, couldn't you have just choked up on the shaft instead of cutting it? Im not slamming you Im just thinking of doing this to mine and was wondering if the shorter shaft makes chopping more laborious. Was it a reasonable trade off?
Great video. Just did 4 of these. 2 regular length for display and the other 2 i took 5 and 3/4 off the handle. They work great. I can send you pics of them if your interested. And i agree i love my worksharp.
I like how you cut it down. I have the Norse and Trail Hawks, but looking for another to tinker with. They are fun and don't cost a heck of a lot. I hardly use my 2Hawks Woodsman because it cost me so much and I had to wait forever for it..LOL
I think the Trail Hawk is too small to be of any real use, just my opinion. I got one for a friend who wanted that model and I customized it for him, but after handling it, I had no desire to buy one for me.
Great mods man. I think I'm going to cut mine down too now. I have a suggestion about the shock cord, add a loop of para cord a the end like a little tab and it should make it easier to pull back on or off.
Hey, Chris, have you seen Living Survival's sheath for his hawk? Probably so, by now, but check it if not. Thanks for this video, I was looking at a trail hawk but absolutely will go with this version, I agree with you. And I agree about the lenght, too. I need that much more leverage, I'll pick up an ax. This is a very usable length and I'm a traction tape/grp tape guy, as well. Pretty is fine but I want my stuff to work for me, not against me.
Chris...Thank You! I've been messing with cheap camp hatchets for years. On family camping trips I've been bringing an Estwing hammer for small tasks, a hatchet and machete for kindling and also a full sized 5 pound axe for larger wood. I've been skeptical about the Cold Steel hawks for awhile because they look like cheap collector items. Now I see the multiple uses of this tool and will be buying and modding it ASAP! One quick question regarding your mod...you blued the head?
Looking for a hawk I can take on a backpacking trip to Yellowstone this summer. Looking for something I can do chores with, is lighter than an axe, but use as a weapon if necessary. Sounds like the Pipe Hawk with a shortened handle is the choice. What would you say Chris?
Greg Swift Greg, I just bought one from Southblade.com. Amazon has them as well as Cold Steel's website coldsteel.com. I bought a kydex cover from endless mountain supply, endlessmountainsupply.com Wouldn't mind trying them out in the TX hill country. ;-)
Hey Chris, picked up your channel about a month back and have liked it pretty well so far. Especially love some of the knife reviews. Respectfully, however, I don't understand what you are doing in this video. How can you accurately review a product when the first thing you do before swinging it is to modify it? Shouldn't product reviews be done as they come stock? If the grind isn't to your preference and the handle isn't ergonomic enough to keep from slipping, shouldn't that be a minus as part of the review? Thanks for what you do, Chris. I appreciate your channel.
No. Because my view isn't everyone else's view. I wrap ALL my working knives just because that's what I've grown to like. I already did my first impressions review on this knife in its normal configuration. One thing I try to show on my channel is how to do simple modifications. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Take the Beckers for instance. Lots of people don't like how they come. But when they see how easy it is to change things to make it how they like it then they want one. There can't be a uniform rating system because we are all different. I think the MORE varying views we can find on TH-cam, the better. The only thing I charged on the knife itself was the wrap, and like I said, I wrap everything.
PREPAREDMIND101 My apologies Chris, I didn't even put this on the right video. This is the video I was watching as I was thinking about your last tomahawk review (which is where I got my grind comment from). In any event, no hate was intended, I'm watching more of your reviews now, and thanks for your reply.
Jason Weisberger Wait... You were talking about the Riflemans Hawk? I thought it was the Tahoma Field Knife. Now I am confused. I HAVE to change the Cold Steel hawks. They aren't ready from the get go and I hate the way they look.
Yeah that's the one. Again, sorry for the confusion. So you automatically reprofile the cold steel hawks with a convex grind? Because they come with a crap grind stock or just personal preference?
Beautiful work. If you ever break the frontier hawks handle, ill buy the tomahawk head off of you if you dont want to deal with it. I want to do a handle project but too cheap and poor to buy the whole thing.
Just an idea for the handle, Soak rope in water then wrap the handle creating a weave or pattern, then roast the handle over a fire enough to discolor the wood. don't char it. Remove the rope and the pattern remains. This a traditional method I learned back in the '80's watching Roy Underhill from the Woodwright Shop.
Love the mods. I was planning on getting one for each of my son's. Think now I def will and cut them down. But they are young yet so I may just do the single wrap of Wilson tape. You always come up with some great mod ideas. Keep them coming brother.
That’s really not how they were seen historically, it was just another way to mount the head on a belt axe. They were used by trappers and native Americans as tools extensively, the combat aspect has been played up in movies ect
I keep a modded crkt nobo with a 16 1/2 inch handle with my rifle rig, i found it to be a great and light all around tool, good luck to ya from Columbus🤙🏻
Looks like the ideal camp sized tool. Just the right length and functional grip.
It gets worse. I just bought a $113 CRKT hawk today. AFTER getting another Hawk and axe in the mail from Joe Flowers.
So I guess there's no point in fighting it. Next thing you know I'll start naming my knives.
Great review what brand is the coat in that Marpat camo? Thanks for your videos.
My favorite, by far, Cold Steel Hawk too... nice Mods and Sheath. Cheers

Mean looking and even better, mean working! Good go!
KEEP POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!! Love to watch all of these big fan keep it coming
Thanks. New one in a few minutes.
Can you please provide some more detail/specs on the hockey tape and which model of Wilson grip you used?
I don't know the hockey tape brand name, only that it was the sticky kind. The Wilson wrap is in a three pack at Walmart.
What are the tools needed to modify a Hawk? I know there are many options. But what should you start with if you don’t have much?
When hammering, couldn't you have just choked up on the shaft instead of cutting it? Im not slamming you Im just thinking of doing this to mine and was wondering if the shorter shaft makes chopping more laborious. Was it a reasonable trade off?
Could you add a link to the maker of the sheath?
Great video. Just did 4 of these. 2 regular length for display and the other 2 i took 5 and 3/4 off the handle. They work great. I can send you pics of them if your interested. And i agree i love my worksharp.
Post them on the FB page.

Any thoughts on the pathfinder scout hawk?
So what’s the ideal handle length that you used for this one
I love the mods. I might have to get myself one and mod it. Great video!
Where can I get that sheath? Is it for sale. I have a 3 set of the Pipe hawk as they get thrown a lot. Great tomahawk worth the price
Love the mods Chris
Ah, so the pipe is solid. My decision is made, thanks for the review.
Is this sheath still available?
Thanks for the info, cool mods, great tool, you motivated me to try one. Hoka hey.
How did you give the axe head a antique coloe finish?
You can use gun blue
Hey Chris i forgot to ask if you put any thing else on the stock handle. As far as seals/coatings/water prevention? Keep the vids coming!!!
great video. What are your thoughts on the trail hawk compared to the pipe hawk?
I think the Trail Hawk is too small to be of any real use, just my opinion. I got one for a friend who wanted that model and I customized it for him, but after handling it, I had no desire to buy one for me.
Great Job! and very cool Axe :)
Micky
HI, I'd like to have a shorter handle like yours on my Pipe Hawk... did you buied it or just cutted down the original one?
you aught to do a review on the Cold Steel Viking hand axe, since there are very few reviews on it
I cut mine to 17 also
Fractal burned the handle. Works great
Great mods man. I think I'm going to cut mine down too now. I have a suggestion about the shock cord, add a loop of para cord a the end like a little tab and it should make it easier to pull back on or off.
Can't u make a play list whit all the movies u make about Axes?

Yes. Cold Steel hawks are fun projects. Do a burn wrap and then linseed oil. Google "customized Cold Steel tomahawk" and just gawk at the pics.
Loving it!
How's the grip after extended use without gloves? Any hot spots?
Nope. I've been using that stuff on knife handles for two years.

"Aye"
Where do u buy those at?
Greg Swift Greg, I just bought one from Southblade.com. Amazon has them as well as Cold Steel's website coldsteel.com. I bought a kydex cover from endless mountain supply, endlessmountainsupply.com Wouldn't mind trying them out in the TX hill country. ;-)
Just ordered one from amazon. To cool.
That was my next question the cover? Thanks

will do. thanks
Show off the tool box/ gear storage area !
Maybe when it's all finished and organized. Need 2 warm days.
Beautiful work.

It's only $26 on Amazon. Skip Mcdonalds 5 times.
+PREPAREDMIND101 5???? thatd be one trip for my self..
@@preparedmind101in Australia 2023 thats not quite enough for 2 big mac meals 😂

Great video. The Ohio wind wanted to make it's presence known. I might recommend a mic hooked to your jacket with a windsrcreen.
Crazy wind advisory that day. Wouldn't have made a difference.
Yeah, that wouldn't have made a difference.
Man I'd like to buy a sheath exactly like that for mine...
hola, tienes las medidas de la hacha, please
sí
thanks bro

wow nice! respect!
Let's be honest here. Hawks are intended weapons of war. They doubled as tools yes but they are a close quarters combat weapon.
That’s really not how they were seen historically, it was just another way to mount the head on a belt axe. They were used by trappers and native Americans as tools extensively, the combat aspect has been played up in movies ect
yea!
mine's 18"
About perfect length for that hawk.
You gonna review the tool box?
Whit
It's just a bunch of metal drawers on wheels. Got it for my gear not tools.
All your experiments of handle wraps, have you tried a cricket bat grip?
No. I wouldn't even know what that's like since nobody plays cricket here.
PREPAREDMIND101 Just soft rubber tubes that come in a variety of grippy textures and colours.
I literally said 'what the heck is that?' Not two seconds later " I know you're looking at this thinking 'what the heck is that' ".

estwing carpenters and or riggers half hatchet
What about it?
You should learn how to throw hawks
Agreed. Seems dumb since it's an easy way to break them, but still...
