My Immortal used to always make me cry, especially since the time around when I found it was when I myself had lost someone. Hello by Evanescance as well had a pretty similar effect.
She could sing what is written on my W2 and make it hauntingly beautiful. I wonder if I could get her to do that on Cameo?🤔She would understand why I couldn’t give her much…
I remember going so many days overplaying My Immortal by Evanescence and just be at awe at those instrumentals here. Amy's voice is beautiful and yet heartbreaking. The same could be said of Bonnie Rait's I Can't Make You Love Me. On some days, this song can put a grown man such as myself to tears. It's a classic song and I cannot believe its from 1991 - I was only 8 years old when that song came out.
I was expecting How to Save a Life by the Fray to be on here, but in my humble opinion, Look After You is the Fray’s most hauntingly beautiful song, especially when Isaac Slade hits his falsetto.
Despite his objections to the cover (because it was very personal) Trent later said after hearing Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, "That's not my song anymore."
Maybe it's because I'm a millennial, but these are hitting me so hard. Several of these are the ones that make me cry. Sia's "Breathe Me" is one of my favourite songs.
I can't make you love me! An anthem for those of us that have loved and lost. Breaks my heart and makes me want what I know I can ever have. I still love him, so many years later. 😢
I have a lot of these. Many take me back to the 90s / early 2000s. Mazzy Star, Radiohead, Sarah McLachlan, Gary Jules' "Mad World" and the first time I saw Donnie Darko (on a DVD that I borrowed from a friend). "Breathe Me" is now associated for me with the beautiful finale of "Six Feet Under." Those were years of discovering (or often, being introduced to by friends) so much music, plus movies and TV shows. It was before streaming, when people made mixed tapes and CDs for each other, when we lent each other DVDs . . . And while it's much older, "Sound of Silence" is such a gorgeous song.
I will add ; wild horses - the sundays, sometimes - my bloody valentine, don't give up - peter Gabriel, fragile - sting, into a dust - mazzy star, protection - massive attack, undenied - portishead, no ordinary love - sade, song to the siren - this mortal coil, secret garden - bruce Springsteen, im not in love - 10cc, if - bread, paperbag - goldfrapp, home - depeche mode, miss sarajevo - U2, true colors - cindy lauper, live to tell - madonna, asleep - the Smiths
Great list, needs a part 2 . Cohen & Jennifer Warnes “Joan of Arc”, P.M. Dawn “I’d Die Without You”, Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight”, Aretha Franklin “Natural Woman”, Sam Cooke “A Change is Gonna Come”, RHCP “Under the Bridge”, Everlast “Know What it’s Like”, Michael Jackson “Stranger in Moscow”, George Harrison “Cheer Down”, Stevie Wonder “Village Ghettoland” to name a few
How Amy Lee of Evanescence isn't a bigger star is beyond me. Her look is extremely marketable, and that voice is next level beautiful. In a musical era where talent is secondary to looks, singers like her stand out because she's the total package that would've been huge before the advent of Autotune.
I would also add Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd) and Streets of Philadelphia (Bruce Springsteen) to the list. Those songs are gorgeous and stick with ya
Honestly you could make a top ten hauntingly beautiful songs for just Evanescence. Speak to Me, Lost in Paradise, Hello, Like You, Imaginary, My Immortal, My Heart is Broken, The Last Song I’m Wasting On You, Lacrymosa, and Far from Heaven would be my picks.
For Annie Lennox, I would have chosen "Into the West", from The Return of the King. I always cry listening to it, thinking of loved ones that have passed over to the Grey Havens 🥺
How about Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin, Chris Isaac - Wicked Games, Jennifer Warnes - Joan of Arc, Seal - Kiss from a Rose, Tracy Chapman - Fast Car, Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs, Peter Yarrow - There is Love, James Taylor - Fire and Rain? Talk about missing the boat!!!
Where I Stood by Missy Higgins is an underrated honorable mention. Also, Lithium and Lost in Paradise by Evanescence are my choices for hauntingly beautiful Evanescence songs.
NiN’s original “Hurt” (because I was a teenager in 1994) Tori Amos - “These Precious Things” Kate Bush - “Deeper Understanding” Billie Eilish - “Everything I Wanted”
Amen to that. I'd add another masterpiece from WT to your list; say my name. Anyone who has ever lost loved one to dementia will resonate with the song.
Lana Del Rey's songs are great for this mood. Born To Die, The Grants, Summertime Sadness, Did you know there's a tunnel, among others are haunting and beautiful!
Creep by Radiohead, Unforgiven by Metallica and By my side by INXS are some of the most haunting songs I've ever listened to, and honesty I'm shocked at least Creep didn't make into the list.
There is so many older hauntingly beautiful songs you left off. And a number of Artists. If you want to hear what many are saying is the most beautiful voice they've heard, and is capable of healing look up "Charlie" Zhou Shen. You will not be disappointed.
All I can think from this is that you and I have very different perceptions of what 'hauntingly beautiful' means. I'll give you your top 3 as at least qualifying for the definition, but not as the top 3, or even top 10! For me, hauntingly beautiful has got to include at least one song by Cocteau Twins and/or Elizabeth Frazer. So here goes my Top 10 in no particular order: *Teardrop - Massive Attack *Song to the Siren - This Mortal Coil *Little Star - Stina Nordenstam *It's a Fine Day - Jane *Life in a Northern Town - Dream Academy *Blackbird - The Beatles *Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap *Pearly Dew Drops Drops - Cocteau Twins *Independence Day - Elliott Smith *Heroes - David Bowie
The absence of Hozier is criminal. I have nothing else to do so here are some personal picks that I think are hauntingly beautiful if anyone is interested; 1) the doll people - sofia isella 2) diminuendo - lawless ft. britt warner 3) nfwmb - hozier 4) don't fear the reaper (cover) - denmark+winter 5) seven devils - florence+the machine 6) love and war - fleurie 7) sober - tool 8) black hole sun - sound garden 9) once upon a dream - lana del rey 10) video games(cover) slowed and reverbed - trixie mattel (very specific, yes, but its too heavenly) 11) bone church - slipknot 12) lie - bts 13) the season of the witch - lana del rey 14) horizon - aldous harding 15) i need a forest fire - james blake ft. bon iver 16) anything by hozier 17) drink before the war - sinead o'conner 18) indigo night - tamino 19) anything by sufjan stevens If any one have other recommendations I'd appraciate it. I really like this vibe of music.
For me TO WHERE YOU ARE by Josh Groban is the most powerful, and most beautiful song I have ever heard. I first heard it after September 11th, and it literally made me cry. "And I believe that angels breathe, and that love will live on and never leave." was what I needed to hear in that dark and terrible time.
Kate Bush This Woman’s Work is hauntingly beautiful shame it didn’t make the list. For me two beautiful songs on here were elevated to another level by Pentatonix, The Sound of Silence and Hallelujah.
These are some truly really beautiful songs ❤️❤️ my favourites are My Immortal, The Scientist, Tears in Heaven, Mad World, Hurt and The Sound of silence and Hallelujah 🩷🩷
Nice list. Tears in Heaven, Sounds of Silence, and Mad World are my favorites. I'd also add Stranger in Moscow and Earth Song, both by Michael Jackson.
Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence is a classic, but Disturbed's version knocks it out of the park. If I'm not in the right emotional state, I'm done for the day after 1 playing.
Everything but the Girl- Missing Where is Queen is this list, anything by Journey? I guess the list could go on and on. I read so many in the comments with which I completely agree: Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush as well.
"Angel" by Sarah Mclachlan isn't just associated with the ASPCA, she sang it after the 2020 mass shooting here in her home province of Nova Scotia for everyone here. Angel will always be tied to Nova Scotia Remembers and her love of Nova Scotia.
I'm guessing since not mainstream, DeVotchKa's "This Will End" and "Dearly Departed" are absolutely beautiful, also Morphine has a bunch of songs that fit this category too, their song "Like a Mirror" and "The Night" (the album name) are awesome. Morphine's singer died waaay too early and was a crazy talented man, even invented an instrument for a certain sound he was looking for.

Thanks!
They got a few of them right. For my money, the most haunting songs are "The Great Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd and "Calling You" by Javetta Steele
"Tears in Heaven" always makes me bawl, especially knowing that it's about the tragic death of Eric Clapton's toddler son.
This. It always made me cry even had a child and then when I had my son it broke my heart even more
It's rumoured he wrote it waaayyy before....
Yes I remember crying the 1st 10× at least I heard it. I was a high school senior when he released it.
You should listen to circus then.
Enya and Lana Del Rey should be considered the queens of hauntingly beautiful music ❤️
My Immortal used to always make me cry, especially since the time around when I found it was when I myself had lost someone. Hello by Evanescance as well had a pretty similar effect.
Hello is apparently the one song Amy Lee had the hardest time performing live when Evanescence came out with Fallen and it's no wonder why.
Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues is beautiful and haunting. I loved all the beautiful songs you fearured.😊
This was the one I was going to suggest! So beautiful
practically anything by Lana De Rey is hauntingly beautiful
Pepsi is haunting me to this day
Legit. I own most of her records. Love it
@ wow
"California" from NFR! is one of my personal faves.
She could sing what is written on my W2 and make it hauntingly beautiful. I wonder if I could get her to do that on Cameo?🤔She would understand why I couldn’t give her much…
Super old one, but my mom introduced me to it years ago; Nights In White Sarin. Moody Blues. Just so good.
I agree completely! Those soaring harmonies give me chills.
SATIN, not Sarin.
Great song!
Yes , it's beautiful
Oldie but goody. Luv it.
Mad World was used in an amazingly haunting advert for the Gears of War videogame as well, brilliant.
Especially with Dom's sacrifice!
I luv that ine too.
I remember going so many days overplaying My Immortal by Evanescence and just be at awe at those instrumentals here. Amy's voice is beautiful and yet heartbreaking. I was expecting How to Save a Life by the Fray to be on here, but in my humble opinion, Look After You is the Fray’s most hauntingly beautiful song, especially when Isaac Slade hits his falsetto.
It's been so long since I listened to The Fray!
Despite his objections to the cover (because it was very personal) Trent later said after hearing Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, "That's not my song anymore."
I love telling that to people, both that it was originally a NIN song, and that they essentially consider their version the cover now.
Dusty Springfield "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" is heart wrenchingly beautiful & nostalgic
Only Time (Enya)
Fast Car (Tracy Chapman)
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)
Maybe it's because I'm a millennial, but these are hitting me so hard. Several of these are the ones that make me cry. Sia's "Breathe Me" is one of my favourite songs.
I can't make you love me! An anthem for those of us that have loved and lost. Breaks my heart and makes me want what I know I can ever have. I still love him, so many years later. 😢
Same here. Still miss him.

I couldn’t agree more
I would also add Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd) and Streets of Philadelphia (Bruce Springsteen) to the list. Those songs are gorgeous and stick with ya
Evanescence has many songs like that. Breathe No More, and Missing always make me cry.
Amy Lee is truly one of those who should be a megastar because of that ridiculously amazing voice.
What a great list. Some of my favorite songs. When someone asks me what kind of songs I love, I will now say "hauntingly beautiful ones."
Two songs by Sarah McLaughlin make me cry,one is on this list, another one is I will remember you.💘💘💘
Also Adia!!!
@UnderappreciatedFemaleArtists oh,yeah,nice catch!💘💘💘
For Annie Lennox, I would have chosen "Into the West", from The Return of the King. I always cry listening to it, thinking of loved ones that have passed over to the Grey Havens 🥺
The Night We Met- Lord Huron should be on this list
Sinead O'Connor's "No One Compares 2 You". Haunting and heartbreaking.
Absolutely! This one should be not only on this list but very near the top.
Nothing, not No One.
I do enjoy her cover of the song more than the writer Prince's original recording.
3 song
1) Far From Heaven - Evanescence
2) Hello - Evanescence
3) When She Loved Me - Sarah McLachlan
I feel like any of Lana Del Rey’s songs could be considered “Hauntingly Beautiful”
Beautiful Christina. X tina
Young and Beautiful since it was featured on The Great Gatsby soundtrack. The book version packs a massive punch more than the movie.
I am a little surprised you didn't add Dust in the Wind.
Love Hurts by Nazareth also comes to mind when I think of Dust in the Wind.

The first time I heard “My Immortal”, it was playing at a goodbye party my friend held after the group graduated high school. I was a wreck.
NiN’s original “Hurt” (because I was a teenager in 1994)
Tori Amos - “These Precious Things”
Kate Bush - “Deeper Understanding”
Billie Eilish - “Everything I Wanted”
Wicked Ways by Chris Isaak should definitely be on the list
I feel like Sinead O'Connor's version of "Nothing Compares to U" should be on here!
Adele-love you in the dark
Carly Simon-that’s the way I always heard it should be
Within Temptation should be on this list (Memories, Our Farewell, Forgiven, Somewhere)
Amen to that. I'd add another masterpiece from WT to your list; say my name. Anyone who has ever lost loved one to dementia will resonate with the song.
Alright, well, you had me at your name and then made my knees weak with this suggestion. Bravo!!
I would also suggest Toy Soldiers by Martika, Possession by Sarah Mclachlan, and It Can't Rain All The Time by Jane Siberry.
This list definitely needed to include Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap! Such a unique and beautiful song!
Ikr. Creep is a beautiful song.
Perhaps Love, John Denver ; Lift Me Up, Rihanna; Long long Time, Linda Ronstadt ; Puff the magic Dragon, Peter, Paul and Mary

Any song from Lana Del Rey ❤❤
I have heard almost every single one of these songs and I agree with pretty much all of them
All I can think from this is that you and I have very different perceptions of what 'hauntingly beautiful' means. I'll give you your top 3 as at least qualifying for the definition, but not as the top 3, or even top 10! I also like the version by Pentatonix.
Yeah I was surprised this didn't at least mention Disturbed's cover.
I love "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead.
Perhaps your list should have featured 100 songs instead of 20 😀
Stairway to Heaven has always sounded haunting to me. So has Three Wishes by The Pierces.
13:47 I remember that song from Beastly, I believe.
Hurt makes me cry. I can't think of anyone besides the man in black who could do that song justice. Trent's version in gutting too.

Hurt by Christina Aguilera is my top pick for most hauntingly beautiful
I'm guessing since not mainstream, DeVotchKa's "This Will End" and "Dearly Departed" are absolutely beautiful, also Morphine has a bunch of songs that fit this category too, their song "Like a Mirror" and "The Night" (the album name) are awesome.
