Rain probably causes the same effect, on account of each droplet falling at a different tempo? Unless I'm wrong of course, I'm not a physicist or meteorologist.
@@AkitosAncitis Fun science fact. The beats do emerge, as this is due to happen to all coupled oscillators. Since they are all sat on the same furniture, they will influence each other's frequency and phase until at least some groups become in sync.
The slower ones take longer to finish (assuming they are wound evenly). They should cushion them to prevent vibrations coupling, which could cause unwanted synchronization. Someone should have sabotaged it by running 107 metronomes, to see whether György Ligeti would notice the alteration.
strangely moving. makes me think of people, in their millions, going about their various lives...and of happenstance, and of death. most things make me think of death, honestly. still, it's not all futile. not all of it.
@@dcar6530 So I noticed a few things, like how they all have different tempo settings, yet one of them (at 2:21 - middle row - right unit) runs down "first." Then it comes to mind that those with a faster tempo may "run down" sooner, and drop out. Then also comes to mind the idea that those of a similar tempo will "last about the same duration" (while the faster tempos run down sooner) then also start setting up a "resonance echo" of sorts, such that the air vibrations will tend to aid the remaining units in achieving synchronization.
This, to me, is the most brilliant idea ever. I've checked this performance out countless times to just impress my musician friends, but now that I've been more versed in it's purpose, holy shit....This literally is the most hypnotic and apocolyptic composition ever made. You hear a cacophony of clicks going on for a few minutes, before you start to slowly realize your time is running out. I think if a person was to ever desire to add insult to injury to a death row patient, you'd have them hooked up to headphones and cue the electric to close the circuit right at the same time of the final metronome click!

My piece with 101 metronomes is a step forward.
The Metronome that stops ticking at 2:22 is the Trombone Player
What do you do if you see a trumpet growing in your garden? -root-it-oot!
And the one that keeps going at the end is the drummer who never stops making noise when you're trying to talk to your band mates at rehearsal.
And that’s how the metronome got recruited for the navy seals
I liked the sound of the metronome number 65.
Really? Its out of tune... I dont like it.
sounds like rain

Ligeti. A genius. A true musician
Any possible translation on the French explanation at the end?
Not quite my tempo...

Sorry Mr. Simmons
were you rushing or were you dragging?
Good, but not as inspiring as 4'33" played simultaneously in four helicopters.
I think your'e confusing Cage with Stockhausen.
@@nickyhamlyn355 it's impossible to confuse Cage.
It would be a miracle if you could get the helicopters to be quiet.

a good one!
Nice the way ordered beats emerge from chaos.
It's in your brain that they are emerging. If there is no one in the forest and a tree falls, is there a sound?
@@AkitosAncitis that’s not how you use that phrase, that just doesn’t make sense

6:28 it stops and deep relief silence goes into infinity. ♾
Sounds like a whole division of Marines cocking their weapons rank by rank.

Now, that's a polyrythm!
That's why Ligeti is the best composer ever.

My understanding is that if you play this backwards, at some point it will start saying "Turn me on dead man..."
LOL
Verse Three of this is my favorite verse!
Now THIS is what I call ASMR!
How rude. The piece wasn't over when she started talking.
Absolutely disrespectful to the instrumentalists who worked so hard practicing for this brilliant performance
What I want to know is how did they get started!
