Advanced Streamer Fly Fishing

- Streamers are an effective way of catching trout, often some of the largest fish in a river or stream will move to a streamer. In the last 20 years streamer fly fishing has changed a great deal, from the fly lines used to the fly patterns. In this fascinating video, Tom Rosenbauer will go into great detail about the new techniques, fly lines, leaders and fly patterns used for successful modern streamer fishing!

I love streamer fishing. The big take away for me is that "sometimes a fish will try to drown the mouse ". I thought it was a miss. Keep the fly in place and keep stripping. Great advice. Thanks Tom.

I've only recently begun streamer fishing. I, too, believed streamers were meant for high, painted, water. In the past 6 months, I've watched a few streamer videos. I believe you may have had another video that included streamer fishing as a part of it. I learned more in this video than all of the others combined. You actually taught me - the others did little towards that end. Excellent instruction. Excellent lessons. Mice - who knew? I believed they were primarily for bass. I was surprised to learn from the comments that you were using a 6wt for streamers. I assumed you were throwing 8wt line. And, you commented about the size of the brook trout being the biggest you ever caught. I've caught a fair number of brook trout. I've watched dozens of videos that included others landing brook trout. I've never seen any even close to those that you pulled in. Your excitement and the words you used were spontaneous and genuine. Do not be concerned about others who have commented about your language. It was appropriate in the moment. I'm betting we do not have brook trout that size in our entire U.S. Your short video answered far more questions than I could ever think of for streamers. I do have one question. For what purpose do you use that sword that's in the sheath on your hip? What is it?

I've only been fly fishing for fifty years, and it's ALWAYS been streamer fishing. ALWAYS.
I've been fishing for awhile now and just really getting into it hard for the past 2 or so years. I've only caught fish on streamers. Saving for a streamer only setup now.
A small wet fly above the streamer makes it just a wee bit more potent.
How sad! Dryfly is where it's at! Just use your spinning rod if you want to do this .

Toms advanced streamer technique - Use a Nymph. ...brilliant!
It is a good idea, something we've used for smallmouth bass on occasion when they will follow a streamer but not take. It is the equivalent to a hopper with dropper setup. Hopper attracts the trout, but they take the dropper

There are as many ways to streamer fish as there are all of fishing. Or so it seems to me. And they are the only way to catch a number of non-trout. While sunfish love dries and wets and nymphs, I have yet to catch a large largemouth, or a striped bass, on a dry fly :-)

I caught a 10 inch trout on eggs and it had 2 inches of a small brown still hanging out its mouth I don't even know how it took the eggs but it did

Why do people fly fish over traditional? Its so much more work and way more expensive. What is the Advantage? Or is it more of a "Traditional" thing?
there is no advantage, the advantage goes to the bait or spinner fisherman. it's the challenge for me, fly fishing is way more challenging than other techniques.
Why spin fish, when it’s so much more work, and more expensive than gill netting, or using dynamite?
