Back about 1966 while Pat Johnson still lived in Niagara Falls I enrolled in a Tang Soo Do class at the YMCA that Pat taught. Enjoyed it a great deal. Pat opened a studio in Niagara Falls after the YMCA class and I took lessons there. Then suddenly Pat just disappeared and did not return to the school. No one knew where he was or any details, Later turned out he went out to California and joined up with Norris. It was a mystery for all of us for a while as to where he went or what was going on. Even his partner in the school professed to not know where he went. Maybe he knew but just did not want to tell us.

Mr. Johnson was a man of unimpeachable character, a rare and pure trait.

I remember sparing with Pat back in the Late 80s. I wanted to score on him SO bad! Somehow I got a sidekick in on him. I kinda cheated…it’s all a blur now. But someone took a picture of it! Pat called me a sneak and we’ll, he played around an pretty much destroyed me point wise. But he didn’t lose his temper. He was always kind to me and encouraging! Very grateful to him and Jan & Wes Tanner who helped me during such a difficult time.

I love Pat Johnson! He was one of Chuck Norris' top black belts. He fought nearly 200 hundred matches and only lost once. Pat is old school Tang Soo Do. Legit!

Anyone a counter fighter ?? What’s your favorite counter strike ?

In Tae Kwon Do, my two favorite counter strike techniques were rear leg jump turning side kick and lead leg front piercing kick (also called a lead thrust kick). Opponent feels like he just just (literally) ran into a battering ram.

1.Lead leg side kick to body. 2. Reverse punch to chest /sternum. 3.Lead arm backfist or jab to head. Fighting a pure counter fighter (like your Dad describes) 'small advance to trigger his counter technique' then any technique within range (esp those three above) after the counters been 'triggered' by that initial small shift forward. Occasionally a further slight forward shift is needed. One of the best points I got was exactly using that rear leg front kick as your Dad described as a 'counter-counter'.
