Body-boarding is so underrated. No matter the conditions, whether it’s sloppy or perfect, you can body-surf. It’s so much fun too, you can barrel through waves that surfers couldn’t even try to barrel through. I love surfing but I love body-boarding just as much.
I grew up body boarding in Hawaii because my mom wouldn't let me surf. I now just moved to Puerto Rico from Austin and am going to turn 50 - born in '71, same year as the 'boogie board.' :) Walked to the beach here at San Juan yesterday- new years and there was almost no one in the line up. Can't wait. Thanks for the post and a little history. *A.

Great job Andy. I'm a sailor, windsurfer and bodyboarder. Love for all ocean users, but it's great to get a spotlight on bodyboarding for a change. Hugo + legends + Pipeline + your ernest and engaging presentation = fantastic Red Bull film. Thank you! 😊
Seems most people are unaware that wood bodyboards existed long before the modern versions. I just made a new one like the one I rode as a teenager over '50 years ago. Took it out for the first time recently in Huntington Beach, & it was a blast. Thanks for posting this awesome vid!
Wow, this is so good. I remember body boarding as what I did on the New Jersey Shore as a kid. So cool to see the history of this sport and how extreme it actually is. Will there be more of these @redbull?
Great stuff. I have bodyboarded in both Cali and Hawaii and have only ever heard negative comments from surfers in California. Like the guy said, as long as you're having fun and respect the ocean and others, in Hawaii it's all aloha
That was awesome! You interviewed the perfect guys to talk about bodyboarding and surfing. I just wish you mentioned how Kainoa McGee could ride Pipe on a shortboard, longboard, SUP, and bodyboard, and how many titles Mike Stewart has won in bodysurfing too. Cheers.
Good video on body boarding. I recall when living on Oahu in the early to mid sixties the Waikiki Wall was my favorite hangout and would marvel at some of the kids STANDING up on Paipo Boards shaving the wall on the small waves. Some of the boards were just pieces of varnished plywood with a round nose, in fact I even saw a kid out there once using a McDonald's tray. Would love to see some recent body board foiling as it is still pretty scarce.
Yes!!I love this; it was so cool to learn about body surfing! All those legends mentioned!❤ Thank you redbull and all those involved in putting this together🤘
Man I grew up in Jupiter FL. And I have done both surfing and body boarding. I have to say I had more fun body boarding! I miss it actually! Great video!
When I was a kid in Hawaii in the 70’s we rode wooden “Paipo “boards for skim boarding and bodyboarding, then boogie boards came out... too expensive for us kids 😂🤙

Then Tom Morey made the first, and I got myself a 7-SS and then a Turbo Designs back in the 80s. Im 50 now still bboarding, was in PR this year riding Domes, and many spots. Ride on boys!@
Most bodyboarders know that bodyboarding is closed to the purest form of surfing, most surfers don’t. But remember the ocean is for everyone and if you’re having fun your getting it right.
It's a pity you didn't use much footage of the paipo riding and missed out on the whole history of foam and fiberglass paipos that were around before the boogieboard.
I own two of the first. Morey boogie body boards made by Tom morey in 73 .... 132 B.E They are kinda hammered but what would you expect after 47 yrs, Smithsonian material.
The body board was invented at honls beach. By Tom morey. Kailua kona hawaii. Super deadly wave .shallow. Hallow. spitting barrels. Surfing i pulled to backside 720 .right and left.we tore down the old shaping shack.made a beautiful beach .with the honls boys . Lyle. Krista .
What I was hoping to hear more about. The modern evolution of the sport. No just a blanket over view, This leaves a lot to be discussed in more detail. I used to ride Honl's, Old A's , etc. the birth places of modern body boarding.
