I stand corrected! I went back and watched the whole video and you are correct. I have never seen one with a side ballast cleaner in front of a undercutter. Huge would be a correct statement as well.
it does cut under the ties. you must not have watched the whole video. its an frm 802 shoulder cutter, a ballast pick up machine , 2 mfs 60's and an rm 802 undercutter all connected and working together in one consist. all together its one giant undercutter.
it is 16 years old, i cant get parts for the computer system anymore because it is out of date. the machine would need a multi million dollar, year long overhaul and a brand new computer system and rewiring to keep it going for more than a short time.
How can this machine be classified as an undercutter when it does not undercut the ballast from under the ties? I would classify this machine as a side ballast cleaner.

So THIS is why you can't find any decent chunks of coal or old railroad spikes along the tracks anymore...

it is rusting to the rail in the BNSF yard in Gillette, WY.
It is currently in Alliance NE. I was turning the wheels on it last night and will be again tonight.
I'm currently in alliance with it. I work on it.

about 1000 feet per hour faster but twice the size and a lot of maintenance

Take a closer look at (9:40. Tell me that isn't removing ballast from underneath the ties and rail.
