    My dear sir, you are a genius! I believe you have solved every workholding dilemma imaginable! That solution for the tail vise with two sliding dog blocks, essentially creating two wagon vises, along with the full capability of a twin screw on the back unobstructed by the L shaped dog block section of a true tail vise but incorporating all the functionality and then some… absolutely amazing! Well done! I’m currently in design phase for a workbench and have been researching all the possibilities for tail base selection and the search is now officially over!

    This is beautiful! The craftsmanship is excellent. I especially appreciate your humility admitting your mistakes. However I do not understand why there are through slots in the middle of the bench, that is running the center of the bench top. Finally, I would like to see a video of someone build a roubo bench using only hand tools, like craftsman did 300 hundred years ago.

    What is the benefits of the wagon style vise over putting dogs in the vice jaw?

  • @davidperfette1425
    @davidperfette1425 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice bench! But why is that wagon vise better than putting dog holes in the vise jaw itself? The wood you're working on pops out more often with the dog holed jaw rather than the wagon vise? Why would that be? Any other benefits as well?

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, the benefit is having more than just a lip in front of the dog on the vice. With the wagon vise I have several inches of solid material under the piece I’m clamping, and solid workbench on either side of the vise. The other thing is that the dog hole doesn’t collect sawdust like it does in a vise that you can’t drill all the way through on.

    • @EastOakWoodworking

      I didn’t add it all up, but 75% of the cost is the lumber and that changes depending on where you live, where you get it, and what lumber you choose.

    Really great bench build series and a very clever design!
    May I ask how your impression with the Hovarter leg vice and x-link system is? Does it resist sideways racking well?
    Thank you

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The jury is still out on the Hovarter vise, but so far I’d give it 4 stars. The clamping pressure isn’t what I had hoped without really cranking it down, but that may be as much about the cork rubber I used to line the vise jaw, or my alignment. Sideways racking resistance is what I would expect. I will say that customer support was very good.

  • @JamesWilliams-en3os
    @JamesWilliams-en3os 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice bench, and very clean workmanship. The full width tail vise is a smart feature. I recently purchased a Sjoberg vise to use as a tail vise on my new bench, which isn’t as cool as the “twin turbo” vise (nice name, but where exactly does he fit the turbo-superchargers in there? 😜) but is a very pretty precise rack-proof vise some viewers might want to consider as a slightly less expensive alternative to Andy’s great vise. The use of the magnets/switches to incorporate a wagon vise concept without sacrificing full-width clamping in the tail vise is a really smart idea! Where do you find those mag switches? I think I’ll want to incorporate those into my new bench as well. Thanks again, great video, well shot and edited, and superb content.

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James. I did look at other vise options as well, but I’ll admit the cool factor of those gears may have had a small influence on my decision making. You can pick up the mag switches from Amazon (I think I may have left a link in the description) but you can also get them right from their website as well.

    Sweet bench! I dont know much about fancy work benches, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but whats the point of the split top?

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The split top does a couple things, the primary one is that it makes it easier to clamp something to the bench. Instead of just the edges, you can clamp in the middle too. The gap stop makes for good tool holding, and a good work stop as well

  • @dsalazar6135
    @dsalazar6135 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question How do you keep the sawdust out of the gears?

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plexiglass plate closes it off on the top. There’s also enough tolerance in the gears that sawdust wouldn’t be an issue anyway.

  • @alessandrosuppini943
    @alessandrosuppini943 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant!
    I’m thinking of getting myself one as well and I thought the 20” was more appropriate but from your video it looks like the smaller one works just fine and based on your installation you didn’t have to put the 2 degree slipe on the bottom of the vise face, is that right?

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With my bench being 24” wide, I checked and the 20” would be too big for me. The 14” was perfect. And you are correct, I didn’t end up needing the 2 degrees.

  • @nutsmcflurry3737
    @nutsmcflurry3737 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wouldn't call it a hybrid, but you have used the best of many bench designs that I've researched.
    The addition of the twin magnetic tail vises is all yours, beautiful.
    Visually I don't like the appearance of the mag switches on all that good looking wood.
    What do you think of having the magnets buried in your wagon the same as you did, but instead of the mag switches, insert another magnet from the end of the vise chop in a drilled hole? It could be pushed in with a dowel and pulled out with a bit of metal attached to the other end.

    • @EastOakWoodworking
      @EastOakWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Something like that could definitely work. You could probably also just have two sets of magnets, or one and a metal plate. The trick would be to get the attraction strong enough to pull the wagon vise out, but week enough that if you put the pin in place to hold the wagon vise the tail vise would still open easily

    • @nutsmcflurry3737
      @nutsmcflurry3737 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EastOakWoodworking www.kjmagnetics.com/blog.asp?p=magnets-vs-steel#:~:text=If%20the%20steel%20is%20big,to%20a%20second%2C%20identical%20magnet.&text=When%20you%20handle%20a%20magnet,a%20magnet%20to%20another%20magnet. This was an interesting read on the subject.
      If the second magnet was removed out the end of the vise, would you still need the lock pins? There's nothing for the buried magnet to pull against, unless it was pulling against the end vise itself.
