In India, if exam is tough, it doesn't mean that you will get proportional luxury. IIT entrance is tough but none of IITs ranks in top 100 technical institutes. I could't do BTech or MTech from IIT but I'm leading better life in USA after doing MS in USA, from one of the top 100 technical institutes; an institute far better than IITs.

I didn't aim to boast anything. My only point is that IITs don't deserve the prestige what they are getting. IITs are more famous for their tough entrance, nothing else! I wonder how many international students/ professors they have; research works/ patents, open source projects, PhDs, inter connectivity, quality of hostel, classes? One can do better education from US universities far better than IITs with easier entrance exams. If apply smartly it can be cheaper than studying in IITs too.
