Very fascinating game, sadly I never got to play it at the time but I did watch my older brother play it a lot. I think this game and Mechwarrior 3 are some of the best games that came out before the millennia came to a close. I miss these old days, games of this era had a lot more spirit and creativity than current generation games.
Yet another retro game that I played 20 years ago! It’s interesting how detailed the gear customization and mission planning was in the Heavy Gear games. Thanks for posting this!
calling 1999 games retro makes me feel like i've already turned into oil. Heavy Gear 2 was the game of my childhood and these gears still keep inspiring me today. pure fucking art.
Heavy gear first started as a miniature war game, and a pen and paper RPG system. i used to collect them when i was a kid. have a bunch of source books. very interesting universe.
The gears of this game at the hangar screen are pure fucking art. the most beautiful thing ever created in a video game. Amazing brother, thank you so much for this upload. this game made my childhood. and from adult perspective it's astounding how much work and innovation the developers put to this game. the gear modification, the amount of different weapons, stealth, space combat, team communication - this game really deserved so much more recognition it ever got. and oh man it does NEED a real Heavy Gear 3-sequel faithful to the true military atmosphere of Heavy Gear 2. just imagine all of this but with modern graphics and physics. the only minus sides of this game is the campaign, which is almost exclusively fought in barren red planet where there is no trees or nature of any kind, and where there are almost no GEARS even though it's literally called heavy gear. although i must say the campaign is story-wise written amazingly well, every mission briefing and after report giving you more, pushing the store forward in realistic military setting and being insanely fascinating to read. you don't see this level of campaign writing anymore. and the other types of war machines in the game, which felt way too easy, kind of target dummies posing no real threat to the player. it's understandable it would have been practical impossibility with 1999 computing to create game where tanks and airplanes were full realistic respective to each other - it would simply have been too massive game for the computers of that age. but even more so they should have included more gear vs gear warfare in the campaign. i wish so much we would get Heavy Gear 3 or identical game some day. ps. can you win the game without exploiting SMS and bugs like the abnormally short visual detection range of Frames when using ECM? 😉those really make the game false easy, because the AI isn't clever enough to aim you at 100kph, and i'm pretty sure the Frame encounters, Paladin Lots especially, wasn't ment to be played like that, just rolling right in front of their faces without them noticing :D
@@blazejames47 Yeah someone over in reddit repacked the game to be playable on modern PCs. Check link in description. Follow the repack readme instructions and you should have a working game.
This was bad enough on the old CD with Windows XP - the people who can get these antiques running on modern hardware are wizards as far as I'm concerned.
How'd you get the music working? I couldn't get it working during my playthrough, so I would just queue up a track off the CD before playing a mission. Thanks for sharing this, I just subscribed!
Thanks. For the music to play in game, you need to create a file named "config.ear" without quotes in C:\Windows directory. Using your favourite text editor, paste the following lines in the file: [GLOBAL] PTARGET=1096 ITARGET=ffff VERSION=13a GNOIAS=1 TEST=11000000 CDMIXER=0 MIDIMIXER=0 DVDDRIVE=0 CHANGER=0 MULTI=0 CDLINE=0 MIDILINE=0 [VXKVVSTK] TITLE=Heavy_Gear_II NOIAS=0 TIMES=1 CDSRC=N/A CDDEV=0 CDNUM=0 ISDVD=0
Hey man, got one question. Used that repack from your links and the game launches just fine, but for some reason my mouse only works in the menus (like, i can navigate the menu with my mouse but for some goddamn reason not look around or aim with it ingame) and all the keybindings which use 2 keys also don't work. Did you get any similar problems or have any idea how to fix this ?
@@mikolajpuchalski2946 anyone wondering how this is fixed, you have to go into game settings and look for the aim setup and remap it to mouse axis manually. i had the same problem when I installed the game. i don't have the game at my setup anymore and if i recall correctly it was somehow sketchy, like having two similar binds which you needed to choose the correct ones or something like that. also i think the mapper didn't read the mouse movement very well so u needed to shake the mouse like stupid for it to catch :D but it's a key mapping thing nonetheless.
Simply put, ECM makes your gear stealthier, so you are less likely to get targeted or detected by enemy active scanners. It can probably also be used to break missile locks. ECCM negates the effect of ECM.

This game has a fun easter egg on Christmas Day, the tutorial Gears will have santa hats
Haha that's cute, too bad I never caught that when I used to play

Is historical missions based on Heavy Gear I missions?
i loved this game
I have this original on CD and can’t get it to run :(
Yeah it was a pain. You may try running with dgvoodoo, or better off just getting the repacked game, unfortunately.

Can't believe I just found out about these series. A shame about Heavy Gear assault. We don't get a lot of Mech games anymore.
imagine the potential of what a realistic mech war simulation/combat game with modern era graphics and physics had.
Im still fking pissed about hga the worst part is that the devs could do very little :/
