Paradise. I have been into and out of The Philippines for well over 50 years. I Iove living in the islands, using in a hybrid lifestyle. I have seen the islands go up in price over those years. I remember when a ride on a jeepney was just 15 centavos. Today that same ride is 10 pesos. I remember when chicken and pork were just 20 to 25 pesos a kilo. Today the price is near 200 pesos a kilo. I love being able to go to the market and speak in English. I like driving on the right side of the road. The islands are very safe. Crime is rampant in America. I know many who live well, such as in Forbes Park. I made many friends in the islands. I love the manner in which you present both the positive and negative aspects of the islands of paradise. Tuli, l do not think that you are catholic, but l may be wrong. I do believe that you are a good and decent Christian. I love Filipino Food. I am not a huge rice eater but l do like pansit and many other Filipinos dishes. But Tuli, l must confess, l miss green salad. As l traveled the islands l found many different cultures in the islands. You are very wise and observant for a man who is so young. CHEAP? They are kidding, my Arab and Russian friend from Abu Dhabi who visited the Philippines before the pandemic tells me it is getting EXPENSIVE in the Philippines, before they said they can GET cheap accommodations NOW all is expensive.
Exactly! PH is not dirt cheap anymore. It comes with the huge development the country is having. It's affordable but NOT cheap. Especially if we are looking for the western kind of life. Lifestyle is the key that dictates how much you truly need just like any other countries.
I am an American have been living in a province of the Philippines for 21 years. I appreciate this video as being very realistic. My one advice to any expat coming here to live is to take your time. Do not make commitments, financially nor relationship wise, for at least a year. Listen to advice of other expats who have been here for a while. Its a nice country but there are many nuances an expat maybe unaware of. Take your time and be prepared to learn new ways and the differences.
I’ve got a condo in Davao City. I feel so much safer there than I do in the UK. The people are nicer, the weather is better, the culture is nicer and the country is beautiful. The reason I’m retiring to the Philippines one day is because of the most important factor of all - the people. I’ve never met nicer people anywhere in the world.

Agree again; I live in the US and travel a lot here in the states. Often people are high stressed and high strung here, looking for a reason to be offended and lash out. The Philippines, observing from here, seems like Mayberry (low stress, relaxed and friendly).

The government seeks to act in the best interests of its citizens through this system of check and balance. Vietnam : Socialist republic with a fairly authoritarian government Cambodia : constitutional monarchy Thailand : constitutional monarchy (currently under military rule due to coup)
Gonna clear up your misconceptions. Children playing outside is not a sign of safety but of poverty. Here in my neighborhood Its perfectly safe. Kids never play outside. Because they're fat and lazy and the outside doesn't have AC. Viet-Nam is a COMMUNIST country. Only Americans deny this because they can't stand knowing they lost the war to communists. Get over it. You lost. Its a communist country.

Bingo. 90% of the time I hear something negative about the Philippines it's from born and raised Filipinos that have moved abroad, meanwhile expats have better things to say about the country....
The only scary thing about ph are the holdapers you can encounter them any time on the jeepney/taxi they are pretty much everywhere day or night some cities in manila are not safe compared to provinces
I agree with you. I wouldn't want to live dirt cheap there. If I was to live in The Philippines, I would want my budget to be around $3,000 every month. Like you said, I wouldn't want to just exist. So I think it would be a good idea to prepare to have a higher budget.

When I was there in 2016, I was shocked to find people buying items for Canadian full price. At least here, shops have sales. I want to go home to live simpler and eat healthier.
People in the West are considered rich here in Asia but when I look deep down a lot of them are credit card rich. Without that credit card, financing or leasing they won't be able to afford most stuff like cars. In the Philippines the well off are cash rich as they can buy properties and businesses without a bank loan especially when mortgage rates are at 9%. This is why they say cash is king in Manila. People in the West brag about their credit scores like it's some kind of trophy which I find very amusing.
Exactly. I never would have guessed but there's a lot more silent millionaires here than most people know. Well, I guess that's their objective - that they don't know.
The rich here doesn't really lile to show off their wealth. I think it's due to security reasons, and the rich usually dresses like they just went put for a coffee.
I found the Philippines to be safer for me, even alone, than the places I have lived in Southern California. I have found the Philippines to be cheaper to live than in Southern California, due to the exchange rate. I have found very few Filippinos who do speak English in Nueva Ecija, most get "nosebleeds when attempting.

Just want to share a realistic POV to your viewers. The 1-bedroom that we rent in the "nicer side" of L.A. costs $1,700 per month. In Metro Manila, I can find something comparable in a similar community/neighborhood for PhP15,000 ($300). HOWEVER, you have to keep in mind that in L.A., the minimum wage is $11/hour, which is basically the minimum wage in Metro Manila FOR ONE DAY (8 hours). So for context, you would have to earn the equivalent of close to $11-PER-HOUR in METRO MANILA to afford that kind of lifestyle.

I know wearing a ball cap to avoid low hanging things ganging over items. I have learned that l am too tall to fit in many vehicles. I like fast food at the Food Courts. I feel safe in the province and also Manila and Cebu. I saw a lot of Muslims in Manila and even in the province. I love this channel.
As everything continues to open up post-covid I'd be more concerned as to the potential or rate of the rising cost of living in general for a current or near-future retiree. As a growing destination in terms of popularity, it would seem this could possibly become a concern for the future or a motivator for areas outside the cities or in some of the provinces to compete keeping some of the pricing points at bay mainly rents.
11. Living in the province is cheap. Many use the word province when what they really mean is boondocks. We live in the province on Cebu, barely, right outside of Cebu City, and it isn't cheap. When I moved here 15 years ago, the Philippines seemed dirt cheap to me. The exchange rate didn't really matter. When it dropped to P40/$1 in 2008, it cost me a little more, but I hardly even felt it, and we just had a baby in January. That's definitely no longer the case. Almost everything here costs more than twice what it did in 2007/2008. A liter bottle of beer at the sari sari went from P48 to more than P100. P5.75 per KWH for electricity is now more than P12. Etc. It wouldn't cost much more for us to live where I was living in the USA, and I had at one point planned to move us there. But none of us, including our now 14-year-old daughter, want to leave the Philippines.

It is expensive to live in the Philippines, for example, the Levi pants cost you 2,500 pesos up and equivalent to 50 dol , condominium for 24 sq m(258 sq foot) cost you 5 Million pesos up to 10 M depends on location equivalent to 100 thousand dol to 200 thousand. So think if you want to live in the Philippines. It is hot and humid too.
YES, you have to be careful and smart. We live in Antipolo City in a beautiful 2br 2ba apartment for only $326. Per month. We shop at Maylor's wet market to save on the food budget. I noticed you inserted pictures of expats who make travel vlogs about the Philippines because I saw men and women who tell about how it is like to live in our country- Becoming Filipino, Making It Happen, Eight Miles From Home and may I add Kumander Daot, Travelling Nomads, Travelling Clatt, etc.?
Big yes to #10! According to Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the Philippines has over 180 languages. And plus, the rice terrace culture of the Igorot people is very different to the folk Catholic culture of the Tagalog people, which is ALSO very different to the many Muslim ethnic groups of the south that have their own cultures and foods and so on. As for #9, there are definitely more "exotic foods" than you realize. Like mangrove worm in Palawan, etag in the highlands, plus spicy food of Mindanao etc.
It would be great if you're employed in a Western country with Western wages and telecommuting from the Ph, that is the best work setup I can think of. Like if your employer is in Europe but you're remotely working from Boracay. I actually have a friend who does exactly that.
@@barthalomew_4096 Starting with the basics; Choose a career that's 100% computer-based, like WebDev, Tech Support (voice), Graphic design, etc. Then get employed directly because bpo's are generally required by law to have you come to a physical establishment (currently under negotiation) depending on the work requirement. Being employed directly skips this requirement which means you can work wherever you like. You might be filing you own taxes though.
I think I prefer the term misconception to lies. I can tell you mother thinks all of those things, LOL. I only mentioned living in the Philippines once to her, big mistake! 🤣🤣 She still has trouble with me just visiting.
I always say if you're going to buy American,, whether it's food, clothes, Footwear buy the stuff in American bring it over with you, you'll save money. As far as the Philippines being Dirt Cheap, no, but it is cheaper. You can do things there that you can't do here and still save a few bucks As far as food, I wouldn't try steak outside of Manila or Cebu, I've done that and it's been very unimpressive. Also, if you're kind of new to the Philippines stay away from the street food, work your way up to it.
Steak is a foreign concept for Filipinos, most of us doesn't even know what it supposed to taste/feel like. But I can easily bet that you will enjoy Filipino style pork barbecue skewers more than the times you had steak outside Manila/Cebu. If you guys really wanted steak while you're staying in the Ph, just have it from American steakhouses in the malls.
The best reason to live in the phillipines is the people they have the friendliest people in the world not to mention the most beautiful women in the world besides being a beautiful country👍🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
My wife and i are going to the Philippines soon shes been oyt of the country for a while now. do you know if verizon works out there with international calls texts and web use? Or have you heard from exapts that visit?
For staying in touch with family/friends outside the Philippines, I would use the online apps like zoom, google meet, FB messenger, whatsapp, etc. It will save you on roaming charges. I would get a local sim card and use that instead of using Verizon out here.
Born and raised in Mindanao, where the media set all the scary story about the Philippines. The occassions where I was grabbed and groped happened in the subways of New York. When I moved to Vancouver, I rented an apartment that turned out to be a scam. Several years later, my apartement in downtown Richmond, where it was more common to see Benzes and Bimmers than Toyotas, was broken into. Electronics and jewelries taken. So when people say the Philippines is dangerous, I ask them what grimmy side street they were intending to stay at.
I actually feel more safe here (Manila) than in Berlin - but I do not go in small streets. My partner told me that - athough I am safe here...one should not go in these little streets alone. What do you think?

I am with you 100%. Cheap is not. Unless you live in the boonies with no air con, running water ect..... Manila is not cheap, but will never move to the boonies, nothing to do there. rather stay in the USA
PHILIPPINES was ruled by the spaniards for 333 years while Americans only ruled the Philippines for decade and half, because after 1935 after the Jones act allowing the FILIPINOs to govern themselves and in 1945 gain full independence. The main reason why FILIPINOs learn to speak english because it is taught in schools. Just the same in Cambodia and other countries where the schools taught students to learn second language that they can use as a skill. It's not just about the FILIPINOs learn to speak english because Americans colonize the country, it because it is taught in our schools.
They must learn the pressure when it comes to education here in the Philippines coz I have experienced it myself and the ironic thing about it when it comes to foreigner we are the ones who are adjusting for them like we are Filipinos we're speaking Tagalog and dialects but why we have to speak English so that foreigners would able to understand us? The funny thing, and out of American civilization there's a misconception when it comes to the standard of beauty. In school, we were convinced to speak and learn American English coz that was one of our subject and we used that as our medium of instruction such as in Science, Mathematics, MAPEH, if there is a Filipino subject there must also an English subject and Filipino is quiet harder than of English tbh, Filipino is quiet difficult coz it's deep and very complex. Even in the Philippine government, in the senate/congress, they speak English there, whenever there are events, English is simply everywhere as long as the people are civilized but with the remote areas ofcourse you have a less expectation there that they are fluent or knows how to speak/understands English.
But learning English did us, Filipinos, really good because that’s one of the reasons why we are good at adjusting in foreign countries and better in learning other languages besides English. Yes, Filipino language is really hard especially we don’t have exact words for technical terms unlike other languages that’s why we need to borrow foreign words. I am personally fine adjusting to foreigners here for their convenience but what I despised is when they “demand” that I do their ways or speak their language. My foreigner boss yelled at the Grab driver over the phone for not speaking English lol.
Maybe you could do more videos of how you and your friends enjoy life. Would a college educated Filippina from a middleclass family date a expat? It seems that the expats go for the poor girls.

It's the same all over the world. The girls want the guys with the hot cars and letter jackets and the guys want the looks or good personality. In highschool I dated the future runner up in the Miss Miami contest for two years after she asked me if I wanted to go on a date. Personally I have found that ten years should be the maximum difference in age for a relationship to last.
You can easily date a college educated middleclass Filipina thru traditional introductions by close relatives or trusted friends. These girls don't look for potential boyfriends thru the internet.

Filipina teen here. I haven't experienced interacting with black people in person but from what I see online, a lot of them honestly seem to be confident, fun to be with, lively, and good at singing.
If you mean independent churches, non- denominational churches then there are lots of them and they emerged in the 80s, I think. If you are in Metro Manila you will see there are lots of them, big or small congregations. Victory Christian Fellowship, Jesus Is Lord Church, Cathedral of Praise, Greenhills Christian Fellowship, to name just a few.
"The Philippines is Dirt Poor" Actually, the Philippines is reaching an "Upper Middle Class" wealth status this year in Asia. It may have seemed very poor back in the 90s when the financial crisis was going on (Thanks Marcos!) But it has been growing and is still rapidly growing today. Also, America is starting to decline. That amazing exchange rate that makes us feel so rich won't be there forever. I also noticed that the Philippines is kind of like the opposite of America. In America, everything is cheap except labor. But in the Philippines, everything is relatively expensive other than labor. That USD gets us good products from China but we can't pay anyone to do anything. The major benefit to the Philippines is being able to have work done for you for way less than if you're home. But you get slammed hard with basic things like electricity, TVs, internet.

People in the West are considered rich here in Asia but when I look deep down a lot of them are credit card rich. Without that credit card, financing or leasing they won't be able to afford most stuff like cars. In the Philippines the well off are cash rich as they can buy properties and businesses without a bank loan especially when mortgage rates are at 9%. This is why they say cash is king in Manila. People in the West brag about their credit scores like it's some kind of trophy which I find very amusing.

The rich here doesn't really lile to show off their wealth. I think it's due to security reasons, and the rich usually dresses like they just went put for a coffee.
I found the Philippines to be safer for me, even alone, than the places I have lived in Southern California. I have found the Philippines to be cheaper to live than in Southern California, due to the exchange rate. I have found very few Filippinos who do speak English in Nueva Ecija, most get "nosebleeds when attempting.

Just want to share a realistic POV to your viewers. The 1-bedroom that we rent in the "nicer side" of L.A. costs $1,700 per month. In Metro Manila, I can find something comparable in a similar community/neighborhood for PhP15,000 ($300). HOWEVER, you have to keep in mind that in L.A., the minimum wage is $11/hour, which is basically the minimum wage in Metro Manila FOR ONE DAY (8 hours). So for context, you would have to earn the equivalent of close to $11-PER-HOUR in METRO MANILA to afford that kind of lifestyle.

As everything continues to open up post-covid I'd be more concerned as to the potential or rate of the rising cost of living in general for a current or near-future retiree. As a growing destination in terms of popularity, it would seem this could possibly become a concern for the future or a motivator for areas outside the cities or in some of the provinces to compete keeping some of the pricing points at bay mainly rents.
11. Living in the province is cheap.
Many use the word province when what they really mean is boondocks. We live in the province on Cebu, barely, right outside of Cebu City, and it isn't cheap. When I moved here 15 years ago, the Philippines seemed dirt cheap to me. The exchange rate didn't really matter. When it dropped to P40/$1 in 2008, it cost me a little more, but I hardly even felt it, and we just had a baby in January. That's definitely no longer the case. Almost everything here costs more than twice what it did in 2007/2008. A liter bottle of beer at the sari sari went from P48 to more than P100. P5.75 per KWH for electricity is now more than P12. Etc. It wouldn't cost much more for us to live where I was living in the USA, and I had at one point planned to move us there. But none of us, including our now 14-year-old daughter, want to leave the Philippines.

It is expensive to live in the Philippines, for example, the Levi pants cost you 2,500 pesos up and equivalent to 50 dol , condominium for 24 sq m(258 sq foot) cost you 5 Million pesos up to 10 M depends on location equivalent to 100 thousand dol to 200 thousand. So think if you want to live in the Philippines. It is hot and humid too.

I went to Cebu Philippines Jan 2020, amazing and cheap! Food transport, beer , and almost anything, was very cheap.
YES, you have to be careful and smart. We live in Antipolo City in a beautiful 2br 2ba apartment for only $326. Per month. We shop at Maylor's wet market to save on the food budget. If you start shopping in the supermarket and malls, you are in trouble. Good luck to all who make the Philippines your new home.

According to Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the Philippines has over 180 languages.
And plus, the rice terrace culture of the Igorot people is very different to the folk Catholic culture of the Tagalog people, which is ALSO very different to the many Muslim ethnic groups of the south that have their own cultures and foods and so on.
As for #9, there are definitely more "exotic foods" than you realize. Like mangrove worm in Palawan, etag in the highlands, plus spicy food of Mindanao etc.
It would be great if you're employed in a Western country with Western wages and telecommuting from the Ph, that is the best work setup I can think of. Like if your employer is in Europe but you're remotely working from Boracay. I actually have a friend who does exactly that.

@@barthalomew_4096 Starting with the basics; Choose a career that's 100% computer-based, like WebDev, Tech Support (voice), Graphic design, etc. Then get employed directly because bpo's are generally required by law to have you come to a physical establishment (currently under negotiation) depending on the work requirement. Being employed directly skips this requirement which means you can work wherever you like. You might be filing you own taxes though.

I always say if you're going to buy American,, whether it's food, clothes, Footwear buy the stuff in American bring it over with you, you'll save money. As far as the Philippines being Dirt Cheap, no, but it is cheaper. You can do things there that you can't do here and still save a few bucks
As far as food, I wouldn't try steak outside of Manila or Cebu, I've done that and it's been very unimpressive. Also, if you're kind of new to the Philippines stay away from the street food, work your way up to it.
Steak is a foreign concept for Filipinos, most of us doesn't even know what it supposed to taste/feel like.
But I can easily bet that you will enjoy Filipino style pork barbecue skewers more than the times you had steak outside Manila/Cebu.
If you guys really wanted steak while you're staying in the Ph, just have it from American steakhouses in the malls.

For staying in touch with family/friends outside the Philippines, I would use the online apps like zoom, google meet, FB messenger, whatsapp, etc. It will save you on roaming charges. I would get a local sim card and use that instead of using Verizon out here.
What would you like to know? Verizon will only work if it's a GSM phone with a SIM card. It's easy to pick up a local SIM and enjoy our low prices.

Born and raised in Mindanao, where the media set all the scary story about the Philippines. The occassions where I was grabbed and groped happened in the subways of New York. When I moved to Vancouver, I rented an apartment that turned out to be a scam. Several years later, my apartement in downtown Richmond, where it was more common to see Benzes and Bimmers than Toyotas, was broken into. Electronics and jewelries taken. So when people say the Philippines is dangerous, I ask them what grimmy side street they were intending to stay at.

PHILIPPINES was ruled by the spaniards for 333 years while Americans only ruled the Philippines for decade and half, because after 1935 after the Jones act allowing the FILIPINOs to govern themselves and in 1945 gain full independence.
The main reason why FILIPINOs learn to speak english because it is taught in schools. Just the same in Cambodia and other countries where the schools taught students to learn second language that they can use as a skill.
It's not just about the FILIPINOs learn to speak english because Americans colonize the country, it because it is taught in our schools.

They must learn the pressure when it comes to education here in the Philippines coz I have experienced it myself and the ironic thing about it when it comes to foreigner we are the ones who are adjusting for them like we are Filipinos we're speaking Tagalog and dialects but why we have to speak English so that foreigners would able to understand us? The funny thing, and out of American civilization there's a misconception when it comes to the standard of beauty. In school, we were convinced to speak and learn American English coz that was one of our subject and we used that as our medium of instruction such as in Science, Mathematics, MAPEH, if there is a Filipino subject there must also an English subject and Filipino is quiet harder than of English tbh, Filipino is quiet difficult coz it's deep and very complex. Even in the Philippine government, in the senate/congress, they speak English there, whenever there are events, English is simply everywhere as long as the people are civilized but with the remote areas ofcourse you have a less expectation there that they are fluent or knows how to speak/understands English.
But learning English did us, Filipinos, really good because that’s one of the reasons why we are good at adjusting in foreign countries and better in learning other languages besides English.
Yes, Filipino language is really hard especially we don’t have exact words for technical terms unlike other languages that’s why we need to borrow foreign words.
I am personally fine adjusting to foreigners here for their convenience but what I despised is when they “demand” that I do their ways or speak their language. My foreigner boss yelled at the Grab driver over the phone for not speaking English lol.

Yes, there are. There are various Christian beliefs here, not just Catholics, Baptist, etc.
If you mean independent churches, non- denominational churches then there are lots of them and they emerged in the 80s, I think. If you are in Metro Manila you will see there are lots of them, big or small congregations. Victory Christian Fellowship, Jesus Is Lord Church, Cathedral of Praise, Greenhills Christian Fellowship, to name just a few.

Actually, the Philippines is reaching an "Upper Middle Class" wealth status this year in Asia. It may have seemed very poor back in the 90s when the financial crisis was going on (Thanks Marcos!) But it has been growing and is still rapidly growing today. Also, America is starting to decline. That amazing exchange rate that makes us feel so rich won't be there forever.
I also noticed that the Philippines is kind of like the opposite of America. In America, everything is cheap except labor. But in the Philippines, everything is relatively expensive other than labor. That USD gets us good products from China but we can't pay anyone to do anything. The major benefit to the Philippines is being able to have work done for you for way less than if you're home. But you get slammed hard with basic things like electricity, TVs, internet.
