Hi David, my 1974 came yesterday. Just through the first tests I almost crapped my pants!!!!!!! Man that's unbelievable! In combination with the tegeler creme it's almost a crime!!!!!! Thank you very much for these demos, I may tend to bankruptcy but it's so beautiful!!!!!!
Nice review as always. Just picked up a used Kush Electra for $800--which sounds great so far but recall is a bit problematic. If the Electra doesn't work out, the 1974 sounds like a good alternative. For those asking about analog vs. plugin EQs, the only way to really appreciate what good analog EQs can do over software is to just hear it for yourself.
Hello , David I bought the 1974 and got it yesterday. I needed something for my mixes under a grand and this is it. After trying it for some mixes i am doing this has an amazing tone to it. Such a great stereo eq i am going to prob do a lite review my self for this unit once i get used to it a bit. Glad you made a review i would have not known about it.
Great demo!..... Good stereo bus EQs are hard to come by, and trying to tweak two channels equally is a real pain. Aside from studio use, I also want one at home for playing back vinyl LPs. Many older LPs need re-equalization to sound their best, and this EQ looks like it would be great for that. I currently use a Vintage Audio Skyline M3D, which is sort of like a stereo Maag EQ3 with 6 wide stereo bands. It's very nice, but this Drawmer is on my wish list now... and the price is right!
I found a cool trick with this unit on metal guitars where you use the peak filter in the low end to boost around 85hz ( depends on the range the guitars are tuned to) but it just gives you a bit of that moving air feeling you get off a live cabinet in the room (which I feel is lacking in a lot of productions). Anyways just thought I would share, also like you always say - you absolutely NEED low end on the sides, especially for metal guitars!
Always love your reviews David... no talking and letting the gear speak for itself so huge. I never really considered Drawmer for my 2 buss EQ but your review is giving me some pause. I'm also looking at the Bettermaker Master EQ. Have your worked with that?
I was waiting for more than 10 minutes (1974) so you would turn the octave knob in low- mid section for some juicy wide mid range boost, haha. But it was worth it. It's not API 5500 but it sure can be more than the right stuff if tweaked right. Great video!
Love your product reviews of the Drawmer gear, such a great value and results, I'm likely going to order three of their units. I'm uncertain as to the best signal flow order to put the 1974, 1976, and 1978 for tracking and mixing and would be curious to know what you'd recommend since you've had experience with all of them. Thanks!
How would you compare 1974 to Elysia Xfilter? Is this good unit for mastering EDM as a second eq unit to add some "mojo" to the mix or it's more of a rock thing in your opinion? Some people complain about the "harsh" highs etc. Elysia is nice sounding almost too perfect, this looks like a bad boy of equalizers, haha. p.s. And why is "the headroom" (26db or higher) in EQ so important I'm looking for this explanation all over the web ... ? They have now "mastering version with more headroom ..., but what it does, is it just (again and again...) a specs marketing thing? Thanks ...
The xfilter (original, don't know what changed in the mastering version) had no headroom. I love Elysia products but that one was really not it. It would run out of headroom earlier then pretty much anything else, even when cutting. Rack version was the same. And no, headroom is everything, not a marketing gimmick. The 74 is a great budget eq, better than the x, and you have to spend quite a lot more to pass it. And it's super versatile.
@@mixbustv I'm still reading about this "headroom" and it's giving me a "headache" 😄 One guy wrote: "Headroom is where you go when you are reading in the red on the VU meter. Is the device you are feeding going to clip at those increased levels ... That where the headroom comes in." And: "I'm afraid the gear with a later position in the signal flow should have a larger headroom than previous gear." So, can you avoid this "headroom disaster" if you before entering into digital domain (via A/D converter) with your mastering chain that has EQ with a lower headroom spec. in it just lower the overall gain (level match everything) so it doesn't reach the 0 db point, the point of distortion? You leave some little space ... I just can't believe I'm still looking, thinking about this, haha.
Nice video David!!! I have a nube question for you(If you have time to answer), can we send in stereo eq or comp (outboard gear) mono signal? Thank you!!!
Would be interesting to see you do a review on the Charter Oak PEQ-1, which is another stereo stereo EQ that has gotten a lot of great reviews over the years for mixbus tone shaping and mastering duties. Have you ever used one?
This Drawmer is really flexible! Looking to scoop up a great first piece of hardware by summer time. This is now on my contending list lol. Do you have any videos for that elysia?
I don't use this in mastering no. My main eq in mastering is the SPL PQ. Then Empress, API 5500 or MAAG for color, Symph for filters. All analog. I only use Weiss EQ1 as plugin
@@mixbustv I want the PQ so damn bad but it's a hit in the ol wallet. I currently use the plugin and it's wonderful. Weiss EQ1 over fab filter? Just curious. You're a beast for actually replying to my questions btw. This is what sets you apart, genuinely, not to mention the amazing content and real information.
Very nice! Thanks for the info. Would you say this would be overkill for vocal tracking? I'm assuming you could just use the input // output of one side only? Or would you consider another type of shaping eq for vocal? thanks!
No such a think as overkill, if you overuse it that's overkill :D I personally don't eq vocals on the way in, aside from maybe a bit of top end (+ or -) but if you don't have a large selection of mics and or your setup is not that great, a parametric like this can save the day
@@mixbustv Thank you as always for the response! Would you recommend this for the "surgical non coloured" portion of my individual instruments mix / master or the Elysia? Both will be followed up wes audio prometheus for colour (sold me on your prometheus demo)!
i'm still on the fence about buying 1974, but I think I'll go for it. Now I read from one guy on the net that it has a "noisy circuitry"? is that true, kind of unbelivable ... ?
I just had it delivered, I like it 👍 Im using it to sweeten final mixes. Much nicer sound and easier to get good results compared to fiddling around with plugins.
Well they're very very different. Symph usually sits on my 2buss, use the filters all the time, the actual eq like 2-3 times out of 10, but I also have SPL PQ or MAAG mastering version or Empress for 2bus. the 74 is usually on a group or single tracks. Symph is sweet, pretty colored but limited, 74 is a workhorse and full parametric
Great review, we can truely listen to what the beast does on multiple styles and individual sources. Maybe it's gonna be a dumb question but is this EQ can be used in mono for recording sessions ? like shaping a bass at the recording ?
David please help , i need EQ for my mastering chain , I have Silver Bullet and want to insert Eq , i am into EDM/TRAP - bass heavy music in general . What would you recommend -the Dramwer 1974 or Api 5500. I decided to do the cutting ITB and boosting outboard . I will also add portico 2 MBP to the chain later and 1951 EQ . Thanks !
You're asking the guy who has both.. it's gonna be a trade no matter which one you pick. Drawmer is always right, it's more flexible, especially in the low end but everywhere really with the variable Q, API is faster, meaning more punch, but also more colored but you don't always want that color. Better highs the API (with scott lieber op amps) and more focused punchy low end which for EDM is amazing, but the Drawmer is not slow at all, just the API is the punchiest of all eq's out there. Drawmer can be more surgical too, and you say you do cutting ITB, wait until you do it with hw then tell me. Anyways, gun to the head and having to pick only one, I'd go with Dramwer for 2bus or mastering, but you if you hear the API, you will want that one soon too, definitely before the other one you're planning on getting
@@mixbustv Thank you very much, i really appriciate your time! I think i will choose 1974 because i already have the API color in Silver Bullet , you are very helpful here !
debating on this Drawmer 1974 (4band) eq $1149, vs API SR24 (4band) eq $1230, vs Warm Audio WA-273 (3band) eq but has dual pre amp $1599. I have a Focusrite Clarett + 8 pre, pre amps sound good. If the WA 273 eq preamp is tons better, I will deal with the 3 band eq. If not, I'd rather have the extra mid band eq for more control. especially since I will be using on MIXBUS. I guess it boils down to the Drawmer 1974 and the API SR24 then. any ideas?
Hi again, I commented 3 months ago. I ended up buying the unit, it worked really nice for about 2 months. I then started hearing a humming whenever I activated it or took it off bypass (The humming is independent of any knob settings) I checked all my cables swapped them out, plugged it into different inputs on my interface, still hum. My Sales guy at SweetWater sent out a replacement, I tried out the replacement still hum on the new unit. Finally tech said it could be electrical interference in my home or whatever, but I never changed anything in my setup (or my home) first two months and it worked great. I'm running a new Focusrite Clarett 8 pre interface. any ideas?
thanks for the fast reply. I disconnected all my hardware except for mac, focusrite and eq, still humming. i dont think its electrical interference. only time it stops is when i bypass or when i remove eq output cable . damn
Hi David would you say your unit is noisy at all? Mine adds a bit more hiss than you'd expect when engaging.. wondering if I should have it checked out. What a unit though!
How would you use that on a stereo bus if you're doing two different things on each Channel like let's say more based on one side than the other would you buy 2 and Link them together? Hi David. Late to this thread he he. Great review, considering getting the 1974 to be parked as 1st on my mastering chain. Some guy commented that it has really high ground noise levels but u know, all it takes is this guy having bad cables. Do u experience high noise with yours? Peace brother.
picked up the 1978 partially based on your review....thanks for that (I dig it). wondering where this lives in your mixes? individual tracks or 2mix? thanks!
@@mixbustv Thanks, I was wondering about both in fact, but meant the 74 (sorry I was being confusing). Excellent to hear that the 74 lives on 2bus as that's what I was thinking of using it for. It's great that you're getting so much mileage out of them. I feel like Drawmer doesn't get enough cred...their stuff is always at least very good.
Yes I'm still using it and loving it. I don't use it on the 2bus, but that's just because I have, as you probably know, a ton of other eqs, and they're a LOT more expensive. Point is, this is a killer eq and you have to spend a lot more to get better
do you still have this unit? I'm considering buying it to use as a master eq and to push my Dangerous Convert AD+. Would you recommend it for that application?
yes I still have this unit and no I do not recommend that to push the ad. You need to look at headroom, pushing a converter like the ad+ is not easy because it has incredibly high headroom and almost any unit out there will crap out before you can ever clip that. I said this before, you cannot cheap out.
@@mixbustv yes, I’m looking for a unit with good headroom and saw that the Drawmer 1974 has maximum output of +26db. That’s not enough? thanks for helping out
@@mixbustv I use the Drawmer gear mostly for mastering and wished there was a 12/6-dB range switch so I could have 0,5dB steps. Otherwise this eq does everything I need at a cost I probably can afford. I have considered the TK Audio TK-lizer 2 which seems to be more targeted for mastering. However it is slightly more expensive and has a constant q of 0,5. Sometimes I need to adjust frequencies within a narrow band. Also, I like the Drawmer equipment in general and they have great customer support. So far I have bought the 1973, 1978 and 1968. Would you recommend the 1974 for mastering and would you use an eq with 1dB steps when you do mastering yourself?
@@mixbustv Thank you for your helpful answer! 1500USD per unit is the absolute maximum of what I will ever spend on outboard gear for mixing/mastering. I will loose my hearing because of aging long before I can afford to upgrade my whole system to justify an eq like the massive passive etc. To my (and my customers) ears, the transparency of the Drawmer gear is good enough. However I hear that the 1968 is softening the bass a little and that the 1978 compresses a bit aggressively so they are not ideal in all cases. However, the 1973 has worked perfect in all my projects. As long as the transparency and noise level is at least on par with the other equipment in these series I think the 1974 is one of the best options within my budget.
Lol I was going to ask David if it was still worth it on the next Q and A live. But I found one on Guitar center for 699 and grabbed it immediately. Should be here wednesday. Wtf
@@thedrunkenfish5855 when it showed up and the volume as well as the frequency knobs were detented I cringed. When I tested it and learned the detent weren't at 0db I returned it immediately. What i mean is that turning on the unit had a -.5db reduction when the gain knob was at 0. I returned it and grabbed up a JDK R24.
Actually plugins have their upsides, recall for example. And sometimes cheaper analog gear sounds worse than a good plugin. But to me analog gear feels more real somehow...
Hello David, thank you for such high quality videos on your channel! Thinking about this one as my first analog EQ. May be you could help me to answer some nerd questions: 1. Are Low and High bands shelf or bell? (Should be shelf, but i couldn't find it clearly in the manual) 2. Though the slope control is placed in Low section, accordingly to the manual it changes only the slope of Low Cut filter (the same for High and High Cut). Is it true or does it affect both bands at the same time? (the manual wasn't clear for me again) 3. Just curious: why High Cut can operate here up to 32 kHz? Is it kind of anti-aliasing filter before ADC for those, who works at higher sample rates? Looks a bit unusual for an analog EQ. Thanks in advance!
@@mixbustv Thanks for reply! Yes, my first thought was exactly as you describe and the panel design shows it also. I was confused only after reading the operating manual, it says something different there, like for HighCut filter: "FREQUENCY: 4kHz - 32kHz This continually variable control attenuates the signal above the frequency set. The rate at which the attenuation occurs is set by the ‘Slope’ control set in the High band (see 6)." The Low and High bands have a Bell-Icon next to the description and no word about EQ-Type or if they are affected by Slope control. The Slope description looks like a Low and High Cut filter description and doesn't really fit to a shelf-eq. So actually the manual says: Low and High bands are Bell and Slope affects only Low und High Cut filters. Maybe I'm too nerdy, but it's somehow weird. :) Anyway, I think it's a great EQ and going to try it.
That crazy because I thought the same -after wanting one for months and listening again before almost buying today. I like my 1978 but this one not so much .

Hey, who can help pls: I bought the Dawner 1974 but how can i connect it with Cubase 11 i use the Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 as Audio Interface

@@mixbustv thx. O supscripted to ur channel. Do u also work with cubase? A how to with Cubase would be awsome. :) Do i need the same proces? 2:2?
Hi David. Late to this thread he he. Great review, considering getting the 1974 to be parked as 1st on my mastering chain. Some guy commented that it has really high ground noise levels but u know, all it takes is this guy having bad cables. Do u experience high noise with yours? Peace brother.
No noise problems at all
What is the input gain for?
picked up the 1978 partially based on your review....thanks for that (I dig it). wondering where this lives in your mixes? individual tracks or 2mix? thanks!
78 or 74? 74 is on my 2bus along with many other things, 78 on groups or single tracks
Thought this would be out by now. Still waiting. What is the street price?
who is the singer dude at the end, loving the drawmer
Hi David. I'm thinking about getting this for the mixbus and for vocals.. Are you still using this eq?
Yes I'm still using it and loving it. I don't use it on the 2bus, but that's just because I have, as you probably know, a ton of other eqs, and they're a LOT more expensive. Point is, this is a killer eq and you have to spend a lot more to get better
Can this also be used on mono sources?
Looks great. What's the price point going to be at?
@@mixbustv Wow, that's crazy.
I do not love this one. Low end is not bad tho. If you like this one, be sure to check the 1961. Much better mid EQ sound imho.
do you still have this unit? I'm considering buying it to use as a master eq and to push my Dangerous Convert AD+. Would you recommend it for that application?
yes I still have this unit and no I do not recommend that to push the ad. You need to look at headroom, pushing a converter like the ad+ is not easy because it has incredibly high headroom and almost any unit out there will crap out before you can ever clip that. I said this before, you cannot cheap out.
@@mixbustv yes, I’m looking for a unit with good headroom and saw that the Drawmer 1974 has maximum output of +26db. That’s not enough? thanks for helping out
@@mixbustv (also considering SSL Six)
probably another knock-of of Rane PE15 which was mono only
🤦
Bad box! I need it.
where is your custom eq now David?...i wonder
What is the cut/boost steps in dB on this eq?
Price for the 1974?
Im Sold!
wanna have fun with frequency wildness? beat the "niio lotine core"
You didn't keep the hyperion?
@@mixbustv Bereich Eq?:)
still using it ??? thinking about getting for my studio but trying to justify it lol
every mix
Lol I was going to ask David if it was still worth it on the next Q and A live. But I found one on Guitar center for 699 and grabbed it immediately. Should be here wednesday. Wtf
Big Mac Miller Lite how’d it work out for u ?!?
@@thedrunkenfish5855 when it showed up and the volume as well as the frequency knobs were detented I cringed. When I tested it and learned the detent weren't at 0db I returned it immediately.
What i mean is that turning on the unit had a -.5db reduction when the gain knob was at 0.
I returned it and grabbed up a JDK R24.
Big Mac Miller Lite I’m trying do decide on pulling the trigger on this,Elysia xfilter or the R24. I love the tone the r24 has.
analog is serious business. plugins have no life and they are boring
Actually plugins have their upsides, recall for example. And sometimes cheaper analog gear sounds worse than a good plugin. But to me analog gear feels more real somehow...
Word.
VS Xfilter? Hesitating
Don't. Elysia makes great stuff, that unit is an unfortunate design and it has no headroom. (I had it, and I also talked to them)
Seems to sound better bypassed. Try the Neve 8803.
That crazy because I thought the same -after wanting one for months and listening again before almost buying today. I like my 1978 but this one not so much .
