Comparing the "pultec trick" with only boosting low-end in A/B manner was very good. I finally understood the "pultec trick", which is mainly altering the Q value.
Great information and, prescient for home recording since everyone and their pet has access to Pultec emulations. This particular one is very faithful to the hardware. Thanks for posting these helpful tutorials with “key point” boxes; it’s why Audio Masterclass is a winner.
Wow! I thought my hearing was bad but after paying very close attention I could hear the differences when you select the IN. I'm only at the 4:49 timeline marker of your video and look forward to hearing the rest.
Great choice of subject and nice clear methodical coverage of it, as well as great choice of the Ruletec. I think it would be educational to describe in detail what you hearing, liking, and disliking about the different settings, especially when you're finding that sweet spot that you prefer. Might have also been worthwhile to mention the upper frequencies in that original bass track as it was quite buzzy at times, even if to say that what might appear to be a problem when soloed, might not be a problem in the mix. Also, comparing your treatment of the bass soloed to how it would work in the mix would obviously be relevant under most circumstances.
Thank you for your comment. Regarding the sweet spot, I prefer not to consider that my preference is better than anyone else's so when I settle on a setting it's because I think it has the best balance between too little effect and too much. Others may differ. You're correct that this recording of bass is rather buzzy. This can be a problem depending on context, but my feeling here is that since the player (not me!) is very competent then they probably like this kind of sound. DM
Comparing levels can be done by ear, by ear with a visual aid such as a VU meter, LUFS, or peak. Each has its pros and cons depending on what you want to find out. For finishing touches in mixing however, it's always the ear that's most important. DM
I have several versions of plugins that sound good but different from each other and different from the pultec hardware. Close enough though. The phase rotation in the low end I believe is way more important that the actual boost/cut. The best emulation in my arsenal are the waves Puigtech and the Softube Tubetech. The Puigtech also add a nice saturation.
Nice video! Would be nice to see you do this on other instruments as well like snare, piano, acoustic guitar, etc. Also would be nice if you also do a tutorial on the other settings or controls on the EQ as well. I hope that is not asking to much : ) Thank you very much. It's good learning from a Master. You could not have made it more plainer. You're the best!!!
Very nice instructional videos on pultec EQs. Take note for those of us on a budget that you can get a pretty good free version in the analog obsession RARE plugin. It has been updated recently and is very good. It even has internal 4x oversampling (like many of the better paid plugins). I think it's released under the bedroom producers blog banner too.
Great explanation. I use the Pultec on my UA arrow and the UA manual doesn't help at all in understanding how the controls work; I've been driving drunk for a few weeks. Thank you. I have subscribed,
It isn't that any one plug-in can magically transform your mixes. A full understanding of the techniques of audio is much more important, which is the purpose of our Music Production and Sound Engineering Course www.audiomasterclass.com/music-production-and-sound-engineering-course
I absolutely love the low end response of ruletec-eq but I'm a bit skeptical about its high end response , i think it kind of alters the phase (a bit) . . . There's a comparison video of ruletec-eq with hardware pultek . . . . . . Bdw, thank you for another amazing video . . . Thank u Sir . . 🙏🙏
This was recorded by an Audio Masterclass student. It's the same original clip all the way through. We don't know the setup but one of the interesting features is the fret noise. Normally this is an irritation but in this case it really adds to the character of the sound.
@@AudioMasterclass do you think maybe the fret noise is giving the listener kind of a distorted sound? Like how L'via L'viaquez bass or bulls on parade
The manual will help. The Pultec is simple but it isn't entirely intuitive. If Warm's manual doesn't help, then another plug-in developer with a Pultec emulation may have a better one. DM
@ th-cam.com/video/x93Vgkn9j6k/w-d-xo.html ...HAHA!! I have a couple of cobbled-together DIY amplified woofers woofers and you were dead-right: Enter, the 'rattle'! lol This is so much fun (...preparing to binge on your content)
Thank you for your message. Quoting the manual, the analog switch, "Enables Extra Analog Behaviour (Total Harmonic Distortion and Special Hum)". While this is a useful option in many analog emulations, we prefer to leave it switched out unless specifically demonstrating that function.
If you're listening through laptop speakers then you won't hear much. Studio monitors or studio grade headphones are recommended. If you still can't hear any differences, then perhaps you should find someone who can hear the differences and can point them out to you while you listen. Medically, it would be an audiologist whom you should consult.
@@Niemsn We sometimes get "I can't hear it" comments and it turns out the person has been listening on their phone, no headphones or even earbuds. But Genelecs... You can do this for all classic hardware and I'll watch everything, extremely good vídeo, the best I've come across on this matter.
Thank you for your comment. This is a simple but very effective EQ. We'll have more videos soon.
Really linked this very much... I am a bass play always trying to find the most optimum sound with my special energy...much appreciated!

Excellent video. I've recently bought the Rule Tec heritage pro strip - it's well worth it. Have you managed to compare the Rule Tec vs UAD pultec?
Haha. Great bassline from the headhunter album. Love it. I like your plugin videos by the way. Cheers.
For comparison, do you match the levels by ear or another method! Great Video!

I actually really like that second bass tone with just a bit of attenuation. What was used to record that? Sounds like some sort of fuzz?

Hi back.
Hi
Why use EQ anyway. (EQ fixes nothing according to the honest Audiophile) so why use it?
Hi. H-I.

Why doesn't it go to 11?
Sorry... I couldn't resist!
you didn't engage the analog switch.

That bass has a terrible buzz!
I don't disagree. Oddly enough some people like it like that. DM
I really don't hear the difference. What should I do? Go see a doctor?
