Completely new to this. This gave me a real good understanding of Maven. I am working on an existing project and trying to build it. I understand and see the pom.xml file. I do not understand where settings.xml is used. As the name suggests I would image this is a file that is used for configuration, but where would this live or go in a maven built project?

Maven is a build automation tool used primarily for Java projects. Maven addresses two aspects of building software: first, it describes how software is built, and second, it describes its dependencies. Though Maven started in Alexandria the testbed for its use was the Turbine project. The turbine was in the process of decoupling its persistence layer, services layer, and web layer into separate builds and I got very tired of having to maintain several different builds which were essentially the same.
