I live quite close to the museum, and before it was a museum, it was just the tanks and buildings laying around. We used to hide in the buildings to smoke, and I had my first kiss on the Sherman. They would get heated up by the sun in summer, so we'd hang out on them to keep warm during the night.
It's so weird seeing one of my favorite youtubers walking around there

You had your first kiss on a Sherman tank? That's funny, I had my first handjob by a guy called Sherman. But, I don't think he had anything to do with tanks or Croatia...😉🙃😂

Very proud that my dad designed and painted that nose art on the first MIGs-21s. I still remember rolls of stencils he was piecing together outside our garage. He was, and still is in touch with the pilots who defected from the JNA and brought first fighter planes to Croatia. Those defections were epic and a huge morale boost durint he war. At least one book was written about those events.

      It is complicated, but short:
Croatia declared independence which the rest of Yugoslavia
      quickly recognized.
However, Serb majority areas wanted to separate from Croatia,
and got support from Belgrade, mostly arms and a few volunteers.
      So the war was about:
      - The independence of the "Republika Srpska Krajina"
      - The territorial integrity of "AVNOJ borders" of Croatia
      Hope that helped!

I must comment on this because I live like 20 minutes from this museum. This is very small town called Karlovac and 4 rivers runs through this city, because of that it is called city on four rivers by Croatian people. It is like 50 km distance from our capitol town Zagreb. When you enter the museum, at the entrance there is a monument erected in honor of the first fallen defender who defended Karlovac in the war; he was the brother of my friend, godfather, and neighbor whom I saw two days ago. This place is called Turanj. Anyone who can and is willing should visit Croatia, especially the Adriatic coast and Dalmatia. It was very nice to see my city on your channel. Respect and I wish everyone a pleasant day.

As a Croat myself, "It's complicated" is the easiest explanation. Basicly we scrapped together what we could from the armories in Croatia that JNA had stored equipment in. A very large amount of guns, bullets and explosives were home made, especialy in Vukovar. Forein aid was less then minimal but politicly in the end they helped reintegrate the Danube area (Podunavlje) and the city of Vukovar wich got the nickname "modern Stalingrad".
My father was one of the men that operated a T55 in Operation Storm in the liberation of Banovina (70 - 80 km south of Zagreb). Luckily he survived and later most of the tankers admitted the T55 was the tank that freed us, even though they had more modern T72 and T80 in more limited numbers. Proud Croat✌

I'm not sure you want to go inside any of the closed crew compartment vehicles that were kept outside for a long time. Considering my experiences from similar parks(Pintér Művek Military Park,Kecel,Hungary strongly comes to my mind or the sport field in the Tapolca garrison, north of Lake Balaton) and installations... wasps always find a way and love to nest inside them.

    1. I really enjoy the museum tours! You should make one for every museum you visit as many of them are in corners of the world I'll never make it to.
    2. I'd also have enjoyed seeing the inside of the museum on the tour - lots of the most interesting things aren't the big tanks and planes (cool as they may be), but the small stuff in the cases with the stories they have to tell.

There are a few of these kinds of memorials around Croatia. Two more like this one come to mind:
The memorial center in Vukovar, which has a massive collection of tanks, howitzers, etc. and a decent collection of small arms. I don't know if you can actually get a veteran to tell you some stories from the war, sometimes there are younger guys on duty who are just shilling for the army. When I visited I could talk to a colonel who actually fought in the Vukovar battle, very down to earth and huble, very much unlike the younger guys.
Another one is the Memorial center of the 153rd Brigade near the barracks in Velika Buna, small place but they have some interesting stuff on display and the guys there are very friendly, on saturdays you should be able to catch the one of the commanders of the brigade there.

On top of all of that you can enter the vehicles if they are open (about a half of them are) and you can elevate guns on some artillery pieces.

I'm from the town of Karlovac and saw all the horrors of war.
As a County Counselman was there when it was opened.
I heard some information about the main building, which was used for tanks/horses in the old days.
Even though it was in pretty bad shape after the Homeland War, under the Yugoslav army's plaster and color, there were still visable layers of old plaster, color and letters in Gothic script; in German language, of course.

That’s a quite amazing collection of weapons, plus an amazing looking museum, of course the cost of that collection in blood, pain and lives is exceptional - but I suppose that in some ways makes the fact they’ve found the funding to demonstrate pride in their independence as a sovereign people all the more powerful.
    I won’t lie. I teared up a little :-)

Seeing the Flak 38 is a good reminder that while technology improves, it was still a 20x138 cannon round more than capable of carrying 20ish grams of high explosive filler 2000+ metres into the sky!

Nice to see this video. I recognised the building. One of my brothers went there with his family and got me a small booklet from the shop. Our maternal grandfather came from Igrane on the Dalmatian coast. One of our cousins fought against the Serbs and another cousin was working as a doctor in a maternity hospital when the Serbs came through. I understand that she was not very happy with their conduct.

There is also a big Memorial center in Vukovar that has many vehicles like these on display outside and guns and other homemade stuff indoors. Definitely worth a visit, even though it's a 3 hour drive from Zagreb. But as I said, it was definitely worth it :)

As you and Karl said about the Garand and M1911, obsolescent, not obsolete. In the right conditions, when the enemy doesn't have Armor or modern anti-Armor, a Sherman is still devastating.

    • @KirillTheBeast
      @KirillTheBeast 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

As long as those sets of "right" conditions exist, one can't honestly call the hardware "obsolete". The nature of most modern day armed conflicts is extremely assymetric, so antiquated equipment can prove itself to be effective.

The largest of those three homemade armoured vehicles, mounted on a sixwheeler, were produced in a shipyard not far from the building I live in. From this perspective it is what it is, but back then in 1991 it was an extasy on the streets when they were paraded through the streets going to the front lines. Greetings from Croatia!

The Sherman tank at the museum could have not been used at El Alamein since it’s an M4A3 which was made later than the battle of El Alamein. The British only used M4A1, M4A2, and M4A4. Furthermore this M4A3 was modified under the MAP (military assistance program) with a 76mm gun and other improvements and likely came from US stocks rather than tanks used by the Allies.
As you said the US supplied military aid during Tito’s era.

I can also absolutely recommend visiting the Slovien Army Museum in Pivka, they even have a submarine there! having been 8 when the Slovenes got rid of the JNA and the Croatian War started, and having grown up like 20km from the border in Austria this feels very backflashy for me. during the start of the Slovenian War of Independence I remember Austrian Jagdpanzer K going full throttle on the Highway towards the Border in order to kinda keep business on the Slovenian side. lucky for Southern Styria and Southern Carinthia that worked out with a bit of luck, but I am sorry for all those lifes lost on all sides. but on the other hand we had a rather big influx of Croatian/Bosnian/Serbian refugees that luckily for us (at least in my view in that particular case) kinda got Vienna, Graz and Austria in general out of that boring grey in grey post-cold war gloom and transformed us in something we almost had forgotten since 1918 with all good and bad things attached to it.

    369th Croatian Reinforced Infantry Regiment
    Military unit
The 369th Reinforced Infantry Regiment was a regiment of the German Army raised to fight on the Eastern Front during World War II. The regiment was formed in July 1941 by Croatian volunteers from the Independent State of Croatia, including a Bosnian Muslim battalion. It was commonly referred to as the Croatian Legion.

I went there with my school, it was sad and interesting at the same time.
My dad was in the Yugoslav army before the war started, We are Croats, and unfortunately when the war did start he fought somewhere in Zadar. He's been wounded in the shoulder by the shrapnel of a rocket, he did survive and he's been captured by the Serbs. He was let go but he would get beaten a lot, especially his friends. We went to Zadar too to light a candle for all his fellow fallen comrades and soldiers, many of them were mostly 18. We light a candle, went to a cafe bar nearby and it was sad listening to him telling me all that happened. The museum, I took a lot of pictures when I was there with my school and it's just sad that those weapons really were used in the war.
