    I think the blue gills are probably protecting nests. So they see one of their own getting too close and they attack it. Just a guess. I know I see lots of fish hollows along shore this time of year. Perhaps that is what is going on. Either that, or they are cannibals. LOL

    • @daviddonaghy7568
      @daviddonaghy7568 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bob Hamilton I go down to a local creek and throw a bare number 14 hook into their nests. They pick it up to get it out of their nest and usually you can hook them. As soon as you pull the nest builder out of the water, another male moves into the nest. When you throw the original nest builder back in the water it goes back to it's nest and a fight ensues.

    My grandfather used to say that you wanted the baits to resemble something in distress, in my experience it has been entirely true. Used to surf cast for salmon, you could cast a buzz bomb all day with a perfect retrieve, you might even get hits but as soon as you got distracted/out of synch and started retrieving more chaotically you could almost guarantee more hits.

    One little tip, if a billed hardbait doesn't run straight, it means the metal eye you put your line through is a bit offset. You can just take a pair of pliers and gently 'finetune' the metal eye. Just a miniscule little tweeze to the left/right depending which way the swimbait goes sideways. Try it out, some hardbaits need a little finetuning

    Bluegill are super aggressive right now, bc of the spawn. When they back off, you'll catch more bass. As for the baits running sideways, I've caught fish that way too. Usually when testing a new bait. It'll roll on its side and I pause to let it right itself. Then a bass nails it.

    To make your lure track strait, bend the wire loop the split ring and line is attached too. Bend it left or right like a rudder. Tight lines!
    Edit, more tips:
    If the ring cannot be bent, shave the lip on one side with a file. Shave a little at a time.
    A single hook on the tail, rather than a treble will sometimes act like a tail on a kite, especially when doing high speed retrievals or trolling. Adding a bucktail or tubing has the same effect.
    Make sure the hooks are straight and true. A bent hook will affect the action.
    Try different hooks, heavier hooks sometimes help stabilize the action, but be careful it can also hinder the lures action too.
    Superglue small lead shot on the belly can help also. Weight towards head will make it dive deeper, weighing the tail end will make the lure swim shallower.
    On soft lures, sometimes factory defects or toothy fish can unbalance the lure. Eg. If it runs untrue after a fish took a chunk out of one side, take a chunk off the other side to keep it symmetrical. Sounds silly until it happens with a super hot lure, and it keeps you fishing.

    Bro. You’re cool I like your other video that you had a big fishing lure...... I believe that pond is stocked with large bass and other type of fish. • @DustyTheDog

    Have you tried "tuning" your swimbaits to make them swim more straight? I noticed that on a Matzuo lure package that there was a guide on how to tune it using the eyelet you tie to. Slightly bending the eyelet, as instructed, helped me with a few of the bait I have found lying around.

    • @TheTrequarista
      @TheTrequarista 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I'm a wooden lure maker and "tune" the screw eyes is something often needed on a lure with a lip, for crankbaits for exemple if symetry is not perfect. Anyway nice video Nick, as always, keep going! Greets from France

    Hey Nick. How exactly do you tie on your small lures?
    I figured out, that a lot of tiny lures wont work properly/won't swim upright if u tie a fixed knot.
    Using a "rapala knot" worked wonders for me in those cases, because the lure has a lot of freedom to move the way its supposed to due to the loose loop.
    In many cases removing the metal "key-ring" thingy helps action aswell.
    Love your vids. Greetings from Germany.

    That bait just needs to be tuned. Many crankbaits need to be tuned from the factory. Just take a needle nosed pliers and slightly bend the eyelet where it comes out of the nose of the crankbait. You will notice it swim worse or better, and you'll be able to tune it to perfection using that method.
