I know johhny sattler, he is a barman at my sons junior football club and he is the kindest most down to earth men you would ever meet. A true gentleman
Likewise, i played for gold coast with Scott at Bay one year, I remember John coming into the dressing sheds giving a pep talk, awestruck was an understatement, years later as an adult, he would remember me when I came in for a beer, including when he did some time working at Tigers, always had time for a quick chat and he would always slide a free beer my way, when i first met him, i was a tiny little fella, he was huge to me then, as i grew to 6ft, i could never believe that that he wasnt actually that tall, amazed how tough he must of been, friendliest man on the planet, RIP condolences to Scott, his sister and family
Has anyone even talked about John Bucknell in the last 50 years? Satts will be remembered forever in the halls of Rugby League. A true hero, RIP Satts.
I WAS THERE THAT DAY,SLEPT AT GROUND,SOUTHS TO MY BOOT HEELS. Incidentally I chatted with John Bucknall the previous week,he was a carpenter.Johnny Satts later owned a pub at Southport. It would have to go down as the most cowardly act ever on a Rugby field. It was planned by the manly team, they had been thrashed all season by souths, no hope of beating them and they were after Coote as well, but souths kept the ball away from Ron early .Keith Page had a nice bonus for looking the other way much to Rex Mossops woe. They had to try something as they were second rate compared to Souths who beat them in the semi after being down 19 nil.til Eric Simms started potting field goals.with only Fulton to hold them up.He was a great player and didn't have any any part of it,he wanted it to not go on.But was over-ruled. Fulton was all class, not only a player, but coach and a good guy .He and Sattler were friends
+Reginald Woodbridge "It was planned by the manly team, they had been thrashed all season by souths" Not true...Manly won the first round game 10 - 6. "they were second rate compared to Souths who beat them in the semi after being down 19 nil." That's not true either...the final score in the semi-final was 22-15 to Souths. So where did this 19 point head start come from? And we won't go into all the fearful thrashings Manly handed out to Souths in 1971 and the subsequent seasons, shall we? :-)
@@Nuttybott Well, after the 1971 season, Souths dream team was dismantled by Manly and others, thanks to the almighty dollar! 💰💰💰💰💰💰 What do you expect?
I was there! That hit on Sattler, it was an assault pure and simple. It was so blatant, as you can see. That guy Bucknall should have been outed of the game, for life.
may i suggest to all of you who condemn John Bucknell take a look at the 1968 grand final and check out the dog shot Ron Coote puts on Bill Bradstreet a few minutes into the game. could have easily resulted in the same injury as Sattlers broken jaw.
@pa59 Even if it was similar, I still don't get Glenn's point. He's essentially saying "Yeah but your guy!!!~~!!" I fail to see how anything Ron Coote did, makes condemning Bucknell any less valid. You've even got a Manly fan agreeing that it was a dog act just above and that's a player from his own team!
Even as a Manly fan I'll say that Bucknall got what he deserved that day. It was a thug act. He did go on to win the 1973 premiership with Manly. He played in our Reserve Grade GF win earlier in the day and thinking he wouldn't be called upon in the main game against Cronulla, actually had a full lunch and a can of coke between games. Then Ron Turner took out Mal Reilly and 25 minutes into the game Bucknall came on to replace him.
Sattler claimed Bucknell dogged it by not playing in Manly's games against Souths the following year. I can remember seeing John Sattler in Elizabeth Street once. Compared to modern props he was a midget! Would not have been 90 kilos.

True man will always be

Bucknall didn't come out for the second half or face Souths in the following season. He has gone down as the most gutless player in RL history.
I was told he played next season rematch & was smashed by South’s pack & never played again
Rest In Paradise Legend ❤
They certainly don't make them like John Sattler any more!
RIP SATTS you are Immortal FOREVER!

@M & still no where as entertaining as the greatest game of all Rugby League
Hard as nails but a real gentleman off the field Sattler. What a get square McCarthy got on Bucknell fair and legal but a bone rattler all the same

He'd be banned from the game these days.
OG team

He ended up playing for Manly, and won two Premierships with them.
absolute dog shot should have been banned from the game.
@M Football is the McDonalds of sport - popular but no good for you.

Yes but they were men of old tough and willing to go the distance
They all worked for a living, n played football on the weekend s.a vastly different time. They had a lot more character than some of the posers today
