The Darter Bird, also known as snakebirds or anhingas, are a family of water birds belonging to the family Anhingidae.
They are often mistaken for cormorants due to their similar appearance, but they can be distinguished by their thinner necks and longer tails. Adults typically measure between 85 to 90 centimeters in length and weigh between 1.2 to 2.3 kilograms. With a lifespan ranging from 10 to 15 years, these birds are well-adapted to their aquatic environment.
These birds are expert divers and primarily feed on fish, spearing them with their sharp bills while swimming underwater. They may also consume other aquatic prey such as amphibians, crustaceans, and insects. They are skilled divers and are often seen swimming with only their slender necks above the water.
They are primarily found in warm regions across the world. The American Darter, Anhinga anhinga inhabits the warmer regions of the Americas, including the southeastern United States, Central America, and South America. The African Darter, Anhinga rufa is distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. The Oriental Darter, Anhinga melanogaster is found in South and Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. The Australasian Darter, Anhinga novaehollandiae occurs in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
