Where was this gem from Rais Khan hidden for such a long time.
I just saw that this was recorded by Haider Bhai.
Really professional recording --- adds a totally new dimension to an already brilliant recital.

He is different, special, very melodious... that's for sure.

Frankly we are splitting "musical" hairs! --and to what purpose?
I saw VK at very close quarters . I had met Rais a couple of times.
Both were brilliant
Difference lay in the following:
VK was sheer genius/ RK was simply brilliant
VK was a cultured man who chose his words carefully. RK always had a chip on his shoulder and was arrogant ( ask anyone who has interacted with him )
Admittedly RK's father took VK under his wings and taught him. True VK does not dwell too much on that period; perhaps he has compelling reasons. I know of at least one excellent vocalist today who was assigned a Guru who refused to teach him
-- and that boy went on to become one of the best vocalists of today
But in the final analysis, RK is RK--- at best guru bhais or whatever. Don't take anything on internet as gospel truth. And why didn't VK respond? I think VK did not want to give such a claim any "bhav" or the slightest hint of dignity by reacting to it.
The music world was laughing it's guts out at the preposterous claim made by RK in that video

Oh, and "Mr. Bahar: this is a ragmala of PILU not Bhairavi.
Wrong - 100% wrong. He plays Bhairavi at the end as a separate piece at around 1 hour and 20 mins. Before that it’s not Pilu
Volume is very very very low. To much difficult to hear properly. Really frustrating. Also videography is not upto the mark.

Don't get carried away by statements made by artists, most of whom may be absolutely brilliant in their professions but are plagued by personal and petty jealousies
Mohammed khan sahab father of rais khan also taught sitar to ustad vilayat khan sahab and ustad enayat khan sahab had also taught sitar to ustad rais khan sahab so it is has no meaning at all who was who`s shaagird both are from same linage of ancestors dosen`t really matters at all

You missed including Pt. Ravi Shankar and Pt. Nikhil Banerjee in your list of his students. LOL
I saw a recording of Ustad Rais Khan himself saying that Vilayat Khan was his student and the student of his father. Now, why would an artist of such a high calibre ever lie about such an important matter? Even Vilayat Khan did not dispute his claim. Perhaps, VK knew that he could not refute it given there must have been some truth to it.
Rais Khan is a great Sitar player no question about that, I can safely conclude that you are inspired by his music and I am too. But I would not believe what he says is completely accurate, he is driven by his personal grievances. Vilayat Khan is 11 years older than Rais Khan and he started performing before Rais Khan was born, and debuted his first LP at 8.
Vilayat khan sahab was a student of mohmmed khan father of rais khan there is no doubts in this and vk is also maternal uncle of rais khan sahab
