It was even mentioned during the mansion arc that he wasnt sure if he got more than 3 tries per checkpoint which is why he was so terrified so start over again after Rem got aced by the puppers.
Not knowing where the save point is gonna be next and not knowing if there was a limit how many times he can do it, and the only way to know is to test it (which is to die) is treated as a last resort, it's reasonable that he has to treat every single loop as if it's last.
