I love it when she does epic curious with the level 1, 2 and 3 chefs. Most people are wondering how she is going to use booze in her dishes.
The cupcake scene was my favorite. I recently saw a tiktok where they recommended letting the cupcake collapse intentionally so it doesn't dome to make it easier to frost. Like just put less batter in the cupcake liner!
Idk why it just triggered the cook in me, but everyone was like "no you're wrong" and rude per TT standard. I just think if your going to do something, do it right.
Because she is a woman.

Bridesmaid review: "She is clearly depression baking." That had me roaring.
I love that Penny was honest and kind. She didn’t tear apart every little thing. She gave them the benefit of the doubt, recognizing that not everyone is trying to be a professional. Which made it much more pleasing to watch.
Except when it comes to GBBO. Those people are actual amateurs doing their best, not some actors pretending to bake.

This is the sort of stuff I say while watching The Great British Bake Off but I can't bake a cake
Also you can't use bake-off in the US as it's a US trademarked and legally you'll be in trouble for using it, hence why they had to change it for US to "baking show"
@@ErikTheVikingMechanic That doesn't seem correct. It's called The Great British Bake off, and that's what is copyrighted. It began in GB Then caught on worldwide. The BBC sold the show to Channel 4 and it's still GREAT !

The other thing with a food fight based purely off throwing flour, in a kitchen with a wood burning stove, is that wheat flour can explode with an ignition source...

me also. you learn a little more every time you watch stuff like this. What to do, what not to do. How to do it. even if you don't bake cakes.. i don't bake cakes, but you'll remember some of that info down the line.

Not to be pedantic but the show is (annoyingly) called 4 Levels. I LOVE Rose but it should be called 3 Levels and still have her review and educate at the end.

Finally, someone who admits fondant is NOT great. I will never have my wedding cake be wrapped in or come close to fondant. Eww!
I thought it was common for people to say it was gross. My sister picked out a gorgeous wedding cake and then told the baker, "I want this but with buttercream I don't care if it doesn't look as smooth"

What I like about her reviews is she doesnt just reviewing the baking skills but also what it does to the storytelling of the movie. I like it when she said that chocolate is a character in the movie.

Ok but are we gonna talk about "The Princess Switch" first film, where she made it 3 hours into a 5 hour cake competition and just then realized her stand mixer cord was cut...and then her only worry was "how will I puree the berries?!"...

I was irrationally angry about that part! You wouldn’t even use a stand mixer to purée berries unless you were also using some sort of attachment, which wasn’t present in the scene.
I think the time effery in GBBS is not just to build tension to make it seem like everything is coming together at the last second, but also because they really don't want us to see the completed item until it reaches the judges. If someone's managing their time well, the cake might look nearly complete during the last ten minutes, and they can't really use that footage, at least not in full shots.

On a more serious note, I do see the value of discipline, and I wish modern western society valued it more. Growing up as a person of color, I often made fun of white kids and how lax their parents always seemed to be.
I love watching The Great British Baking Show. Never ever take those 5 minutes left (or any minutes left) for any reality show. Blame (or credit) the director for the quick dramatic shots and the editor for putting the "icing" on the drama content with quick cuts.

yeah I love GBBO as well but clearly they often have more time than those "5 minutes" because if they were true to the time limits, then there'd be far more half finished baked goods and that's not what the viewers tuned in to see.

1: I love it when professional women who are good at their craft speak confidently and don't apologize for "showing off" their knowledge and skills. Amazing! 2: I wonder what she would have to say about The Hundred Foot Journey. It's a family favorite, and the food is its own character.
I love her! I expected her to know stuff about cooking and baking ofc but she knows her movies/series as well! Her gushing about Big Night and the commentary on Chocolat is just *chef’s kiss*
I really love how she pointed out how to fix or improve mistakes. I didn't find her judgemental at all lol
All the "ask a ex-con about movie and TV crime" segments is fun and all, but asking a proper baker about movie baking is great too. XD
I really liked the Chef, her food must be really delicious cuz we can see how much love she has for cooking

She's on the Epicurious channel a lot especially the show 4 Levels when the challenge is baking.
her chocolate chip recipe is intense, but oh so worth it

same here. there's "1 minute left" yet they're able to finish all of their piping, decorations and placing? yeah no.
of course it's TV and they want an appealing end product but there'd be no need to make it so 'dramatic'.

I chose this video because it was Penny. I've seen her on Epicurious as one of the 3 chefs making some dish. She is the pro of course.
I'm with Penny. I never like food fight scenes. Not just because of the mess but because of the wastefulness.

For Chef Favreau actually trained with Roy Choi, shadowed him, worked as part of Choi's crew and trained at a culinary school. Would be awful if it wasn't correct. 😆
Roy's main stipulation on agreeing to be an advisor for the movie was that everything be authentic. If you haven't see it yet you should watch The Chef Show on Netflix. I'm totally jealous of Jon Favreau now. He's practically a master chef now and the episode with Robert Rodrigeuz shows hes a pretty good artist too.

16:37 I like how everything is just silent for a second, while she judges the scene with the greatest amount of judgement possible.
For me, the most in-your-face editing GBBO moment was when they were making a technical challenge where they had to use a lot of food coloring and some bakers had their fingers stained really bad. The thing is those bakers had their fingers already stained in the signature challenge.. and that's chronologically not possible! Did they travel in time?
When I was in college I rented a guest house and I always had at least 4-5 friends staying there with me. We had a flour fight one time. It started with someone getting a handful of flour thrown in their face. Then it was on. We threw flour all around the whole house. All over the hardwood floors. We tried sweeping it up and it just spread it around. We tried mopping it up and it just turned to dough. I lived there for two years and was never able to get all the flour.
Oof.
10:10 - A lot of people think they're playing it safe on pie dough if the countertop and rolling pin are made of marble or granite, because there's this misconception that these materials are inherently "colder" than other materials. In reality, a marble countertop and rolling pin will be the same temperature as a wooden countertop and rolling pin in the same room. The reason stone _feels_ cold is because these materials hold more heat and conduct heat more quickly. Our skin is warmer than room temperature, so when we touch a stone surface, the stone surface is going to draw heat out of our hands. But if you're colder than room temperature (for example, if you're some butter that has just come out of the fridge, or you're some pie dough made with cold water), the stone surfaces is going to push heat _into_ the dough, warming it um more quickly than a stone surface would.
Of course, the rolling pin can be chilled in the fridge, but then you might get a lot of condensation forming on it when you pull it out, which could make things less rolly and more slidey.

In Bridesmaids, looks like she made enough for a whole dozen of cupcakes BUT she only filled one cupcake well.
No, she clearly made one, but the filmmakers, in the prep/ making shots, didn't want to film the miniscule quantities that, in real life, would be making one cupcake. In other words, it's actually really pretty difficult to measure out making one cupcake, unless you're going by weight and even then, as said in the video. In real life, it is far easier to just make a full dozen of cupcakes.

I always knew that the timing in the Great British Baking show was off. They edit it for entertainment and intensity. But the cakes and flavors are really what I’m there for anyways 😄😁😋

At 4:33 "And look at Marc Anthony... my god!". He was so young in that movie...and suited the role too as the innocent and naive cook in the kitchen.

I’m a nurse and an amateur baker (I sell cakes and stuff sometimes, but not in a bakery) so baking/cooking and medical shows drive me insane 🤣🤣

to be fair GBBO are amateur bakers so naturally they're bound to make mistakes so I think it'd be very unfair to the contestants.

I had 3 chefs in my family and grew up around a lot of other chefs. A chef we knew, snapped on night stormed into the dining room and abused a customer like this, all while carrying his chefs knife and threatening. He got into a LOT of trouble. When Chefs snap, they snap.

Yes! Thank you for saying all the things I am usually thinking as a pastry chef. The scene in Bridesmaids made me irrationally upset. There’s enough ingredients there for at least a half dozen. And she used a liquid measuring cup for flour!! 😳

I'm so glad you said that about the Bridesmaids solo cupcake... I always thought I wasn't a good enough baker because I couldn't do this (with reference just to this scene and film) but now I know it was unachievable all along!! 😅
